We’ve all seen those dogs doing a pretty heel haven’t we? Perfect positioning, great posture, rock solid engagement etc? But do you know how much training and effort goes into proofing that kind of behaviour? SO MUCH!! I think we often see videos of the finished product, but rarely see the beginning steps, the practicing over and over again, working on the most precise details to get it perfect etc. Whether you want a pretty obedience heel or just a dog that can walk next to you reliably, the first stages are all the same!
Here I am working with Winnie teaching her the basics for a heel for the first ever time! I think it’s really important to show where trainers start off, and what they can achieve. Because the reality is all dogs start off the same - haven’t no clue what you’re wanting from them! This is what the very first stage looks like, using a hand lure, directional changes and rewarding when anywhere near the correct position. Fine tuning comes in so much later!

Is your dog under stimulated? One of the biggest causes for unwanted behaviours is lack of stimulation 🙌🏻

One of the most important components to a having a dog off lead? Teaching them to walk past distractions!
This was my first session with Fynn, who absolutely loves other dogs, making recalling him away from them rather tricky! By teaching him to walk close, combined with a release cue, he can still be off lead having fun, and greet other dogs when his owner allows 🐶

Training isn’t easy, linear, or fast - but it’s so worth it 🙌🏻

Always working on something! - today I was solidifying Hugo’s “leave it” - something that he has known since a puppy but you can’t practice it too much! It’s so important for a dog to have a strong leave cue, there’s so many scenarios where they could come across something dangerous to them (or just not something you want them to have - any sock thief’s out there??) and you need to know that you can stop them taking it! I teach every puppy (and older dogs) I work with a strong leave command, starting with basic things working all the way up to other dogs, their favourite toys, food, wildlife etc If you need help working on this with your dog, let me know! #dogwalking #dogtraining #dogtrainer #greatdane
