This little sweetie is Lola. She is a regular visitor to us at Corner Vets as she is currently experiencing some gastrointestinal issues that we are investigating.

We always need to remember that some dogs just need a little bit of extra time and a gentle approach when visiting our clinics and Lola uses her toy to help her feel more secure and allows her to interact with us and other dogs in a way that she feels comfortable

This beautiful girl is Precious, She came to see us because she was having some difficulty passing urine.
Our lovely Vet Aurobind collected a urine sample and, as you can see from the photo, discovered under the microscope that there were crystals in her urine
These crystals can block the urethra which is the tube leading from the bladder and can cause discomfort, blood in the urine and difficulty urinating
This can be caused by dehydration as many cats do not drink enough water, and can also be caused by ongoing infections, but many cats get this for unknown reasons
Precious was given some pain relief and a special diet which will help to dissolve these crystals and prevent them from recurring

Todays theme essential to responsible pet ownership is

🐾Plan for their care: Give them a lifetime of love🐾

❤️Thanks to better care, pets are
living longer now than they ever have before—and as pets get older, they need extra care and attention.

❤️ Cats are generally considered “senior” after 10 years of age. However, dogs don’t have a universal age of seniority because of their wider variety in size. Larger breed dogs tend to have shorter life spans than smaller breeds. For this and other reasons, experts suggest that dogs be considered “senior” when they reach the last 25 percent of the estimated life span for their breed.

❤️ While it's easy to spot the outward signs of aging such as graying haircoat and slower pace, it's important to remember a pet's body is also changing on the inside.

❤️Regular veterinary examinations can detect problems in older pets before they become advanced or life-threatening. They also can improve your pet's chances for a longer and healthier life. Learn what's "normal" and what may signal a reason for concern about an aging pet.

❤️ It's important to remember that age is not a disease. Although senior pets may develop age-related problems, you can help your pet live a happy, healthy, and active life in their senior years by providing for their physical, mental, and health care needs.

❤️ Excess weight can have a major effect on a senior pet’s health. Obesity in senior pets is linked to an increased risk of arthritis, difficulty breathing, insulin resistance or diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, skin problems, cancer, and other conditions.

❤️ On the other hand, sudden weight loss in a senior pet often means something is wrong, especially in cats. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland), cancer, diabetes, and kidney disease are common causes. If you notice any sudden changes in your pet’s weight, contact your vets

❤️ Changes in your pet's activity level can be a warning sign of underlying disease. A common cause of activity change is arthritis. You may notice that your pet is starting to avoid activities like running, jumping, climbing stairs, or getting into cars.
There may be other reasons for these changes, too. All are good reasons to have your vet examine your pet to find out what's going on.

❤️ Behavior changes in your pet can be the first signs of aging. These changes might be due to discomfort or pain (as with arthritis), worsening sight or hearing, certain diseases, or just the normal aging process. A type of brain impairment called “cognitive dysfunction,” which is similar to senility in people, also may be responsible.
Certain diets, medications, and opportunities to interact with their environment can help support brain function in senior pets. Your vet can recommend which ones might be right for your pet.

❤️Our VIP schemes support your pets throughout their lives, but can be particularly useful to help you save money with our more senior pets

Todays theme essential to responsible pet ownership is

🐾Emergencies happen: Be prepared
We never know when or where an emergency will happen. 🐾

❤️As a pet owner, you need to plan ahead.
Know what to do in case of an emergency, how to assemble emergency and first aid kits.

❤️Ensure your pet is microchipped in case they get separated from you in an emergency.

❤️Knowing some basic first aid information and being prepared for emergencies can help you avoid the feelings of panic that may accompany these situations.

❤️ If your pet is poisoned or exposed to toxins
Poisoning is a pet emergency that causes a great deal of confusion for pet owners. In general, any products that are harmful for people are also harmful for pets. Examples include cleaning products, rodent poisons, and antifreeze. But you also need to be aware of common food items such a a chocolate, and some plants that may be harmful to your pet.

If you know your pet has swallowed or had contact with something that may be harmful, call your vets immediately.

❤️If your pet is inan accident, ensure you can transport them to the vets safely.
While transporting your injured pet to a vets keep them confined in a small area to reduce the risk of additional injury.
Pet carriers work well, or you can use a box or other container (but make sure your pet has enough air). For large dogs, use a blanket, or something similar to act as a stretcher.

❤️If your pet is bleeding. Use a clean cloth or towel to apply firm pressure directly over the bleeding site.
* Avoid checking to see if the bleeding has stopped until you’ve applied pressure for at least three minutes.
* If you see blood soaking through the applied towel/cloth, do not remove it. Instead, add towels on top of previous layers to avoid disturbing any blood clots that might have formed.

❤️ If your pet is having a seizure
Keep your pet away from any objects (including furniture) that might hurt them. Do not try to restrain the pet, or startle them out of the seizure.
Avoid placing your hands in or near your pets mouth.
Then contact your vets for advice.

❤️First aid care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save your pet’s life until you can get them veterinary care. In case of an emergency, call Corner Vets on 02086416126
or our Streatham Hill Hospital if your emergency is out of hours

Todays theme essential to responsible pet ownership is

Travel with care

❤️Traveling with pets requires advance planning and coordination to keep everybody safe.

❤️Whether you’re taking a short car trip or flying to another country, getting your pet safely to your destination requires special precautions. These range from proper restraints during travel to veterinary exams and travel certificates. Plan ahead, and know exactly what’s needed when you travel with pets of different species.

https://thecornervet.co.uk/pet-travel-advice/

❤️Every year, hundreds of pets die from heat exhaustion because they are left in parked vehicles.
Your vehicle can quickly reach a temperature that puts your pet at risk of serious illness and even death, even on a day that doesn't seem hot to you. And cracking the windows makes no difference.

❤️ A loose, small pet could crawl down in the footwell, interfering with use of the brake or accelerator pedal.

❤️A small pet sitting in your lap could be injured or killed by the airbag or could be crushed between your body and the airbag in a collision, and a large pet leaning across your lap can interfere with your view of the road and can be injured by the air bag in a collision.

❤️ The risks associated with pets in vehicles don't end with heatstroke. Just as you should always wear your seatbelt to protect you in case of a collision, your pet should always be properly restrained while in the vehicle. That means a secure harness or a carrier.

❤️And not only could your pet be injured in the collision, but it might also increase your risk of collision by distracting you and taking your attention away from where it should be – on the road.

The PET travel scheme allows UK pet owners to take their dogs, cats and ferrets to other European countries and return without need for quarantine.

🐾Love your pet? See your vet!🐾

❤️Regular preventive care is critical to keep pets healthy and improve both quality and length of life. It also can save owners a great deal of money in the long run.

❤️Don’t wait to take your pet to the vet only when it’s visibly sick or injured. Pets often hide signs of illness, and regular check-ups are vital to catching health problems early. Early treatment means better health for your pet.

❤️To help our owners do just this we offer our VIP schemes to offer affordable care.

Todays theme essential to responsible pet ownership is

🐾Nutrition and exercise matter🐾

❤️Worldwide, studies estimate that up to 63% of pet cats and 59.3% of pet dogs are overweight or obese. This condition is linked with many diseases, including osteoarthritis and feline diabetes.

❤️29% of small animals are also overweight

❤️Obesity in rabbits is just as common of an occurrence as obesity in dogs and cats.

❤️Many people face the same issue, so it is encouraged for pet owners to get regular exercise—with their pets!
Small pets should also be given space to exercise away from their cages.

❤️This improves cardiovascular health, helps both pets and people maintain a healthy weight, supports good mental health for both owner and pet, and strengthens the human-animal bond.

❤️Nutrition is important to both weight management and overall health. Your vet can advise you on how much to feed your pet and whether the diet you’re providing is healthful – including both meals and treats!

🐾Behavioral health: Habits for happy pets🐾

Keep your pet happy and healthy by promoting positive interactions.

❤️Try creating an environment that encourages natural behaviors by introducing puzzles, games, and interactive toys, or learning new skills.

❤️Activities like target training are wonderful options for dogs and cats—and even other pets, like fish!

❤️You can also promote good behavior by helping your pets get comfortable in new situations by safely exposing them to a variety of interactions with other animals, people, places, and activities.

❤️Provide praise, play and treats to reward engagement. Allow the dog or cat to withdraw if he or she is uncomfortable. Move at a pace appropriate for your pet's personality.

❤️Getting your new addition used to visiting the vets is essential.
We want your newest family member to get off to the best possible start, so we offer all healthy puppies and kittens free health checks until they are six months of age.
