Tomorrow marks 25 years of starting Dunscombe Forge Farriers and I think you'll agree Graham doesn't look a day older! 😉
From the start Graham wanted to make Dunscombe Forge a truly personal, friendly, reliable farriery business and has always gone out of his way to help his clients...some of which have been with him since the start.
So Congratulations Graham for an amazing business and here's to maybe not 25 more years, but there's definitely life in the old man yet!

We have been shoeing for Dartmoor Hawking Recycled Racehorse Falconry Team for a few years now and would highly recommend their business if you are looking for a great gift or hawking experience for yourself and family. It really is such a privilege to be close to these gorgeous birds and a great local business to support. The horses are well shod too! 😉

🎄CHRISTMAS HOURS🎄

As always over Christmas Graham has a well earned break! Last day of shoeing is Friday 22nd December 2023 and he will be back on Tuesday 2nd January 2024!

If you need any Fiskes or have any problems before the 22nd Dec, please give Graham a call.

Over the holiday period if you have an emergency, your first port of call should always be the Vet, but Graham will be checking his messages occasionally.

Farriers are governed by strict regulations and because they have a hazardous job, they adhere to strict codes of conduct as well. This is important for their safety, the safety of the horse and the owner.

They will never walk away from a horse without good reason. But they always reserve the right to do so if the situation is hazardous.

Luckily, the majority of the horses and ponies Graham looks after are angels, but he will always let you know if he has to walk away from a shoeing. You can then work together to resolve the situation and make for successful appointments in the future.

Occasionally Graham is asked to help with trimming things other than horses! This poor cow was in desperate need of trimming so making sure it was well tied, Graham made it alot more comfortable. A great success!

Dunscombe Forge Honey from our own bees is ready and available to buy from Graham when he sees you.

This year it tastes of floral hedgerows and is the first time we have harvested Spring honey.

£7 for a full 1lb jar, please make sure that you order before your shoeing appointment so that Graham can bring it with him.

Hopefully there will be another crop later in the year too!

Yes we share this every year but it works and those pesky flies are all over everyone now!

This is the best horse flyspray recipe you will ever find. We used it on horses in Singapore and boy were there flies there!! It really works and we used it on our own horses and us when we used to ride. Don't be scared of the ingredients - try it!

In a 2ltr bottle (old coke one etc) put:
50ml Cintronella Oil (you can order 100ml bottles from the vet or online cheap)
1 teaspoon washing up liquid
4 tablespoons vinegar
1 tablespoon methylated spirits (don't worry!!)
1 cup very very strong cold black tea
2-3 fat cloves of garlic crushed

Fill up rest of the bottle with cold water and there you have it! Enjoy! (smells great too!)

Tomorrow (Friday 23rd) is the last day before we finish for the Christmas break.
Graham will keep an eye on any messages just in case of a genuine emergency (not a lost shoe!), but we will be closed until Tuesday 3rd January.

We would like to wish all our customers, hooved and footed, a very Happy Christmas and Happy Holidays and hope that you spend some great family time together.

Good news!! We have Fiskes back in stock and we have added to the range...Fiskes Grease.

Applied 3 to 4 times a week, Fisles Hoof Grease will soften a dry, cracked hoof and promote elasticity in the hoof wall.

We also have the favourite Fiskes skin and minor wound salve.

We are still awaiting delivery of the hoof balm, but why not try the Fiskes Grease as it can be easier to apply than the balm and has the same great results.

Don't take our word for it...ask those who use Fiskes already! Let us know below how it's helped your horse or pony.

Ask Graham on his next visit or message us to reserve a pot for when he is next with you.

You may have noticed that it's cold! A place to shoe your horse or pony out of the wind and snow/rain would be much appreciated and also dry clean hooves are always a winner!
Luckily Graham mostly keeps warm by working hard, but if a hot cuppa is offered he probably wouldn't say no! A bucket of hot water to wash his hands also helps! A rug on your horse whilst being shod (unless they are blessed with a great natural coat!) will keep them toastie as well! Stay warm!

Remember the foal from a few weeks ago that was lying quietly while Graham repaired a broken foot cuff? Wow look at it now, toe extensions removed and moving really well. A great result!

When you are dealing with horses nothing is predictable and the foal from yesterday managed to break an Imprint shoe. All part of the process though, but look what patience and time will do...no sedation and a very good 11 day old foal having a repair ❤️
