Mel (CEO - pictured) and Becky (Head of Operations & Area Manager) were due to take on their fundraising challenge for Support Dogs today, walking the 25.3 miles between The Pet Vet Waltham Forest and The Pet Vet Morden.

With the forecasted temperatures reaching 33 degrees, this has been postponed for health and safety reasons. They'll be undertaking the same challenge on Friday 25 July when hopefully the weather will be pleasant but not quite this hot! 🥵

Thank you so much to everyone who has sponsored them so far. If anyone else would like to sponsor them on this challenge, we'd be so grateful! 🫶

🐇💡 5 fascinating rabbit facts you might not know!
In celebration of and our love for all things bunny, here are some hoppy facts to brighten your day 🥕💚

1️⃣ Rabbits can’t vomit!
Unlike some animals, rabbits physically can’t be sick — which makes good diet and digestion super important.

2️⃣ Their teeth never stop growing!
Rabbit teeth grow continuously, so regular chewing on hay and safe toys is essential to keep them at the right length.
3️⃣ They love having a bunny buddy!
Rabbits are naturally social and happiest living with another rabbit friend — preferably neutered and bonded.

4️⃣ They love to dig and explore!
In the wild, rabbits dig complex burrow systems. Giving your pet space to dig or tunnels to explore helps them stay mentally stimulated.

5️⃣ A “binky” means they’re happy!
Ever seen your rabbit jump, twist, and zoom around? That’s called a binky — the ultimate sign of a joyful bunny.

Rabbits are amazing animals with complex needs, and so much personality! Let’s give them the love and care they deserve 💚🐾

🐰💚 continues!
Today we’re answering another common question in line with this year’s theme: “Happy, Hoppy Homes” 🏡✨

🔍 Q: What goes into my rabbits’ housing?

Creating the perfect bunny home means making sure all their physical and emotional needs are met 🐇💕

✅ Hiding places — Rabbits are prey animals, so they need safe spots to hide and feel secure. Provide at least one hide per rabbit, with two entrances/exits

✅ Soft, safe bedding — Use dust-free hay or rabbit-safe bedding to keep them cosy and comfy

✅ Toilet area — Set up a separate toilet zone using newspaper and/or paper-based, non-expanding litter (keep it well away from their sleeping area!)

✅ Feeding hay — Provide unlimited good-quality feeding hay in racks or separate areas from bedding

✅ Fresh water — Always make sure your bunnies have clean water available at all times

Making these small changes can make a huge difference in your rabbit’s daily life and happiness! 🐾💚

🌟 Rabbit Awareness Week is here! 🌟

This year’s theme is “Happy, Hoppy Homes” 🏡🐰 — and it’s all about making sure bunnies have the safe, spacious housing they need to thrive. 💚

The campaign, led by the Rabbit Awareness Action Group (RAAG), is shining a light on what proper indoor and outdoor housing really looks like for rabbits’ welfare.

Throughout the week, we’ll be answering some of your most frequently asked questions to help you give your rabbits the best life possible! 🐾

🔍 Today’s question is:
""How big should my rabbits’ housing be?""

✅ Your rabbits’ housing should always be connected to a larger space where they can hop, stretch, and explore — both day and night! Whether it’s a bunny-proofed room indoors or a secure outdoor run, freedom to move is essential 🐇

Minimum housing size: at least 2ft high x 2ft wide x 6ft long

Minimum run size: at least 3ft high x 6ft wide x 10ft long

But the more space, the better! Rabbits are active animals who love to run, jump, and binky just like they would in the wild 🌿

Keep your pet safe in the heat! ☀️

According to the British Veterinary Association - BVA survey during the 2022 heatwave, half (51%) of all vets in the UK saw cases of animals requiring treatment for heat-related illness. Dogs were the most common animal seen with heat-related conditions reported by 51% of small animal vets, followed by rabbits (9%) and cats (6%).

Please take sensible precautions in the heat and follow the advice in the article below - your pet's life depends on it.

https://www.bva.co.uk/news-and-blog/news-article/vets-issue-urgent-heatstroke-advice-for-pet-owners-as-temperatures-soar-across-the-uk/

With heat health warnings in place for many parts of the UK this week, the British Veterinary Association (BVA) is urging pet owners to take extra precautions to keep their animals safe and to act quickly if they spot early signs of heatstroke.

☀️ Warmer weather may be lovely for humans, but for short-nosed breeds of dog, it can prove to be a challenging and uncomfortable time. This is because warmer weather can trigger problems with their breathing, caused by BOAS, which stands for Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome.

🩺 In our latest blog post, Dr Javier Berron DVM, GPCert(SAS), MRCVS breaks down what BOAS is, the symptoms to watch out for and how we assess for BOAS.

In line with recommendations provided by the European Veterinary Dental Society, we strongly advise against anaesthesia-free dentals for the following reasons, as documented in a statement provided by the EVDS. This states the following:

Anaesthesia-free dental procedures:
❌ cannot allow full oral examination to be performed and vitally important diagnoses may be missed or delayed;
❌ do not allow full and effective cleaning of the most important sub-gingival areas;
❌ may actually cause damage to the tissues surrounding the teeth;
❌ may cause discomfort, pain and/or distress to the animal;
❌ are likely to delay customers accessing effective, proper oral care;
❌ if performed under the guise of a “dental treatment” could be considered misleading; unless the owners are made aware of the inadequate and potentially injurious nature of the procedure.

As stated by the EVDS: "Modern anaesthetic procedures, together with appropriate monitoring and support, carry very low levels of risk. In general terms the benefits of effective dental and periodontal treatment far outweigh the risks of the anaesthetic." ✅

If you have any concerns about your pet's oral hygiene or any questions about our dental procedures performed under anaesthesia, contact our team and they'll be more than happy to provide advice and reassurance!
