This may be of use to some of you with Christmas and New Year’s Eve around the corner

Whilst fireworks are pretty and fun for us, they are not always fun for our pets or wildlife. With the festive period fast approaching, make sure you are prepared. Here are some ways in which you can help your pets:

✨Start implementing calming methods now, such as plug-ins, collars and supplements.
✨Ensure your pet has a safe space that they can retreat to. This should be full of comfort and familiar smells. It can be as simple as putting a big blanket over your dogs crate or keeping that box that your cat enjoys more than the toys that you bought!
✨Keep curtains closed to block out the lights.
✨Have the TV or music on a little louder than you usually would. Make sure you don't choose a channel that has fireworks on!
✨Try a thunder shirt.
✨Only walk your dog during daylight.
✨Keep your cat indoors and lock the cat flap for the night.
✨Cover outside hutches and runs with thick blankets to block out the lights and some sounds.
✨Keep to your normal routine. Pets are very sensitive to change so any changes can cause more stress.
✨Try not to react yourself as our pets can pick up on when we are anxious.
✨Refrain from rewarding the pet's behaviour with treats etc. when they become anxious as this may cause them to worsen.
✨If you are having fireworks yourself, reach out to your neighbours and local community to warn them.
✨Ensure microchip details are up to date in case your pets get scared and run off.
✨Do not shut your pet in one room as this can exacerbate their anxiety.
✨Ensure fields and stables are secure for horses.
✨Distract your pets with toys and chews.
