NEW 0% finance payment plans!

We’re now offering CarefreeCredit at The Vet Morden.

CarefreeCredit plans give our customers the option of a 0% finance agreement to help with paying larger veterinary bills.

With so many people being affected by the cost-of-living crisis, we never want our customers to be in a position where their pet needs treatment that they can’t afford to pay upfront. Even customers with pet insurance policies can still be faced with unexpected bills that need paying in a lump sum.

For peace of mind, these new plans give our customers the freedom of:
• 0% finance over 6 months on bills from £500-£2,000
• 0% finance over 12 months on bills from £2,000-£6,000

CarefreeCredit are a 3rd party and will run credit checks for eligibility. Applications are completed online and the decision is instant.

If you have any questions about CarefreeCredit, our team will be more than happy to help. Please call 020 3780 7903 or email [email protected].

Today is National Wildlife Day! Here's a throwback to when this little chap walked himself to The Vet. Coincidentally, he did need medical treatment! 🦔

Our nurses took him in and got him the parasite treatment he needed. He has since been rehabilitated and released back into the wild.❤️

Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day 🌈🐾 This is a day to honour and remember our cherished pets who have passed away.

The connection we have with our pets is completely unique and for many of us, it's one of the closest relationships we'll form in our lifetime. The loss of a much-loved pet can be truly devastating and any grief you feel afterwards is entirely valid.

We have trained bereavement counsellors in our team who can provide support to anyone who is struggling after the loss of their pet. If you think a call might be helpful, please speak to your local surgery and they will set this up for you.

Beyond this, there are charities who have trained volunteers on hand to offer bereavement support & additional emotional support. This includes:

❤️ Blue Cross - an animal welfare charity with a wealth of experienced professionals to provide bereavement support. They offer a free confidential helpline and email service. Their helpline is open from 8:30am – 8:30pm, 7 days a week. You can contact them on 0800 096 6606 or alternatively, email [email protected].

❤️ Cat's Protection - their Paws to Listen grief support service offers a free and confidential phone line where you can talk to one of their trained volunteer listeners. You can access the helpline on 0800 024 94 94 and it’s open 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday - excluding Bank Holidays.

❤️ Samaritans - you can speak to the Samaritans for free, at any time, from any phone, on 116 123.

❤️ Shout - Text SHOUT to 85258 to receive free, confidential help and support 24/7.

We welcome the law that came into force over the weekend, making the theft of a cat or taking or detaining a dog a criminal offence in England and Northern Ireland.

Under the Pet Abduction Act 2024, anyone found guilty of stealing a cat or dog could face up to five years in prison as well as a fine.

Research suggests that 2,290 dogs were reported stolen in 2023, equivalent to six animals a day.

Steps you can take to keep your pet safe include:

- Getting them microchipped (this is a legal requirement).
- Not letting your dog out of your line of vision on walks.
- Not leaving your dog outside a shop unaccompanied, even if you're only popping in briefly.
- Not leaving your dog in the garden unattended.

Our team have plenty of availability for microchipping. This is a quick, straight-forward procedure and will give you the best chance of being reunited with your pet in the unthinkable event they go missing.

Be on the lookout for blue-green algae! ⚠️

Blue-green algae is highly poisonous, and can even be toxic to dogs. But what exactly is blue-green algae, what does it look like, and when & where are you most likely to come across it?

Blue-green algae is a term used to describe a group of bacteria, called cyanobacteria. It's most commonly found in non-flowing, fresh water such as lakes, ponds and rivers.

Hot weather can cause it to grow rapidly, and you may see this as a 'bloom' across the surface of the water. Other conditions can trigger it to thrive, so be aware of its presence at other times of the year as well.

Blue-green algae can look like:

- A blue-green scum has appeared on the surface of the water
- Green flakes, greenish bundles or brown dots in a pond, lake or stream
- A green, blue-green or greenish-brown paint on the surface of the water
- Foam around the edges of ponds and lakes

⛔ If in doubt, do NOT let your dog enter the water. ⛔

If your dog has entered water that you suspect may contain blue-green algae, you MUST get them to the vet immediately. Symptoms of poisoning and even fatality can occur within as little as 15 minutes.

➡️ Sensitivity to heat

This doesn't necessarily mean they have BOAS, but it may be worth bringing them in to see our team so we can check them over and make sure they're happy and healthy.

Our team will be happy to advise if you have any questions about BOAS or what the surgery involves: https://www.thevet.co.uk/contact-us/

📢 Direct pet insurance claims - with no admin fee!

Our customers can benefit from direct pet insurance claims with pre-authorisation from their insurance provider. This means your insurer pays us directly for the cost of your pet's treatment, so you're not left out of pocket. 💰

To help us process a direct claim efficiently:

Before your appointment:
☑️ Contact your insurance company to give your permission for us to speak directly to your insurer – and let us know when this permission has been granted.
☑️ Check your policy so that you’re aware of the excess and any co-payments that your insurer stipulates, as these will need to be paid to your surgery on the day of your pet’s appointment.

On the day of your appointment:
☑️ Bring your insurance documentation along to your pet's appointment.
☑️ Bring your fully completed claim form to your pet’s appointment, ensuring all policyholder sections are covered. The form needs to be signed & dated in the relevant sections, confirming the payment is to be sent directly to us.

Our team will then be able to undertake all the necessary administration work relating to your claim. It's as simple as that!

We recommend all our customers take out a good quality pet insurance product. We are a Vetsure-accredited group and, as such, promote the Vetsure range of pet insurance products. To find out more, visit vetsure.com. If you’re one of our Pet Health Plan members, you’re eligible for a 5-week free trial.

⚠️ PLEASE SHARE ⚠️ Don't hesitate to take immediate action if you see a dog in a hot car. Every second can be the difference between life and death.

18/07/2024

It's going to be a hot one over the next couple of days! ☀️ Watch this short video below to familiarise yourself with the signs of heatstroke.

⚠️ Heatstroke can be fatal. Spotting the signs early and treating it quickly can improve your pet's chances of survival.

Best of all - we recommend taking sensible precautions to prevent heatstroke in the first place! This includes:

✔️ Going for a walk either first thing in the morning or later in the evening when the air temp is lower and the ground is cooler. If in doubt – skip the walk altogether.
✔️ Not leaving your pet alone in a hot area, such as a car - even for a short period of time.
✔️ Ensuring your pet has constant access to fresh water.
✔️ Making sure your pet has access to shade if outdoors.
✔️ Providing a damp towel for them to stretch out on = heaven.

It's not just dogs we need to be mindful of in hot weather. Cats, other small furries and feathered friends will benefit from being kept in the cool with easy access to water.

Is your pet scratching their ears and/or shaking their head a familiar sight? 👀 Read on to find out what might be causing this, and how you can take advantage of our July special offer to help put a stop to it!

Excessive ear scratching and head shaking can be the result of an overgrowth of your pet's own bacteria or yeast causing inflammation & discomfort in their ears. This is very common, and ear cytology can help us treat it.

Ear cytology involves taking a sample from your pet's ear using a cotton bud & a**lysing this under a microscope. This tells us whether it's yeast overgrowth or bacterial overgrowth (pictured), and helps us treat it appropriately.

Frequent head shaking & ear scratching isn't normal. If your pet is showing these symptoms, please bring them in for further investigation.

Special July offer - we're offering ear cytology at a discounted rate from £25 (previously £65). Book your next appointment: https://www.thevet.co.uk/contact-us/

Noticing any of the following symptoms in your flat-faced dog?

- Snorting/snoring?
- Coughing?
- Shortness of breath?
- Inability to tolerate exercise?
- Sensitivity to heat?

They may have BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome).

This is a lifelong condition that affects a dog's ability to breathe, exercise, eat, play & sleep comfortably. Unfortunately, it's usually progressive (gets worse with age).

Surgery can help to widen their airways, leading to an improved quality of life.

Until the end of August 2024, we're offering up to 20% OFF the cost of BOAS surgery by reducing our price to £2,000. This is delivered by our team of exceptional veterinary specialists with 24/7 in-patient aftercare for ultimate peace of mind.

After a long wait, it feels like summer has finally arrived! ☀️ Please be mindful of the summer heat when walking your dog.

Here's a quick & easy way to check the pavement temperature 👇

⚠️ If in doubt, please don't walk your dog. Consider waiting until later in the evening/earlier in the morning when the pavement and air temperature is cooler.

A dog has never died from missing one walk, but dogs have died from one walk in the heat. Don't take the risk 💔

We couldn't possibly end National Volunteer Week without mentioning Terry Pearson - our Head of Commercial Services & Estate. Terry has been a Trustee at Bradford Cinderella Club since 1990 (yes, you read that right!).

The Cinderella Club has one basic aim, which is to improve life for the underprivileged children of Bradford. They work to achieve this through enabling them to:

➡️ Participate in activities alongside their school friends.
➡️ Obtain some of the desirables in life that others take for granted.
➡️ Obtain some of the necessities for life within their own area of need.

Terry says: "As an active member of the charity, I try to bring my life skills to benefit the club and the children it exists to assist. This could be anything, ranging from providing input into funding applications, or generally using my knowledge dealing with the situations life in the 21st Century throws at entities such as ours."

Terry has also been Chairman/Trustee & Managing Director of Eccleshill Mechanics Institute since 2017. Terry is involved with this vital community hub across all levels, from securing the building for the community with a 99-year lease, to cooking up a storm with his bistro nights and fish & chip Fridays! 👨‍🍳

This National Volunteer Week, we thought we'd share the adventures of Head Nurse Megan who jetted off to volunteer her skills & expertise in Greece!

Megan spent 2 weeks volunteering on the island of Paxos on a workplace-sponsored trip, facilitated by local charity PAWS (Paxos Animal Welfare Society). PAWS runs entirely on the support of volunteers.

On her experience, Megan said...

“My first impressions were how amazing the facilities were; from having a fully functioning anaesthetic machine with an oxygen generator, and an autoclave for ensuring we could safely sterilise the instruments being used.

“The amazing team of volunteers would spend a lot of time out on the island trapping cats for us. We would then safely transfer them to crush cages so they could be anaesthetised and prepared for surgery.

“The cats were provided with adequate sedation and pain relief to allow the Vet to perform surgery while myself and a fellow veterinary nurse would take it in turns monitoring or preparing the next patient for surgery.

“All cats are ear tipped so once fully recovered, they can be safely released back and identified as neutered so they are not trapped again.

“As well as neutering we would provide other health care as needed, such as removing rotten and broken teeth, ear tipping for cats suffering from cancer, and for one patient, we even placed a makeshift dressing on after finding out he had fractured his leg!

“With all our hard work, we managed to neuter over 109 cats! What an achievement for only 2 weeks on the island. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to break that record on my next trip if we can!”

Let's face it, some of our pets have zero concept of personal space. And most of the time, we absolutely love it! However, if they have particularly pongy breath, this may cause problems (for your nose, at least) when they lean in a little closer...👃

Did you know pet breath shouldn't actually smell bad? By maintaining a good oral hygiene routine, you can keep suspicious smells at bay, as well as many other signs of dental disease. 🦷

During a dental health check, our team can examine your pet's teeth and spot any potential issues before they have a chance to develop into anything more serious (or expensive).

If you have any concerns about your pet's teeth, don't delay coming in to see our team!
