Ketosis in dairy cattle 🐄

Ketosis is a metabolic disorder that occurs when energy demands exceed energy intake, which can happen when a cow is at peak lactation (producing a lot of milk) or is not eating enough food. This results in molecules called ketones accumulating in the blood which causes the cow to feel lethargic, stop eating, and loose weight, and can be very dangerous when left untreated.

After we found high ketones in this cows blood, we treated her with oral glucose (propylene glycol) as well as glucose into her vein since the ketosis was more severe. This immediately spikes her blood glucose levels to provide an immediate energy source to reverse her energy imbalance. She is now doing well and back to eating normally

Here our vets and students are helping Jason the foot trimmer sedate a bull for a diagnostic foot trim

This very large boy had been lame for a few days and had to be sedated to lie on the ground for our safety. After a bit of searching we found a stone lodged in his toe that was the cause of the pain, and once removed he is feeling much better and is back to normal

Rumen sampling!

Last week the students helped us perform rumen sampling on a nearby dairy farm

From our rumen sample we used multiple methods to assess the health of the live gut flora, which will in turn have an impact on how well the cow can digest her food. This is a really useful tool to monitor how healthy our herd is.

As well as smell, colour, pH, we assessed the presence of healthy protozoa, which help the cow (and us!) absorb nutrients and maintain a good immune system - in the video you can see the protozoa whizzing about under the microscope, which is a very promising sign!

warnings are in place.

A reminder that flood water can carry & spread virus🦠

Minimise contamination to your bird areas by:

• preventing your birds accessing standing waters
• thoroughly cleansing & disinfecting hard standing areas once the water subsides
• inspect buildings & poultry enclosures & repair any damage that could result in wild bird or water ingress.

Lungworm 🪱

Here we have a live lungworm larvae wriggling under the microscope. A Baermann test was performed on a poo sample taken from a group of cows that we suspected had the infection

Lungworm can cause coughing and weight loss in cattle, and is often spread when sheep graze on contaminated pasture

Please contact the practice for more info on diagnosis and treatment

Here we have Gabe removing a toe granuloma in a ram

These lesions start off small and grow slowly but they can become very painful for the sheep, and may be a sign of over trimming of the foot or caused by chronic irritation.

Although there are several treatment options, in this case surgical removal of the granuloma was the best option and the ram has since made a good recovery

Further cases of BTV3 has been confirmed in Norfolk and Suffolk in both cattle and sheep.

Due to evidence of local transmission, the existing TCZ has been revoked and a Restricted Zone has been put in place around the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk. Keepers of cattle, sheep, camelids and other ruminants must remain vigilant and follow the restrictions on animal and germinal product movements that apply.

On occasion we get the weird and wonderful!

This wether presented as a little thin and off his food, however when we examined him we could feel a strange firm object in his abdomen. We decided to perform an exploratory laparotomy, and we found that his entire rumen was taken up with a firm knotted mass of what we suppose is rope

Often sheep are too clever to eat foreign objects, but this boy had eaten so much rope that he was unable to fit any food in his stomach!

He is thankfully feeling much better, is gaining weight and getting back to his normal self

Please be mindful of any objects in the field that your animals may get a hold of - bailer twine, plastic bags, and paper are common foreign bodies

This Hereford cow is a proud mum of triplets! This is a pleasant suprise as it is very rare in cattle

Here we have our vet Niall treating a teat laceration in a dairy cow

Teat lesions should always be treated as soon as possible and with care, especially if the cow is currently milking. If the injury is very recent it is possible to perform local anaesthetic and stitch up the wound, however good restraint is recommended - in this case we're using our fancy foot trimming crush to aid us!
