What a great way to wrap up our last outdoor session of the year with Lucy & Wren passing their UDT Bronze Award! These two started their training journey with our Spring Puppy Course and are now showing great potential with steadiness & consistent deliveries. Well done!!! 😁

A huge thank you goes to Nigel & Julie for kindly allowing us to train at their superb venue from the Spring until now. Thank you from all of us 🥰 x

As the days grow shorter & colder, we will be moving our training indoors. Running several workshops to improve & fine-tune specific tasks, tailored to each dogs level & ability. I am also hoping to meet those who are on our current waiting list too!🤞

What a fabulous session today for these two!!!

Congratulations to Ginny & Bunty for passing their UDT Bronze award - by working so hard to keep this little WCS calm & focused! Today they smashed it with a consistent delivery to hand, well done!

Stephanie & Niamh were amazing and passed their UDT Silver Award, this little dog has been gun shy and today she was totally on it & hunted for a Blind with shot. Well done!

We held our final UDT TRAINING DAY of the year today. With the threat of a dreadful forecast, seventeen handlers and their gundogs braved the weather which thankfully soon cleared.

Many thanks to our brilliant dummy throwers, Jen & Ginny for giving up their time to help.

The day started with a warm up for all dogs. heel and recalls. We then split into two groups and did a Mark in the field and another in the woodland. The groups moved onto a Blind in reeds without shot and a Mark & Memory in a different area of the woodland.

After a lunch break, a Hunting exercise was set amongst the hazel with shot and an Obedience exercise with walking off lead to a post towards the dummy thrower and their steadiness was tested with a throw and retrieve. This exercise was selected to be our competitive retrieve of the day with Nigel & Piper scoring full marks. Julie & Willow and Chris & Bosun were just one mark behind so were challenged further with a run off Mark in tall reeds. Both did brilliantly but Julies Flatcoat took the perfect line and second place!

Thank you to Gamekeepers Goods for your generosity by giving a 1st place voucher for our training days.

With the arrival of additional dummy throwers - thank you Karen, Sean, Laura & Nathan, our finale was a Mock Drive. We started in Walk Up formation for one group at a time, once settled the drive began with the addition of our fab air launcher. A little too exciting for some but there were some excellent retrieves especially Piper, Hattie, Shadow and Bono.

Today was fun and it has been such a pleasure to host these events throughout the summer. Well done to everyone, you & your dogs are awesome x

OLIVE UPDATE
17 months

Today marked Olives first day out of the season. It's a strange time as I'm always slightly nervous of the first day with a young dog - all that training, practice & patience stands behind being ready or not. I need not have worried, Olive behaved impeccably! Quietly sitting at my side taking it all in.

The first drive was close to the next one, so I kept her on a long-line, just incase she took off on a low flying bird. At the end of the drive, I cast her out, she took the line but wasn't sure what to do once she got there. A small encouragement, picked & delivered to hand!! So exciting!

By the afternoon, Olive was off lead & hunting like she'd done it all of her life, coming back in each time I recalled her & stopping on whistle if she got too far ahead . On our final drive she hunted across the stubble & brought me two to hand! Wow, what a fabulous start!!! 🖤

Yesterday, we set up some blind retrieves so that the dogs couldn't wind them easily & would therefore encourage them to work with their handlers to find the dummy, - using stop whistle & directional cues, as appropriate. Everyone did very well so we will be gradually increasing the distance for some, going forward.

Looking forward to the Isle Of Wight Dog Festival on Sunday 15th September - we will be talking you through the main principles of GUNDOG TRAINING, from basics to more complex retrieves. Our display team will be demonstrating each stage with their beautiful gundogs.

COME & WATCH US AT 1PM IN THE MAIN SHOW DOG RING!

We will be available for any questions after the demonstration.

OLIVE UPDATE
14 Months

We have had a fabulous month, Olive joined in on demos at our local County Show & The Game Fair at Blenheim Palace. She has been such a good girl, taking everything in her stride.

This is her fourth water retrieving outing, gradually increasing in confidence. A few more attempts & the paddle steamer should go, although it is rather cute!

Other work has included lots of heel work, fun games to keep recall active & we are now beginning a little obedience work by walking off lead towards & away from a fallen dummy. Sending her for it as a reward for doing a few things beforehand. I'm very mindful not to overdo this so she doesn't lose drive, we always finish off with a crazy bounce around, chucking a dummy out & her chasing me whilst she's carrying it!

Loving life with my Curly & Happy Gotcha Day! 🖤 x

ANNOUNCEMENT
We are pleased to announce that Julie Brewer will be working in association with us by assisting with new starters, enabling UDT B Kind methods to reach more people & their gundogs.

Julie is fully insured & is qualified in dog behaviour & psychology. She has a wealth of knowledge & has been working with dogs for many years as a Corporate Manager for Canine Partners & also running her own successful dog day care before she moved to the Island.

Current timetables will remain the same for Tuesdays, Thursdays & Training Days.

Wow, what an amazing weekend, so far!! It's been full of incredible surprises ❤️ I am so proud of our Display Team, dogs & handlers were brilliant! Same again tomorrow at 11.15am in the Dog Show Ring 😁🤩 Our Scurry was great fun too, we have 5 x names on the Leader Board from today - the last competitive run will be at 230pm tomorrow, so can they be beaten? The fastest of the weekend will receive their prizes, kindly sponsored by Gamekeepers Goods and Ci - really good dog food 1st, 2nd & 3rd will also be part of The Grand Parade at 3.20pm tomorrow - good luck everyone🤞

Such a lovely evening to be out with Fig after all that rain, gradually pushing her distance as she is now so much more confident 🖤

OLIVE UPDATE 13 months We are now on the other side of Olives first season and have turned a big corner with regards to focus, response & attention. She is doing so well, I'm asking a little more each week without drilling her. Today she successfully completed her first water retrieve, learning to swim only last week! Delivery is pretty consistent now, she's a little nosey when she picks so that's something to work on. She's an absolute peach around the house, so laid back & I'm totally smitten with her & that womble nose!! 🖤

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT Two weeks ago, Fig got a zero in a 5 dog Walk Up, she pulled forward & sat in front of me on each stop. So how would you train this out of your dog? Within a week, Fig gained 19.5/20 in her Walk Up. I was obviously elated but we worked hard on it! Firstly, why was she doing it, not to be disobedient, she wanted a vantage point so she didn't miss a mark! With that in mind, reinforcing the heel by walking towards a thrown dummy showed her what I required. We practised this every day, once she could maintain several perfect heel strides, she was rewarded by casting her for the retrieve. Result, no harsh handling, just patience & kindness! STOP - THINK - CHANGE - SUCCESS

OLIVE UPDATE 9 months old We have been working on Olives distance for memory retrieves, walking away from the mark to heel is coming on very well. She is confident across any terrain, covering the ground with her easy & fast stride! Looking forward to introducing her to swimming soon ...... The lure of the environment kicks in from time to time so I'm working on maintaining focus & keeping training fresh & fun. Her delivery is not as consistent as it was last month so we are practising in the house as well as doing recalls & playing touch games with a ball or dummy to stay connected when out & about. She's such a character, loves life & makes us all smile 😁

One of our ladies just sent this video of her lovely GSP, happily retrieving canvas (which she wasn't interested in until recently). Slowly getting steadier without losing her drive - well handled, Kath!
