** Ivan and Diego are now reserved **

😻 Elsie's kittens 😍

We are now 7 weeks old! We will not be ready to leave until 20/09/2024, but the humans said they are starting to take applications for us as they have to do a "home visit"? Whatever that is.

We were handreared from a few days old as our kitty mammy had to go into hospital. It was difficult for us to get used to a bottle at first, but we got there. We had a couple of worrying moments, which I'm sure you saw on previous posts about us, but I'm sure you've also seen our fun videos!

We are happy, healthy, mischievous kittens now. We love to bounce about and play, but we also love to be snuggled by our human.

The human named us Grey, Ivan Drago and Diego. She said something about Ivan Drago beating her up when he was a baby being bottle fed.

Ivan and Diego look similar from the front but Ivan is like a stripey tiger on the back and has a little black spot on his nose, Diego has more black on his back and a big white spot.

We all use the litter tray and have had no accidents, we're so clever and learned really quickly!

The human said we leave microchipped and treated to prevent fleas and worms???

She said we must be neutered when we come of age??? I don't know what all this nonsense means, but she said you all needed to know.

Anyways, if you want to welcome some crazy fun into your home, get your application in!

(P.s. we can only be rehomed in pairs or to homes with a resident cat, no single kittens or we get bitey and scratchy naughty single kitten syndrome)

πŸˆβ€β¬› Tiggy update πŸˆβ€β¬›
Our older girl who was left in a garden to fend for herself had some bloods done last week. These showed issues with her thyroid and elevated liver levels. The liver levels may be linked to her thyroid.

She has started medication for both issues and will be re-tested in 4 weeks.

Hopefully, we will then be able to book her in for her much needed dental to sort out her mouth. We are starting her on yumove for her joint pain until we can stabilise her liver levels. Then, we will discuss pain medication.

Meanwhile, she's getting all the love she requires (she does this on her own terms) in her wonderful foster home. She's a very chatty girl and enjoys a head bump on occasion.

🐱 Ginge's babies 🐱

They are now around 8/9 weeks old (all female). They will need another week in their foster home and then will be ready to rehome, ideally in pairs (we have a home already for the fifth kitten).

They will need to continue being handled, played with etc to keep bringing them on. They are lovely kittens, just a bit shy.

They will leave us microchipped and treated to prevent fleas and worms.

When they are of age, they must be neutered.

🌟 Oscar and Sky 🌟

They are both 1 year old.
They would love a home together.

They are very shy to begin with and will need time and patience to adjust. They are a lovely pair once given time to settle. They love their strokes. They will benefit from a calmer home. They would not cope in a very busy home or a home with younger active children.

They are neutered, microchipped and treated to prevent fleas and worms.

❀️ Callie and Mark 🩡

These youngsters are still looking for their forever homes, their siblings have all found new homes, and they remain waiting and hoping!

A quieter home would suit these babies with someone willing to continue their socialisation. They have progressed so much since they arrived with us.

They could live with another sociable cat (and this often helps them).

CALLIE - the most confident, she loves cuddles and fuss. Very playful, with some impressive acrobatic jumping on her.

MARK - confident and playful boy, not particularly cuddly, but will enjoy some nice strokes and fuss.

Please fill out an adoption form to register your interest!

* Just as a reminder: we do have a kitten policy and will not rehome single young kittens. We will only rehome in pairs or to a home with an active cat.

πŸˆβ€β¬› BIFFA & AYLA πŸˆβ€β¬›

This cheeky pair are ready to start new adventures.
Biffa was found in a bin in a local council depot. Just around the corner, a few days later, Ayla was found in a work yard.
Now buddied up, they have come on leaps and bounds in foster. They love watching the resident cats and are in foster with 4 cat savvy dogs.

They will need a home committed to handling and interacting with them daily to continue their socialisation.
They can live with other cats, cat savvy dogs and children old enough to handle them confidently.

They must be neutered when old enough, provided one of our partnered vets is used, this is covered by the adoption fee.
They leave us microchipped and treated to prevent fleas and worms.

😻 Zola and Ash 😻

Zola is 9 weeks old and Ash is suspected to be around the same age. They are not siblings but have been together for a good few weeks now. We would like the find them a home together.

Here is how their fosterer describes them:

Zola is very cuddly/people orientated but also loves to play and is a proper little firecracker.

Ash is very sweet, a little more reserved around people but very playful and just lovely.

They leave us microchipped and treated to prevent fleas and worms.

Once they come of age, they must be neutered. If our partnered vets are used, the adoption fee covers the neutering.

We have had another devastating day.
It is so SO hard doing this charity work sometimes and we can't help but question why the world is so unfair.

Esmay has sadly left us today.
She had so much love and care from her fosterer Linda whilst she was with us.

Linda had noticed she wasn't really eating and she has been struggling to gain weight.

This morning, Esmay had an x-ray and it showed that at some point in history she had suffered a traumatic injury to her hip, injuries similar to a car accident. The damage this had done had put her hip in a position that was impacting her waste flow. We cannot fathom how an injury like that could go unnoticed and why she never got treatment.

You are not suffering any longer beautiful girl, we are glad we got the message to help you, we are sorry we couldn't do more for you.

Sleep well Esmay ❀️

If you are a cat owner or want to get a cat, you must not let your cat outside until they have been neutered. Here’s what you need to know about cat pregnancies and why your cat should be kept indoors until they are neutered.

Bob had his operation yesterday and is recovering well!

His 2 little friends were removed, and he ended up having 11 teeth removed 😱

He possibly has a new home waiting for him too, one that will give him the space he needs and the love he wants. We're so pleased he has his happy ending 😻

The Gofund me page is still open for Bob, any remaining funds will go towards the other cats in our care who need treatment!

This week we got the report from the cardiologist.
While we were aware of Sarah's congenital hole in the heart, it appears she also has pulmonary hypertension.

Her fosterer has reported she tires very quickly and this is a sign of the hypertension.

We have come up with a plan alongside our wonderful vets at Coquet Vets.
She will start a medication and be monitored very closely by her fosterer. In a few months time, she will be re scanned.

Her long-term prognosis isn't what we had hoped. However, while she is happy and is leading a pain-free life, we will do what we can for her.

Initially, we had hoped she could be rehomed with her siblings, but after discussions with her foster carer, it's been agreed she will remain there on a permanent foster basis.

We can't thank Emily enough for taking Sarah under her wing ❀️

Our old lady Tiggy visited the vets for a health check on Monday.
We have discovered she's likely to have arthritis in her hips and she also needs a dental.
The vets took bloods so we can see how everything else is functioning. We can then put a plan in place for her treatment.

She is currently getting plenty of love in her foster home. Although she's an older girl, she definitely has spirit.

We are aware that sometimes when you share our posts Facebook is removing them as a "scam". We contacted Facebook with regards to thie and their advice was to appeal the decision and say they have misunderstood the post.

I questioned why this was happening and if it was certain wording being used etc, the Facebook person said "we cannot give you technical advice like that" πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

We have seen others mention that it seems to be to do with sharing posts that have a link on, most of ours do anyways with the adopt link. We really hope this doesn't put people off supporting us and sharing our posts. Hopefully, technology such as Meta will soon start to realise we are not spam πŸ™„

The beautiful Polly is a young, sweet, affectionate lady.
She loves attention and enjoys to play.

The poor thing came in with a flea allergy, she has been treated and will need to be made sure this is kept on top of.

We are currently unsure of her neuter status. She did not come in pregnant and has not shown any signs of being in heat, we are continuing to monitor, but it is likely she is neutered.

She is microchipped.

ESMAY

This beautiful girl was brought to our attention on social media. Followed by a phone call the next day from her finder.

They had done the right thing and taken her to a vet to be scanned. She was chipped, the vets got no response from the telephone number and the finders were told to put her back out.

However, she refused to leave the garden and her finder was concerned for her welfare.

We sent a volunteer to scan her and we called at the registered address. We were told her owner had died a month or so ago.

She was very underweight (weighing just 2.3kg) with hair loss and a clear flea issue. Due to this, we decided to bring her into our care and had a wonderful emergency fosterer step up for her. She has now served her 7 days.

We ran bloods as we had some concerns. These showed severe anaemia and a parasitic burden. She has been treated for this.

Despite being 12 years old, the rest of her blood work was pretty good! She has now been flea and worm treated. Her appetite has come back.

She is such a sweetheart and loves affection from her human. She enjoys the easy life and is looking for a window to watch the world go by, and a lap to snuggle up on.

We are now looking for a permanent home for Esmay to enjoy her senior years in.

❓️ Why do all animal charities advocate for and stress the importance of neutering ❓️

We'll start firstly by bringing awareness to how overrun charities are with unwanted and abandoned cats. Absolutely overrun. Charities are having to turn people away because there simply is no room left for any more cats. This is absolutely heartbreaking, but the reality we are facing.

On top of all of these domesticated cats, we are becoming overrun with feral cats too.

Just to put a little perspective on the situation, we are aware of a feral colony living behind a singular residency. There are just over 30 cats in this colony that have been spotted so far. If half of that colony are female (15 females), then within roughly 9 weeks up to 105 kittens could be born. That colony now has over 135 cats. Roughly 4-5 months later, they all have another litter and that colony is now 240. The first lot of kittens are now reaching an age where they can also reproduce ... I'm sure you are seeing the problem.

❓️ But what about the benefits for the actual cats ❓️

Let's quickly discuss the process. You will see certain words being thrown around for cat reproduction, we won't use those words here (we'd get into trouble with the social media bosses!)

So let's put it in a different way.
When a female cat comes into heat, it will not get wined and dined. There are no strolls along the beach. No candlelit dinners. There are no discussions about state kitty school or private kitty school. Every unneutered male cat within miles will come to find that female cat in heat. They all want to do what is wired into them. There is nothing nice, loving or kind about this situation. The male cats will fight and they will all try to force the female cat to mate.

Hopefully, we have made that awful reality quite clear.

Back to the benefits of neutering:

πŸ’— reduces the risks of womb infections.

πŸ’— stops those in heat behaviours.

πŸ’— reduces the risks of tumours and cancer (mammary, uterine and ovarian).

πŸ’— eliminates the risks of pregnancy/birthing complications.

πŸ’™ reduces the risk of them wandering for miles and miles to mate (this can lead to cats getting lost, getting knocked over etc).

πŸ’™ reduces the risk of fighting and contracting serious diseases such as FeLV and FIV.

πŸ’™ eliminates the risk of testicular cancer.

❓️ what are some of the concerns about neutering ❓️

Some think it causes animals to gain weight. Cats can roam less as they dont need to go out and mate, but there is a simple fix ... play with the cat, provide toys and feed a bit less or a specific neutered cat food.

Some believe it can have a negative impact on personality. Generally, male cats can become calmer as they don't have that testosterone coursing through their bodies. Same as females who no longer go into heat and have to follow their instincts. Many female kittens do not get to be kittens as they are pregnant as soon as they have their first season.

The operation can be painful. It can be ... a few days of discomfort to provide them with a better quality of life surely seems worth it? Most cats that we have seen in foster care being neutered have come around after their operation and you'd think they hadn't even been operated on!! A small minority can have complications afterwards, but veterinary care can swiftly resolve that.

A few weeks ago we were contacted by Karyn to help Bob. Although we didn't have space, we said we would help as soon as we could.
In the meantime we assessed him, scanned him for a chip and presumed he was going to need a fair bit of work. So Karyn set to work on a go fund me for his bills. Appreciating the charity is funded through donations, she wanted to help as much as possible ❀️
Yesterday Bob was assessed by our vets, and as suspected, he needs neutered, he needs a dental and has an ear infection and various other bits going on.
Next week he's booked to be fixed up. Karyn has kindly said any remaining funds can be used by the charity for other cats needing care.
August has been a very expensive month for us (more on that later). Every penny raised is so important to the cats in our care.

πŸˆβ€β¬› POSSIBLE ABANDONMENT πŸˆβ€β¬›

We believe this girl to be called Tiggy.
We've also been given information that she is 15 years old.
Sadly, we were called to say family members had left her in the garden after the relative was taken into care.
We have left a note at the address and after a week of no one returning to the property, we have taken her into our care.
She was in the Annitsford area. Family told neighbours they would return but after a week, their concerns grew for Tiggys welfare.
We will legally hold Tiggy until Monday 2nd September. If no one comes forward for her, we will ensure she has everything she needs in her older years. She was not microchipped.

Are you part of the Pets At Home Pet Club?

You can now nominate us as your chosen charity to receive support from Pets At Home.

Every time you spend money at Pets At Home, a percentage goes towards a charity of your choice! Once a quarter, that charity will receive a voucher to spend at Pets At Home. This would be a massive help for all the cats in our care!

It is really simple to do, too!

Log into your Pets At Home account, go to the "Manage Pets Club" section, choose your local store, and then search for Minnies Haven in the charity box and update!

🌟 Sarah 🌟 Bill 🌟 Percy 🌟

A few weeks ago, we agreed to take in three 8 week old kittens.

We immediately had them vet checked as we had some concerns about the female.

On their intake day, Sarah weighed a tiny 420g!!

In comparison, her brothers (Percy and Bill) were a healthy 650g and 670g.
Our vets diagnosed Sarah with a grade 4 heart murmur.

We wanted to give her a chance, monitor her for a few weeks, and then follow up with the vet.

Over the last 2 weeks, she has gained weight and is now 580g!

On Thursday, Sarah had an appointment with a cardiologist who confirmed the grade 4 murmur, and it's likely cause, a congenital hole in her heart.

Whilst we do not know the extent of Sarah's illness yet, we do know she has a zest for life and adores her 2 brothers.

The specialists are currently looking at the results from her appointment on Thursday. Once we have all the information back, we can start making plans for her future, but we know she wants to stay with her brothers.

A task and a half, considering we know how overlooked black cats can be 😨😨

We are looking to bring more foster carers on board for the cats coming into our care.

❓️ what is required to be a foster carer ❓️

A big ❀️ and patience. These cats could have been uprooted from homes they had been settled in for many years, they could have been out on the streets fending for themselves, they could be recovering from illness and very sadly they could come from a background of abuse. Their stories are all different and they all react differently. It can take a cat days, if not weeks, to come out from hiding. They could be reactive when they first arrive due to fear. They could also come in full of confidence and ready to pour their love onto you. We try our best to provide you with as much information and support as we can but the biggest ask if the have patience and a heart ready to give the best you can.

❓️ Will I be expected to provide anything ❓️
Just a spare room, patience, love and probably a lap. We will provide food, litter, any medical treatment etc.

❓️ But I have my own animals and children❓️
This can actually help in our assessment of animals! We ask that foster animals are kept in a separate room to resident animals, introductions to animals can take some time and we do aim to have animals rehomed as soon as we can. Please seek advice from Founder with regards to introductions to other animals. Many cats love getting attention from sensible children and for a lot of cats we fully encourage them. We have seen very shy and nervous cats comes out to a child reading a book to them!

❓️ Do I need to have a car ❓️
It is very beneficial if you have a car or have access to a car as you may need to collect supplies or transport your foster to be neutered etc. If you do not, please still get in touch and this can be dicussed.

❓️ How long would a foster be with me? What if I have a holiday ❓️
We wish there was a straightforward answer but some animals are rehomed really quickly and some take a bit longer. If you have a holiday, please give as much notice as possible and we can relocate the foster cat whilst you are away.

❓️ Is there anything else I should consider before applying to be a foster carer ❓️
Yes, animals can be unpredictable and whilst we try our best to assess cats before putting them into foster homes, a cat could become distressed and there is a possibility of being scratched or bitten. During play time a cat can accidentally scratch. A kitten can mouth when teething. These are things that must be taken into consideration, the chances are small but they are there as with any animal.
Cats can scratch furniture, carpet and walls. Cats can have accidents outside of litter trays. Cats can cough up a furball or trail food about the floor.
Windows must remain shut or on a latch so cats cannot escape, they can push through the slightest gap. Doors should be monitored for escape antics. Cats are adventurous, it is in their nature to explore and they will take any opportunity to do so. Foster cats must remain indoors at all times.

❓️ After all that, what are the selling points ❓️
You can be that person to make a difference to that cat's life. You can be the person to remind that cat of its worth. You can provide the love and safe shelter to a cat at its time in need. Cats have such quirky individual personalities and you get to experience that first hand. You get snuggles or dirty side eyes, play or a how dare you throw that string at me, oooo that stroke feels good or imma tear your eyes out for stroking my tummy.

🐱 We believe this is one of the most rewarding volunteer roles, the difference you can make to these majestic animals during their time of need 🐱
