Flooding and Pets

Sadly, the UK has been hit by flooding in many areas.

This presents a number of challenges and risks to communities.

Local outbreaks of leptospirosis have been anecdotally reported following flood water, and this is mirrored by risks to humans after flooding.

We would advise that for this reason you avoid letting our pets play in standing flood water where there is risk of both sewage overflow, animal urine (and excrement) or farming run off, in case we run the increased risk of leptospirosis or a gastroenteritis.

It would be sensible to also check your pets Leptospirosis vaccination is up to date. These are very safe. Based on the most recent periodic safety update report data received for each product, the incidence of adverse animal events for L4 vaccine products this figure is 0.045%, fewer than 5 for L4, for every 10,000 doses sold. A recent conversation by our community raised anecdotal concerns of geographical outbreak of leptospirosis, the clinical signs are highly suggestive, and the presence of flood water this time of year could be a risk factor, as we see in human data.

Any outdoor animals should be checked regularly to ensure their enclosure isn't waterlogged and they have plentiful access to dry, warm bedding and food. They may need to be temporarily relocated.

It is also incredibly important to come together as a community. For those who have been flooded there is a long road ahead to return to normality after damage to the house. Making sure your friends and neighbours are okay, offering food and support and helping drop off food, including pet food, at local food banks can help.

As with anything, we know communities can remain strong when they come together.

We have had amazing helpers - members of the community and customers, staff members current and previous, friends and neighbouring businesses 💖

Our Burns Pet Nutrition rep even came down to help us for the day and a lovely guy from Maidenhead Aquatics has been helping us to make sure our fish tanks keep running!

The support and love we have received is overwhelming and I just don’t know how to even express my gratitude to you all 💞

We still have some work to do but we will get there 💪

Thank you everyone for being so kind, we will respond to you all as we can.

We sadly have had the odd hate message calling us disgusting for the animals that did not make it and we feel bad enough about this, but we literally could not get into the shop when this happened. All the staff are very upset over what has happened 🐾

Hi everyone, we need you help for the fish 🐠🐟

We have no power still in the shop and the fish (cold water & tropical) are still there in our tanks and will most likely pass away if they are not relocated 😢

We are asking if anyone has any space in their existing tanks or a spare tank, if they would like to come and get some fish, then to pop down.

Just to clarify we aren’t asking for payment for these, because we cannot guarantee they will survive or potentially cause any issues in your current tank. Therefore, taking the fish would be under each persons discretion and we wouldn’t be able to take any responsibility for any complications. However, we will say that the water does not look to be contaminated with the muddy water (it’s still clear as it was before), as the power switched off our sumps and this then stopped anything being pumped into the individual fish tanks.

We will be at the shop from 10am on Sunday if anyone does want to pop along, but please for safety stay outside the door and shout for us because it is very slippery inside with lots of stock
