On 1 July, the Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (Wales) Order 2024 will be introduced to facilitate an industry-led approach to eradicating the disease.

🐮 Please be aware that a case of BSE has been confirmed in Scotland

🦠 BSE is more commonly known as mad cow disease, it is a neurodegenerative disease that is fatal to any infected cattle

👀 Symptoms to look out for include:
- Abnormal behaviour
- Trouble walking
- Weight loss
- Eventual paralysis

🌟 This is an isolated case that is being investigated thoroughly, but if you’re concerned about any of your own cattle please don’t hesitate to give us a call!

☀️ Spring is in full swing, and in classic British style it’s raining one minute and sunny and warm the next. This is the perfect weather for fly emergence!

🪰 Flystrike is caused by the invasion of fly larvae on animal tissue. It is painful and can even be fatal in all animal species but is most commonly found in rabbits and sheep

🪰 Flystrike can be caused by a number of flies, but is usually initiated by a greenbottle. They target animals with open wounds or a soiled fleece, laying their eggs in or around these areas. Once these flies have struck, the bluebottles and blackbottles will come in and lay eggs in the already damaged skin. Once the eggs hatch, the maggots eat away at the sheep skin and muscle causing more damage with the help of enzymes. The damaged tissues will then secrete toxins that pass into the sheep’s bloodstream and cause illness or even death. The smell of the damaged tissue attracts more flies, and the cycle repeats.

🐑 Flystrike is a serious welfare concern here in the UK, with 75% of sheep farms reporting cases of this every year

🪰 Symptoms of Flystrike include:
- Discoloured wool
- Isolation from the rest of the flock
- Disturbed grazing
- Tissue decay
- Kicking or nibbling at the affected area

💊 There are ways to help prevent it!
- Shearing your sheep
- Cleaning any soiled fleece
- Cleaning and treating open wounds
- Controlling parasites that cause diarrhoea to avoid attracting the flies
- Pour ons that reduce the risk of Flystrike
- Rapid disposal of carcasses

🐮 Sharing the load may not be the easiest thing to do, but carrying it all by yourself is even harder! Contact the DPJ foundation if you find yourself in mucky water, they have the resources to help!

🌟 This week has been veterinary receptionist awareness week!

🐱 Hiya! I’m Jordan, I’m one of the receptionists in our Newtown branch and often am the one posting on this small animals page!

⚙️ Our fabulous team of 15 full time and part time receptionists are an important cog in the machine that is Hafren vets, and I am so proud to be a member of the team!

📞 Whether you’re calling up for appointments, popping in for flea and wormer, or attending your appointments, we are often the first and last people that you and your pets see!

🐮 As a mixed practice with 4 branches all organised by our team of receptionists, we take pride in being able to communicate effectively with clients, organise appointments and home/farm visits, and help ensure that all of our vets are in the right place at the right time!

🐶 We do much more than just answer the phones and pet the dogs, although we do a lot of that! We act behind the scenes to ensure that the practices run smoothly and all of our clients, small animals, and farm animals are well taken care of!

❤️ Being a veterinary receptionist is a very fulfilling and heartwarming job that we all feel so lucky to do! Being a part of the team that helps to take care of your furry family members and hopefully help you feel a little bit better when you come to visit even in troubling times is a job worth its weight in gold!

🐶 An honourable mention to my handsome boy Charlie, who will make a brilliant receptionist one day I’m sure 🤣
