As Christmas fast approaches and the year draws to a close, I’d like to take a moment to express my heartfelt thanks. Thank you for putting your trust in me to help you navigate through the challenges you have faced with your beloved canines.

I’ve met so many lovely people and amazing dogs this year, watching your progress and in turn your relationship with your dogs grow is very special, It’s been a true pleasure working with you all!

I’d also like to say thank you for all the recommendations and reviews, they help massively! They enable people find the right trainer but more importantly, they help the dogs and they are the real reason I do what I do.

If any of you are experiencing any issues over the Christmas period, drop me a message and I’ll do my best to help.

But for now… I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous new year!

‘The Power of Play’

When discussing how to train dogs, what many people do not realise is that one of the most important components in training is play!

Structured play not only builds a good relationship between you and your dog but creates better engagement and if done correctly, can speed up learning.

When Axle and Ava were little pups, I would play tug with them, letting them win and boosting their confidence. I kept sessions short to keep them wanting more.

Why not incorporate play into your training routine, if your dog is toy motivated, play tug / throw their ball as their reward. If your dog is food motivated why not throw food for them to chase.

We talk often about work and play and they are always spoken about as being in seperate categories, when it comes to training dogs, if you can combine the two you will create more motivation in your dog and maximise learning.

The best thing you can buy for your dog this time of year…

When the nights are getting shorter and the weather isn’t as kind. What can you buy for your dog to help keep them stimulated?

Many people suggest a Kong or a Snuffle mat? Perhaps you’ve bought a treat dispenser toy?

I personally recommend buying yourself a waterproof coat 🫢😂

Dogs need to be exercised and stimulated no matter what the weather is doing, why should your dog miss out just because it’s raining?

Bonfire night and the magic pill…

As Bonfire night fast approaches, the vast majority of dogs do not need CBD oil or a sedative from the vet, they need desensitisation and something called Counter Conditioning, a process where you change your pets emotional response, attitude or feelings to a stimulus.

Play a firework soundtrack (I use the one on Spotify) whilst engaging your dog in a fun enrichment activity or when giving them their favourite treats. Leave it playing at a low level and gradually increase the volume over time, your dog will become desensitised to the noise.

Don’t over fuss when they look unsure, be confident and act normally. Dogs feed off our emotions, so if we make a big deal of the noise, they will too.

I’ve just been sent a message asking what the point of this exercise is if it’s just for ‘fancy obedience’? The answer is, it’s not just for ‘fancy obedience’ it is an excellent way to strengthen your dogs hind quarters.

It’s the reason I teach every one of my dogs to ‘back up’. It is beneficial for breeds such as the German Shepherd and other large breeds, especially as they are ageing.

So, in short, ‘rear end awareness’ does help to achieve flashy obedience. But, it also has many health benefits in keeping your dog fit and healthy. ☺️ 🐾
