The Ex Batty Hens
Biri, Yani, Vinda and Lou were rescued from a “free range” farm back in 2016. Moon, Sky, Neet, Rose, Fern and Florrie were rescued from battery cages in 2017.
They were all bony thin, full of worms and lice and were shut inside (most of the free range hens are not even able to see the exit due to overcrowding). They were subjected to 20 hours of artificial light a day to force them to lay as many eggs as their bodies could produce. After 18 months of hell they are discarded like rubbish and sent for slaughter to end up in dog and cat food.
It took a while for them to settle in as they were terrified but once they felt the warmth of the sun on their backs, the soft grass beneath their feet they started to understand there was more to life than being imprisoned and only eating hormone induced layers pellets! They soon began to blossom.
After a good worming and lice treatments and a good varied diet with lots of treats, lots of cuddles and running free they chose to lay when they wanted to. Every egg they lay is treated as a gift.
