A dealers view:

1997:

Horse riders could ride horses.

You learnt to really ride and when you fell off you got back on. You didn't sue, you either learnt to ride the horse you bought or you paid to have the horse schooled more or you learnt that you were screwed over, cut the losses and made sure you didn't repeat the mistake next time.

If you paid cheap money you realised you were taking on a project, that there was a reason it was cheap.

If someone went to the effort of taking a horse to shows. To schooling that horse. To jumping it around a few registered 1.10m classes you paid easily Β£5,000 upwards for it.

2017:

Horse riders don't seem to be able to ride to the same standard.

Riding schools have had to stop allowing a lot of the foundation equine education in fear of being sued.

If you buy a horse you can't ride you straight away come onto Facebook and slate the dealer. Even if you have owned the horse for months.

Β£1500/2000 should buy you a nicely schooled and well produced horse capable of jumping 1m+ and NEVER have a playful moment.

A project should be for pretty much free, and even the project has to be "safe".

How has the horse world changed so much.

A dealer nowadays has to almost turn every horse into a brain dead machine for it to be able to be accepted into the everyday market.

The sleepless nights a good dealer has worrying that even though you have worked your ass off on the horse and done everything possible to make sure you can stand over that horse, the fear that the slightest issue will result in your business reputation being shredded haunts you.

The hours of blood sweat and tears and financial cost that goes into making these machines to have very little financial gain can be heart breaking.

I seriously believe it has become a very sad world and it needs to change again.

I personally won't get on a horse without one and I don’t mean a glas of wine πŸ·β€“ although with some horses I’m sure that would help! No what I’m talking about is a neck strap.

Evertime I sell a horse people would asked "oh why is the horse wearing a neck strap in this video or picture?" "What does it do?" 😱😱😱
Or when I ride someone elses horse and asked for a neckstrap. I get answers like" he doesn't need one he/she is safe"

I am happy to admit I am a neck strap rider. I even ride the safes horse with a neckstrap even my very own best horse Peanut see in pictures

Neck straps have long been associated with beginner riders. But neck strap is a really useful piece of equipment in so many situations. Most of my horses will stop by using a neck strap so on the occasions when those horses spook or go a little faster than I want the neck strap can be used rather than always relying on the rein contact. These days I will rarely get on a horse without a neck strap – it would just feel as if something was missing.

If you are riding a horse that’s a little fresh, keeping one fingerπŸ‘†πŸ» hooked around your neck strap can be helpful in making you feel a bit more secure. Of course it’s not necessarily going to stop you from falling off but if the horse shoots sideways and you have hold of a neck strap there is more chance you will stay with it. If you just had hold of the reins the chances are you could lose your balance and grab the reins, whereupon the horse shoots his head up and runs away from sudden rein pressure … so what could have been a simple step sideways turns into a drama.

Of course just because it’s there doesn’t mean to say you have to hang on to it all the time – but it’s just like an added piece of safety equipment. You can also just use the martingal strap.

Give it a go πŸ˜‰

I am trying my hardest to keep all the horses ticking over Peanut is hoping his retirement has come early as he hardly gets ridden, Drum and Marshmallow doing both really well and my little lazy stallion is coming out for the odd play. Let's hope I will get lots done next week 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞
