A Simple Guide to Checking Your Dog’s Teeth

Regular dental checks are essential for your dog’s health. Using reward-based training makes the process positive—start with small steps and plenty of treats.

Training Your Dog for Dental Checks

Gently touch their lips and reward them.
Gradually lift their lips, then reward again.
Lightly touch their teeth and gums, always rewarding.
If they seem anxious, slow down and try again later.
Once comfortable, fully examine their mouth while keeping it a positive experience.

Step 1: Check Their Gums

Healthy gums should be salmon pink. Watch for:
✅ Redness, ulcers, bleeding, lumps, or exposed tooth roots.
✅ Black or grey patches—these are normal pigmentation.

Step 2: Check Their Teeth
✅ Ensure no teeth are loose, cracked, or missing.
✅ Adult dogs shouldn’t have baby teeth.
✅ Look for tartar buildup (hard, brown deposits).

Step 3: Check Their Breath
✅ It won’t be minty fresh, but it shouldn’t smell overly bad.

We have recently moved to Riverside Grooming after using a groomer out of Newark for many years. Wilma comes home looking beautiful and very settled without having the anxiety of having a long way to travel out of Newark. I would highly recommend Riverside Grooming to anyone.

🦷 Exciting news for February 🦷

February is ‘Pet Dental Health Month’
With this is mind, I will now be offering a teeth cleaning service using the emmipet ultrasonic tooth brush.
