Taking dogs for group walks is great fun but we need to be fully engaged so that the dogs want to stay with us in our little group. As a dog walker we need to be the pack leader. I'm often found running with them, if you see me in the park running like a gazelle (I wish!!) that's why. It's to keep everyone engaged. 1) engagement - this is very important, if a dog gets bored they are more likely to wander off, we don't want that!! So I talk to your dogs loads, use positive reinforcement for behaviour I want to see and am actively guiding them 2) cardio exercise - some dogs need more than others but there is nothing better than seeing that gorgeous little face as we're running. Obviously I will tailor this to suit your dog and the free meet and greet is the perfect time to discuss this 🥰 3) settle everyone down - forming the pack happens quickly if everyone is happy, I tend to lead more for the first half and as they burn off their energy they are more inclined to sniff and settle into a calm mood to come home to you guys for lovely snoozing! We work on our bond from day one. The top three things I do to make sure a new dog is happy in my care are…..
1) take my time, especially during the meet and greet, I don’t rush the interaction between me and your dog but observe their behaviour with you and I can then tell how they behave when they’re happy and encourage that with every walk with me - I want your dog to be happy too
2) have fun, keep it fast paced, this keeps their engagement on me and create walks that also stimulate their minds
3) Treats, I ask them to do simple commands I know they can do which only strengthens the bond and in turn develops lovely recall as they are rewarded with high value treats.
