It’s that time of year again, . 🧨

Fireworks are extremely stressful for rabbits, so please take care to ease their stress as much as possible.

🎆 Bring outdoor rabbits inside into an unheated room.

🎆 If not possible, cover enclosures with blankets or duvets.

🎆 For indoor rabbits, soundproof your home by closing windows and doors and leave a radio or TV on to mask the noise.

🎆 Ensure your buns have plenty of hiding places where they can feel safe.

🎆 Lastly, having a rabbit companion will help keep rabbits calm - another reason why you should always have more than one bun.

I am very lucky, my dog, Ollie doesn’t bat an eyelid at fireworks, in fact if we’re out on an evening walk and a firework goes off I probably jump more than he does. But Ollie is a rarity, for many pets and their owner's bonfire night, and fireworks at any time of the year, are extremely stressful, And of course, they can be hazardous for garden wildlife too.

In our last post, we mentioned that rabbits don’t like to be picked up or handled. But handling pet rabbits is essential for grooming and cutting their nails.

In the wild, rabbits’ nails are worn down naturally by digging burrows and hopping around on rough surfaces all day. Most pet rabbits cannot do this, so manually cutting their nails regularly is essential for their health – which means having to handle them.

While we know that this can be very difficult, you should NEVER trance your rabbits to make the job easier. Trancing is very cruel, no matter how easy it makes the job.

To cut your rabbits’ nails, you can either hold your rabbits with its backside supported as if it is sitting up to cut the nails or place it on a towel on a worktop and very gently pull the foot to the side to get to the nails.

If you aren’t confident with cutting your rabbits’ nails, then you can ask your vet or vet nurse to show you how to do it safely. It’s fairly straight-forward, so it’s worth knowing how to do it! 🐾
