Well what a difference a day makes. They have now all discovered the tunnel and the toys as well as each other and having so much fun playing after breakfast and a top up from mum. I love this stage, watching them play and interact with each other. The tunnel is always a firm favourite 🥰 They’ll be out running around the house in no time now.

Puppies are 3 1/2 weeks now and downstairs, enjoying there raw food, exploring there new pen and toys and today was there first loud thunderstorm noise starting the desensitisation to all sorts of sounds. As you can see, they slept through 🤣

Pups are downstairs and loving their raw food. Lots of noise as they get used to their new environment. Toilet training has started and it doesn’t take long for them to learn where to toilet. 4 have already used it. As they get used to the new area they will start to play with the toys and learn lots of new things and experiences. 💜🩷❤️💚💙💛

Puppies had their first taste of raw weaning paste today. I actually gave them a little bit today before they move downstairs tomorrow. They all had a good go at it as you can see in the video then a milk top up from mum. Puppy pen is set up with toys, grass toilet area and sleeping crate so they get used to puppy crates. Lots of new experiences for them tomorrow and they are definitely ready for it. Let the fun begin 🥰

These puppies melt my heart. They are so alert now, enjoying cuddles and walking rather than crawling now. 🥰 In less than a week they’ll be downstairs in their pen and exploring my home with the rest of my girls. They begin to listen to various sounds and become a real part of the family and of course will start to play with toys and the famous tunnel that all my puppies have loved and has given my families hours of joy watching them and of course they’ll get their first taste of solid food which always goes down a storm. Looking forward to having them downstairs with the family as they develop and grow ❤️🩷💙💛💜💚

Written by Julia Baxter but sharing for education. The number of merle cockers I'm seeing is terrifying for the breed 😔

I thought I’d just clarify a few points regarding breeding, buying and registering of Merle dogs. The following are facts.

Breeds of dog that can be registered with the Kennel Club with the colour Merle:

Australian Shepherd
Beauceron
Bergamasco
Border Collie
Dachshund (colour known as Dapple)
Great Dane
Pyrenean sheepdog (long haired)
Collie (Rough)
Collie (smooth)
Shetland Sheepdog
Corgi (Cardigan Welsh)

The Kennel Club states :

“If your puppy is of a breed not mentioned and is merle, we regret that it will not be possible to register it. You must not register it as another colour.”

Cocker Spaniel is not on the list therefore it is not possible to register a cocker spaniel as Merle.

If you have been sold a Merle cocker with Kennel Club certificates than this has been fraudulent.

Some breeders have got around this by advertising “Merle” litters but registering them as “Roan”. This is again fraudulent.

Merle markings are present at birth whereas Roan markings tend to show through later.

Having a Non KC Merle cocker spaniel doesn’t make it legitimate. It isn’t possible to have a Merle cocker spaniel without it being a crossbreed. I believe that Collies and Dachshunds are generally the breeds being used to cross with cockers. If this is the case you have a cocker cross.

There is no such thing as a Merle cocker.

You can have a Merle cocker cross, just as you can have a Sprocker, Cockerpoo, labradoodle etc

If this is what you intended to buy and you are happy with your choice then that’s absolutely 100% fine. The reason for this post is to make people aware that there are unscrupulous breeders who hoodwink people into buying something that doesn’t exist.

How is Merle inherited?

“This type of coat is caused by a variation of a particular gene. Each dog has two copies of every gene; one that they inherit from their mother and one they inherit from their father.
The merle gene variant is dominant, which means that a dog only needs one copy, inherited from either of their parents, to have a Merle coat.”

Health concerns.

The Kennel Club will not register puppies out of two Merle parents.

“Dogs that have two copies of the merle gene variant, inherited from both of their parents, have an increased risk of problems with their eyes and ears, causing blindness and/or deafness.”

I hope this has clarified things a bit and that people will take time to read the information. There really is a bit more going on then “pretty colouring” and “rare markings”. Make sure you don’t get conned!!

For those that have regrettedly fallen into the trap, your dog will, I’m sure be a healthy and happy pet/worker!! Breeding from these dogs is not advised.

I’m sure many have seen the news this evening regarding puppy farming. Puppy farming is a huge problem and it’s not always as obvious as seeing poor conditions that a puppy is in. There are so many so called breeders who move mum and puppies for that cute photo, to show a nice home set up but the pups are not actually kept in that home or those conditions. I myself have had families come to me who have been so badly duped and even lost money to puppy scams. I cannot impress how important it is to research your breeders, only go to a licensed breeder because they go through very strict assessments and are monitored by their local council. Puppies need huge amounts of care, cleaning is a full time job, all day long, puppies are fed many times a day when little once mum starts weaning and they are on solid food. They need socialisation, stimulation, introducing to all sorts of sounds, play and of course need regular handling if you are to have a puppy that’s healthy, not nervous, and well adjusted. I personally believe this can’t be done if a breeder is leaving mum and puppies to go to work. And yet I have personally been aware of people having a litter and going off to their full time job. They can produce the cute puppy photos and they’re even raised in their home but they are left in a pen alone all day long. This can be so damaging to the development of a puppy in the first 8 weeks.

Please please do your research, ask as many questions as you need, ask to see their license (if they have one they will have no problem seeing it) check all parents health test certificates, check parents KC registration yourselves and make sure you speak in person to a breeder and ask for a video call to see mum and pups. When you visit make sure to observe if there’s lots of puppy equipment around the home, plenty of toys and stimulation, that they are able to have constant contact with mum. If it feels wrong, if anything feels off, it probably is. Go with your instincts.

Buying cheap, buying quick, being able to go and pick a puppy with no background information, not seeing mum with pups are all red flags. Let’s do our bit to put a stop to puppy farming and the breeding of unhealthy dogs. Let stop puppies and dogs suffering.

There are many excellent breeders out there you just have to do your research. Deciding to bring a puppy into your lives is a huge decision and a huge responsibility and deserves consideration and real research.
After all they do become our best friends and part of our family. They deserve the best right from the start. ❤️
