I'm so proud of this little girl and the progress she has made since joining our group walks.

She initially joined us for a couple of walks to help with her anxiety around other dogs, specifically large dogs. I started her out with a small group of my quietest and smallest dogs and despite being extremely anxious at first she started to realize that she had nothing to worry about and that other dogs could, in fact, be fun!

Six weeks in and she is now a confident member of the pack and it melts my heart to see her dashing between the bigger dogs having so much fun 🥰

Just look at her happy face 💝

🐾🎇 Coping with Firework season 🎇🐾

As the nights draw in , we are entering firework season … Did you know that at least 50% of our dogs are scared of fireworks 😢

Fireworks can be frightening for people, but for dogs, the noise is even more intense due to their incredible hearing!

Tackling a dog’s fear of fireworks can be challenging and will require some preparation, as there is rarely a quick fix. Our suggestions below offer strategies to help your dog, whether you're planning ahead or looking for a more immediate solution to help them cope ….

🎇Desensitising your dog to fireworks early can make a huge difference….
Start by playing firework sounds at a low volume and gradually increase it while offering treats and comfort.

🎇 Distractions by music…
You want to muffle the sounds. Turn the TV up or play some calming dog music. Classic FM have a special radio program on Bonfire night specifically for our canine companions.

🎇Keep the big bangs away…
Shut the curtains/ blinds / doors.
Limit being outdoors during firework displays and always supervise them in the garden whenever possible.

🎇 Stay Secure…
Keep your walks / adventures to daylight hours.
Dogs can run when spooked. Make sure access to the outside is controlled, all exits and gardens are secure and their microchip is up to date.

🎇 Create a safe space / den…
Ideally you want the safe space in / near your dog's favourite spot and somewhere they would naturally go. Make it super cosy, with blankets and bedding and add in their favourite toys and other distractions.
The plan is for this to be your dogs safe space, dark and soundproof (or muffled) is what you are aiming for. Use blankets to cover the area, cardboard sheets can line the outside of a crate.

🎇Aromatherapy…
Aromatherapy such as using candles, wax melts, room sprays and diffusers can be used to create a calming environment, but please make sure you are using pet friendly calming fragrances such as lavender and vanilla. Please check out our website for pet friendly calming candles and wax melts.

🎇 Thundershirts…
Some pets need a bit of extra support to help them feel safe , items like thundershirts can help them feel safe by recreating a hug around their body. A snood or something similar to cover their ears might also be beneficial for those with sensitive hearing.

🎇Calming aids…
There are several calming aids on the market designed to help our pets stay calm during stressful situations. In extreme circumstances please contact your vet to discuss possible calming medications - please don’t think about being a failure if your pets need additional help and support.

🎇 Reassurance…
They may come to you for reassurance, it is important that you do not act like there is something to worried about, if your dog comes to you for reassurance then you want to be there to provide it. It is best not to leave them alone whilst fireworks are going off as your dog could panic further. Some animals prefer no attention, so just judge it on their behaviour - our canine companions are experts at communicating with us, we need to learn how to interpret their needs / behaviours.

Let’s make this fireworks season a little less scary for our canine companions one paw at a time… 🐾😊

Have any tips that have worked for your dog? Share them below!

❓Does your dog check in with you while walking on the lead?
❓Can you get their attention as you walk along?
❓Do they listen to you?
❓Can they walk calmly?

These are all fundamental skills that your dog needs to master before we can even think about getting them to walk on a loose lead, and they will all be covered in our Walking in Balance Workshop. Only 10 days left before the adventure begins ✨🌟

Saturday the 29th of June 2024 10am - 4.30pm at Muddifords Court, Willand, Devon, EX15 2QG.
