🌟 Vet Nurse Awareness Month 🌟

Meet our nurses - Georgia is a third year student studying towards her Bachelors degree in Veterinary Nursing at Harper Adams university and will qualify next year. Her favourite part of nursing is inpatient care and she has a strong interest in medical nursing and critical care.

Outside of work Georgia enjoys reading and running. She has a Patterdale terrier called Misty who keeps her very busy when she’s at home.

🌟 Vet Nurse Awareness Month 🌟 - Meet our nurse Fran.

“Since leaving school I have always wanted to work with animals but was never sure exactly what I wanted to do. I have been a pet shop assistant, a dog walker, a groom, a zookeeper and various other roles. These various jobs took me all over the UK and I was lucky to be able to work alongside so many incredible creatures. However, although I loved working with animals, I hadn’t yet found a career that I felt just as passionate about.

Until a friend suggested that I looked into vet nursing. As I was in my late 20’s I wasn’t keen on going back to university, but I found out that I could study for a diploma instead whilst also working full-time.

I found a role as a patient care assistant and after a year was given a student placement. It was challenging at times, studying whilst also working full time, but I knew that veterinary nursing was what I needed to be doing. I qualified from Myerscough college in 2018

I was so proud when I got my badge and could call myself a registered veterinary nurse.

Since qualifying I have worked in busy hospitals and charity practices where I really enjoyed the thrill of emergency and critical care nursing. I also discovered that I had a passion for anaesethsia and nurse procedures.

Most days at Acorn I can be found nursing patients that have come in for various procedures. I will prepare their drugs, take blood samples, place IV’s, monitor them closely throughout and ensure they are comfortable and pain free in recovery. I also carry out regular clinical audits reviewing subjects including our pain relief protocols and post operative infection rates. These audits allow the team to ensure we are doing the best for our patients and make changes as needed.

What I love about being an RVN is that I continue to learn something new almost every day. There are so many different roles that VN’s can diversify into.

I am planning on starting a surgical certificate to further develop my skills with nurse procedures and supporting patients during surgery”

🌟 Vet Nurse Awareness Month 🌟
Meet our nurses - Chris joined team Acorn in 2020 and is currently a student veterinary nurse. He spent many years working in project management for a software company before deciding to retrain. Chris has said “making a career change was the scariest but best decision I’ve ever made and this is the most fulfilling job I’ve ever had”.

His favourite area of practice is all things surgery! He loves scrubbing in to assist the vets in surgery - particularly our laparoscopic spays. Chris is also our fire marshall and well-being champion - he makes an excellent cup of tea and always has an ear to lend.

Outside of work Chris enjoys playing video games, visiting stately homes and gardens and adores exploring new places.

Chris has a cat called Pip who he rescued from cats protection, who we work alongside of.

🌟 Vet Nurse Awareness Month 🌟
Meet our nurses - Esther qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2019 and has since completed a certificate in nutrition, one of her favourite areas of nursing! Esther is definitely a cat person and loves all things cats, she also has a keen interest in senior pet and arthritis management alongside nurse consults. She also spends a lot of time in our pharmacy dispensing medications and managing stock. She’s one of our clinical coaches in practice which means she trains our student nurses.

Outside of work Esther enjoys keeping active and regularly goes to the gym and even attends a pole fitness class. She also enjoys reading, crafts and cooking or baking new gluten free foods.

She has 2 cats, Gizmo and Pip. Gizmo who she rehomed from her work experience and Pip who she has rescued from cats protection who we work alongside.

Here at Acorn we work closely with the North Wirral Cats Protection branch - a charity close to all of our hearts! This is why in the month of April we have decided to try and raise money and awareness for the fantastic work they do!
One of the main things we do alongside Cats protection is fit for rehoming checks with cats that have been taken into their care and for local stray populations and in the past 12 months we have neutered over 80 cats through this scheme.
At Acorn we also have fallen in love with a lot of the cats that have come through the clinic with Cats Protection, and past and present members of the team have fostered or adopted over 23 cats between us!
This is the story of Dora. We estimated Dora was around 18 months old when she was brought in as part of the trap and neuter program run by Cats Protection for colonies of stray cats with an increasing population to reduce unwanted breeding. It was noted that Dora may have had some health conditions as she was usually seen in the area she was from moving in diagonal lines when walking. Once Dora was brought into clinic, the team performed a full clinical exam, and it was noted that she was fully blind. Cats protection worked with the team in ruling out infectious causes for her blindness and it was concluded that it was likely a congenital problem (something she was born with). While Dora was in the clinic at Acorn, Head nurse Rachael fell in love with her sweet nature. As she was unable to see Dora was very timid, but over a short space of time she also became trusting of Rachael, and they formed a real bond.
At home Rachael already had a dog and another cat adopted through Cats Protection so it was really important for Dora to be introduced correctly into the home to ensure that there was no additional stress for any of the family and to ensure a successful transition into the household. She has now been happily living with Rachael and her two fur brothers for nearly two years. The first photo is when Rach first met Dora vs her now living her best life in the second photo!
