New Specialist staffed referral exotics facility opening in 2024

Meet our most important member of the team - Dobby! He has been a regular greeting clients since he was rescued 3 years ago as a tiny pup with a broken leg, a truckload of fleas and looking like a skeleton. He's made a full recovery and is a speedy and enthusiastic receptionist, if a little bouncy. Despite his sighthound genes he missed the memo that he's meant to be a ruthless hunter and is the gentlest dog with all animals, regularly being bullied by our resident cats, rabbits and chickens!

Egg-citing times! Twenty of our turkey eggs in the incubator are fertile and have developing embryos.
Candling the eggs (by shining a bright light through the shell) shows up a tiny week old embryo and a developing network of blood vessels. We'll be closely monitoring these develop 🐣

A little surprise from a ferret who came to visit with disorientation and wobbliness. Turns out he had some little hitchhikers down his ears making him very uncomfortable! Treatment of the mites solved his problems

Happy Easter! The cows are back out, the bunnies are enjoying the sun, the chicks are getting bigger and braver and we have an incubator full of turkey eggs that we'll check for fertility next week🤞🏻

As well as equipping the clinic, we're getting the farm set up too! So this weekend we had a new (well to us!) tractor arrive. This will definitely make clearing barns and managing the fields much less time consuming and exhausting. A big thank you to Hinstock Machinery Ltd for patiently helping us, answering all our questions and for delivering the tractor, couldn't have had a better service!

The newest addition to the farm, a very handsome stag to join the turkey flock. He arrived on Thursday and we have today had our first egg from the girls, hoping we hear the patter of little turkey feet later in the year 🤞🏻🦃🐣🐥

As well as being a vet practice, we are a small but busy farm!
We've accepted defeat to the relentlessly awful weather and the turkeys are very happy to be back inside until the swamp dries up. Hopefully they will have a little surprise to keep them busy later this week, we'll keep you updated....
The chickens however are very pleased with the wet weather and are making themselves useful clearing slugs from the puddles on the vegetable patch.

Our director and lead vet, Marie, has been awarded the Diploma of the American College of Exotic Pet Medicine. This is in recognition of her years of experience working with exotic animals, writing of scientific papers and textbooks and training of veterinary surgeons and students both nationally and internationally.
This is in addition to her RCVS Diploma in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine which gained her the recognition as a Specialist across all fields of exotic animal medicine nearly a decade ago.

Well all the hoops have been jumped through and building work is set to start in March, with the plan to be finished in August 🤞🏻 Exciting times!!

11:45-12:30 Stasis: causes, pathophysiology and clinical approach

12:30-13:00 Buffet lunch

13:00-14:30 Surgery: including dental/aural abscesses, liver lobe torsion and intestinal obstruction

14:30-15:30 Dental pathology: general approach and advanced techniques

15:30-16:00 Open session and case discussions led by attendees

We are very excited to announce the next CPD event on 26th January.

Richard Saunders, RCVS Specialist in Zoo Medicine and RWAF Vet Advisor will be joining us for "Rabbit medicine and surgery from the basics to the advanced".

This in person day course will cover rabbit medicine and surgery, from routine neutering and vaccination through to more advanced techniques in dental work and working up complex medical cases

Gastrointestinal stasis and chronic medical conditions such as renal disease and osteoarthritis are common presentations in general practice and the management of these will be covered in more detail.

More advanced surgical techniques such as management of auricular and dental abscesses, and treatment of acute surgical conditions such as liver lobe torsion and small intestinal obstructions will also be covered.
