Let’s talk about Catfish!
No aquarium is complete without them, especially as they excel in keeping the substrate clear of algae and other debris. Yet there is a common misconception that these fish can thrive exclusively from the uneaten food of their tank mates (think flake food for example). Whilst these busy little cleaners help maintain cleaner water conditions, this is often at the detriment of their long-term health due to poor nutrition!
So, what do Catfish need?
Food that is going to reach the bottom of your aquarium quickly, so that their hungry tank mates aren’t able to hoover it up before it has a chance to reach the bottom. Furthermore, these foods hold their nutritional value for much longer - making it ideal for any catfish species.
How can we help?
Here at Newton Pet & Aquatics, we stock a wide variety of Catfish species, including Corydoras, Plecostomus, Loaches and Synodontis. To accommodate their dietary needs, we provide a great selection of dry, live, and frozen foods. Each species will prefer something a little different, some eat a lot more than others, some have rather small mouths and thus need smaller foods to consume, whilst others may prefer live/ frozen foods over dry foods.
Some catfish (such as Corydoras) like to be in small groups, were as others are best housed singularly long term. So, in addition to dietary needs, make sure to consider their social requirements as well!
