Gavrelle Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France – the last resting place of Fusilier Joe Conlon. His headstone is the middle of five white headstones just to the right of the green & white sign. The local residents in Gavrelle, near Calais, gave exact dates of the seven British soldiers who died in their village. Two (Fusiliers Joe Conlon and Joe McCutcheon) died on 18 May 1940. Four died on 22 May. One died on 23 May.
The locals affirmed that Joe died on 18 May 1940, and that is the date which appears on his headstone in the Gavrelle Communal Graveyard. The locals buried the soldiers at night, in their own graveyard.
