Yesterday a pair of Ringed Plovers, successfully hatched 3 chicks on Mudeford Sandbank. This is the first confirmed breeding since 1984. The chicks are tiny and very vulnerable and within a busy public area. They are quite fast and could turn up anywhere but are likely to stay along the shoreline. We are working with the Beach Hut Owners' Association and Christchurch Harbour Ornithological Group to help protect them. To give them the best chance of success we are asking that: dogs are kept on a lead beyond the Black House, all visitors observe signs and remain vigilant whilst on site. It will take just over 3 weeks before they are able to fly. Please do not approach or attempt to touch the chicks.

Its advice about birdlife links to the Bird Aware Coastal Code: look out for birds 🦆 move further away if they become alert 🚶‍♂️ keep dogs alongside 🐕 and follow requests on signs 💙

So, as part of my house-sitting services, I am committed to responsible dog-walking, in line with the NF Professional Dog Walkers Charter, respecting both wildlife and other Forest users. I only do 1:1 dog-walking (or 2 dogs from same household) on a lovely long biothane lead, keeping to main tracks and encouraging dogs to sniff and use their brains rather than tear around in a pack. A little bit about me: My name is Helen and I'm an experienced female non-smoking house-sitter. I enjoy looking after dogs, horses, cats, chickens and keeping an eye on sheep, goats and cattle. Also happy to turn my hand to fish, rabbits etc and to look after garden/house-plants. In addition to having had my own dogs and horses over the years, I have successfully fostered many dogs awaiting rehoming. My greenfingers have been honed over many years of growing fruit, veg and wildflowers on an allotment.
