It is with great sadness that we share the news that Noel Evans passed away last week. Noel started work for the practice in the 1970s and worked for us for about 40 years. Noel was our farm animal blood tester. He visited all our cattle farmers annualy for many years, blood sampling cows for brucellosis, which is now pretty much eradicated from the UK. He also, later, blood sampled sheep as part of the scrapie eradication programme. Noel was incredibly skilful at his work and was always calm and quiet with the animals. He was enormously popular with all the farmers and they all repeatedly praised him to the partners in the practice. They were always pleased to see Noel because apart from his ability testing, he was always warm and friendly and a pleasure to spend time with. The vets and support staff also had a great respect and fondness of Noel as a hard working colleague for whom nothing was too much trouble. And he did all of this while still running his home family farm. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time, and all those who were lucky enough to work with, or just to know Noel, will be greatly saddened by this news.
RIP Noel, we were lucky to have had you as a colleague and friend.

Did you know?

Flood water can carry & spread virus🦠

Minimise contamination to your bird areas by:

• preventing your birds accessing standing waters
• thoroughly cleansing & disinfecting hard standing areas once the water subsides
• inspect buildings & poultry enclosures after the storm & repair any damage that could result in wild bird or water ingress.

Wild birds may move to different areas to avoid adverse weather. Make your premises unattractive to wild birds. Use bird scarers, foils or streamers.

On Monday last week one of our vets, George, and one of our nurses Megan, attended Aberystwyth University where they have been asked to sit on an advisory board to discuss the further development of Veterinary education at Aberystwyth University.

It is a real honour to be asked to be involved. At Hafren we pride ourselves on being an accredited training practice and we put a lot of time and effort into training the next generation of vets and nurses.

It is fantastic to see the evolution of a veterinary nursing and veterinary medicine training programme at Aberystwyth University.

🦠 Avian Influenza 🦠

Unfortunately a case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed on a poultry farm in Yorkshire.

This is the first case of the winter and the first case of H5N5. A new strain of HPAI that has been spreading across Europe. It has been found in wild birds previously in the UK but this is the first case in commercial poultry.

The current risk to human health is considered to be low.

We are encouraging all of our producers and owners of pet chickens to practice excellent biosecurity and ensure that their flock, whatever size, is registered with APHA.

If you have any concerns about Avian Influenza or would like to review your biosecurity please contact a member of our poultry team.

‼️Poultry and Other Captive Birds Compulsory Registration – change in CPH registration process‼️

On 1 October 2024, it became a legal requirement for all bird keepers in Wales to register as a bird/poultry keeper on the GB Poultry Register. This excludes keepers of pet birds without any outside access. This change will allow us to communicate with all bird keepers in Wales, in the event of an avian disease outbreak.

Time for bird keepers to prepare: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) risk levels increased
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N5 has been detected in a number of wild birds in Great Britain this autumn, including the first reported HPAI-related wild bird mass mortality of the season. In addition to the first detection of HPAI H5N1 in a wild bird this season.
The risk of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 in wild birds in Great Britain has increased from LOW (event is rare but does occur) to MEDIUM (event occurs regularly).
The risk of poultry exposure to HPAI H5 in Great Britain remains assessed as:
LOW (event is rare but does occur) (with high uncertainty) where there is suboptimal or poor biosecurity
VERY LOW (event is very rare but cannot be excluded) (with high uncertainty) where good biosecurity is consistently applied at all times
Whilst the UK does not currently have outbreaks of HPAI in poultry or other captive birds and the UK has World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) self-declared freedom from HPAI, keepers must remain vigilant and practice rigorous biosecurity to maintain this status and protect the health and welfare of their birds. Find advice on how to protect your birds in Defra’s biosecurity guidance.
