Children can have such a fabulous relationship with dogs and dogs in turn can teach children so many fantastic things; leadership, responsibility, love, friendship, kindness, sorrow… the list really does go on.
However, the relationship between our children and our dogs needs to be managed to make sure they both benefit, and yes, they do need to be supervised at all times… and yes, they should never be left alone together.
When I work with people who have dogs and young families, there’s always resistance to this: “I trust my dog, he would never hurt my child”, “they love each other so much my daughter climbs into his dog bed”, “they play chase for hours”, “my daughter loves to dress the dog up”, and on it goes…
While this is all very lovely and straight out of a Disney movie, it really is a potential disaster waiting to happen.
So now more than ever, as we are distracted by the festivities and getting ready for Xmas, with little ones potentially running around, please be aware of your dog's communication and stress levels, and rather than risk an accident, leave your dog out of the thick of it where he can just relax and be a dog...
