Advocate for your dog. I’m so sad Georgia Trails For Tails Dog Training is going thru this with Sid. Listen to her story if you haven’t already. Absolutely no vet bashing as they have an incredibly hard job but our pets have no voice unless we advocate for them. Post beautifully written and shared from Connected Canines thank you 🐾❤️🐾
A heartfelt reminder to us all 💔
As some of you will have seen, I recently shared Georgia’s very distressing post about her lovely dog, Sid, and his ongoing battle with severe ear problems. It’s been — and will continue to be — a traumatic journey for them both for the coming months.
The current plan is for Sid to undergo surgery to clear the extensive scar tissue and build-up in his ear. This will sadly leave him deaf on that side, but the hope is that he’ll finally be pain-free.
What makes this situation so heart breaking is that it was entirely preventable. Georgia took Sid to the vets four times with sore, infected ears. Each time, she was sent away with cleaners and medication — yet despite her repeated requests, no swab was taken and no referral gained to a dermatologist until the fourth visit, several months later. Only then did they identify the real issue. Had these steps been taken earlier, the right treatment could have been prescribed, and all this suffering might have been avoided.
It’s also worrying to hear that referrals to dermatology specialists for dogs take much longer than referrals to other types of specialists. Why is that?
This post isn’t about criticising vets — far from it. Many do an incredible job. But it is a plea for all of us, professionals and owners alike, to be proactive advocates for our dogs. If something doesn’t feel right, ask questions. Push for tests. Trust your instincts.
I can’t imagine the pain and worry Georgia and Sid are going through — and I would hate for anyone else to have to endure something that could so easily have been prevented. ❤️🐾
