You don't have to ride your horse. It's ok if you don't ride your horse. It is not a requirement of horse ownership that you RIDE your horse.

I often hear people talk -
"(name) NEVER rides his/her horse! I don't know why (name) bothers having a horse, why does (name) spend all that money on board, and farrier, and veterinarian, and vaccinations and NEVER ride their horse? What a waste of money!"

First of all, it's none of their business what (name) does with his/her horse and his/her money. None.

Secondly, so what? Who care's?? If the horse is happy and well taken care of, then it's all good. I promise you that the horse is not standing in it's pen/pasture/stall saying to itself "Oh I wish (name) would come ride me!". or "Oh goody, here comes (name) to take me for a gallop around the barrels". Horses don't function like that. Horses look for and require food, water, shelter and companionship. Being ridden is not on their list of daily requirements for survival.

To be honest, I have a lot of respect for people who don't ride their horses, but are still willing to spend the necessary money, time and effort it takes to be a conscientious horse owner.

Maybe (name) has good reason not to ride, perhaps they have physical limitations, or too many demands on their time, or perhaps they just don't want to ride. Perhaps they struggle with their confidence and prefer groundwork, perhaps they don't like to ride or work with their horse when no one else is around. Perhaps they really just like to own a horse and derive as much enjoyment just being a horse owner, providing a good life for a horse they love and want to support, for as long as they can.

Perhaps we should not judge what people do with their horses, (or don't do), as long as those horses are well taken care of.

So next time someone says to you that they own a horse, but they don't ride, don't give them that stare of disbelief, don't put them down or make snide remarks. Instead, praise them for being a dedicated horse owner, for being willing to do what is necessary for a horse to have a good life, for being a good person, regardless of what they do, or don't do, with their horse.

Horses need good people, not all good horse people ride.

A common question to the Dengie Feedline is "𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙨𝙤𝙤𝙣 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙄 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧’𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙮 𝙤𝙧 𝙝𝙖𝙮𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙚?"

When it comes to this year’s hay once it is baled and stored the answer is you can introduce it straight away as long as there is no heating in the bales. Do bear in mind that the nutritional value of the hay will be greatest just after harvest, nutrients such as vitamins will decline over time.

When it comes to haylage it is a bit longer – usually around 6 weeks or longer. This is because it takes time for the fermentation process to take place which then ensures it is properly conserved.

Whichever forage you use and whenever you choose to introduce it the key advice is to remember that any change between batches of forage constitutes a dietary change and should be done gradually over the period of a couple of weeks by ideally mixing old and new forage together.

🔥🔥🔥 Feature Friday🔥🔥🔥

This week we are again focusing on a condition. EMS is one of the most common conditions I advise on.

🐴🐴 So what is EMS? 🐴🐴

EMS is caused when fat cells or adipose tissue produce high levels of adipokines, a protein hormone that leads to an increase in cortisol. As a result of the abnormal hormone production, a horse's normal response to the hormone insulin is disrupted, resulting in high insulin and glucose blood concentrations. The horse cannot properly metabolize carbohydrates, including starches and sugars. This mechanism can trigger the onset of laminitis.

EMS has some similar signs to Equine Cushings Disease, but it is a different disease with different underlying causes. There is however suspected correlation between horses that suffer with EMS and them going on to develop cushings.

Equine Metabolic Syndrome is usually first recognized when chronic recurrent laminitis is seen in fat horses that lack other laminitis triggers. With this being the case it is IMPERATIVE the diet is low in calorie and in sugar and the horse looses weight.

With careful management and feeding horses with EMS can carry on to lead active and 'normal' lives.

With the current uncertain weather how many of you are on laminitis watch?

Are you always having to watch how much you are feeding? What time of day to turn out?

Why do we carefully manage turnout? The answer is simple, to limit the level of fructans (fructose chain molecules) the horse ingests. These fructans are regularly high in the cooler weather, spring and autumn.

Note that turning horses out to graze for a short time may not be an effective strategy for controlling sugar/starch and energy intake, as in research ponies limited to 3 hours grazing soon learned to eat a lot more grass than normal in that period!

Eating a small amount of short, exposed to the sun, stressed and therefore high sugar grass can have the same results as eating a lot more long, shaded, non-stressed and therefore lower sugar grass - "lush" does not necessarily mean more dangerous, and this is probably why some horses seem to get laminitis when on little more than a mud patch.
