If you fancy doing something interesting with your dog, how about mantrailing? Give it a go!

Mantrailing workshop on the 21st of February in Buckie ๐Ÿฆฎ

Introduction to Mantrailing is a 3 hour workshop that covers exactly what Mantrailing is, line handling, some theory & will get you & your dog started with a fun new hobby - think hide & seek!

Mantrailing is a dog sport which uses the natural abilities of the dog to find missing people after taking their scent. Itโ€™s a great way to enjoy your dog out in good company & boost your relationship by really letting your dog tap into their instincts. This sport is great for engaging your dogs brain & tiring them out. Itโ€™s a great way to build confidence in reactive or timid dogs around their triggers & also focuses and slows down dogs that are more exciteable.

This workshop will run from 1pm till 4pm, dogs will rest in cars between turns & itโ€™s ยฃ50 per dog.

If youโ€™d like to book a space please message the page directly, or contact Paws โ€˜nโ€™ Claws Training on instagram () & we can get you started on your Mantrailing journey! ๐Ÿถ

Next block begins Saturday 11th January 2025. Contact Karen for more info or to book your space.

The sports club I decoy for is having a great event this Sunday, you're dog can get their photo taken with Santa, and there are some fabulous stalls to get those Xmas gifts and Sports Club demos so you can see what we do (weather permitting!).

Santa Pawz welcomes everyone! ๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿป
We understand that some dogs may feel overwhelmed by crowds, other dogs, or unfamiliar faces. If your dog is nervous or reactive, please let us know on the day. We can arrange an alternative entrance and exit close to the photo area to avoid waiting in the queue.
If your dog isnโ€™t comfortable around Santa, theyโ€™re welcome to have their photo taken solo. We want to ensure every pet has a positive experience!

As clients of mine know, I'm always talking about consistency. It is one of the keys to successful dog training. In realistic terms, it's not possible to be 100% consistent but we should aim to be as close to 100% as we can.

It can also be very easy to think that in order to have a well trained dog you need to spend a lot of hours a week training. In fact, with a combination of all of the 5 keys to good dog training (consistency, motivation, leadership, timing and clear communication), you do not need to spend all the hours of the day to achieve your training goals with you dog.

I saw this the other day and thought that it sums up a healthy approach to dog training perfectly!

Happy Training!

I love this photo! This was circa 2016 when we lived in Spain and I did a lot of rescue work and fostering. We have my kids, Cullen (our black/white Jackadoodle, Poppy the Jack, Sally the Bod (now the OG of my current pack) and Thor the foster).

How do you like to spend your weekends? Relaxing walks with your dog, reading a good book with a glass of wine or following a Bob Ross tutorial on YouTube to create a lovely painting?

Sounds good! But it doesn't beat the adrenaline rush of learning how to decoy with a top female sport dog decoy and working towards not face planting after 2 seconds ๐Ÿ˜‚.

It's vitally important that if you are looking for a new dog that you understand what the dog needs, the character & traits of the breed, that genetics can play a part in their behaviour. Ask yourself if you can commit to giving the dog what it actually needs (not just treats and cuddles on the sofa!). A dog should fit into your lifestyle - so if throwing on a bite suit to let your Maligator (an apt nickname for the Belgian Malinios) enjoy the chase and the bite is not your idea of fun, then don't get one!

Last but not least, the loveable clown of the pack, Kane the Doberman ๐Ÿ˜‚.

Kane is also a Spanish rescue who came to me in October 2021(right photo is day after he arrived). He was around 12 - 18 months and was a bit too thin - even for a Doberman! He came to me as a foster with the potential to adopt - and I was soon smitten with him. I was told that his background was that he had been seized from a drug dealer at around 6 months old (fun fact: Kane's real name is Narco ๐Ÿ˜ฌ) so I was a little apprehensive about his character and whether he would be a bit neurotic ๐Ÿซ . He was actually very anxious and under confident and scared of everything (which explains why he didn't make a very good, intimidating drug dealer dog!).

We worked with him to get his weight up and his confidence up. He is still an anxious dog today but is miles better than he was, it may be down to genetics and breed traits that he'll always be a little anxious, but I'm there as pack leader to help him overcome anything worrying him. He is really reliable 98% when it comes to working (no-ones perfect, right?!), his recall is a dream and he tries his best as he loves to please. He is also the biggest do**us ever and makes us laugh with his goofy gaffs. He is a typical Dobie, the "velcro" dog is strong in him but I wouldn't have it any other way. He is the biggest in the pack and he has the biggest heart to match.

Broc - the last of the team to arrive but still a very valued member - and proof that it's a small world!

I used to help out in a rescue when I lived in Spain and one of the residents for a number of years was Broc (left photo). He was adopted around 2017/2018 and found his home in Scotland.

A few years after I moved back to Scotland, a friend of mine contacted me to say that the owner was looking to re-home Broc and would I take him. At that point I only had Sally and so I said he was welcome to join our pack. The owner changed their minds and kept him. Meanwhile, Kane appeared as a foster-to-adopt and being a young, under confident boy took up a lot of attention, time and training. A few months after Kane settled in, I was contacted again by my friend who said that the owner definitely wanted to rehome Broc and would I still take him....I wasn't sure now as Kane had arrived ( a 3 dog household, although something I'm used to, can be a lot of work!) and I asked for 24 hours to decide. Well, needless to say I didn't sleep that night....Broc was hitting the twilight years and I just knew if he got put in a rescue that chances of him coming out and into a home were slim to none. I told my friend the next day Broc could come and live out the rest of his days with me.

When I went to collect him it was a strange feeling - a dog I had walked, fed, watered and given love to years ago and that I thought I would never see again was coming back into my life.

He was overweight and didn't seem to want to walk far. He also pulled like a train from the off and had no lead manners. I got to work making him a healthy weight again and worked on his loose lead walking skills as well as taking him for long walks which he now thoroughly enjoys. (Right photo, Broc about 6 months after arriving).

Being a rescue his exact age is unknown but I reckon he's between 12 & 14. He still has a lot of oomph for his age, which is why we think he may be a Collie x Malinios mix - he is super smart, and if he had been in my home from his younger age he would have been a cracking working dog and family companion.

Broc does earn his keep by coming out to help with lessons and classes, but I haven't taught him obedience to the same level as Sally & Kane. I feel he deserves to be in retirement and because he is allowed to be a bit cheeky, he plays his part in the "unruly dog & owner" scenario we like to do to help reactive dogs perfectly!
