How adorable is Merlin and his fangs 🧛

This sweet boy joined us for a dental procedure where he required multiple tooth extractions, luckily he got to keep his fangs! 🦷

Feline dental care is often overlooked, but is just as important as it is in dogs! 🪥

Today is national blind dog day 🐕

We are here to celebrate all the blind dogs who are leading happy and fulfilling lives even without the use of their sight!

There are many ways as an owner you can support your blind dog; including creating a safe space without hazards, not rearranging furniture and using sound based toys when playing. Your dog becoming blind can be scary, but with your support, dogs can still live their best lives 🥰

Today is international black cat appreciation day 🐈‍⬛

Black cats for a long time have been given a bad name, being associated with witch craft and bad luck! Still today, black cats are the least likely to get adopted 😢

This is JD, he was a stray for a long time and was being fed and cared for by his community; he even got Christmas presents left out for him on the holidays 🥰
He now lives with a lovely family and is still a local celebrity in the village.
JD was brought in to be castrated and captured the hearts of our staff with his adorable personality and back-story!

We love our black cats and hope that this stigma will soon be forgotten!

Let’s squash this myth 🔮

Dog breath isn’t always an ‘old dog thing’, which for many can be the assumed thing.

Just like us, cats and dogs can experience dental issues that require attention.

This , take a moment to assess your pet's breath. If it's less than pleasant, it could be a red flag for dental issues such as gum disease, plaque buildup, or tooth decay.

If you’ve noticed any new dental symptoms in your pet, contact us today.

Before and after 😧

Dental care is vital for species, these pictures show a before and after of rabbit tooth burring. Rabbits have continuously growing teeth and they can become overgrown. In this case the overgrown teeth has caused painful mouth ulcers.

There are ways of avoid this, including the correct diet and constant access to hay.

If you are concerned about your rabbit’s teeth, please contact the practice!

Sun safety ☀️

Does your pet have any bald patches, thin hair or bare ears? Don’t forget that sun safety applies to them too! ⛱

Here is Freddy, he is an older gentleman who has very thin fur on the tips of his ears, armpits and nose. He loves to sunbathe so his owner ensures he has suncream on those exposed areas.

We recommend using factor 50+ children’s suncream as it is safe for sensitive skin !

Suncream helps to prevent sunburn and skin cancers. Did you know, white cats are particularly susceptible to these forms of skin cancers? making the use of suncream on their ears and nose very important! 🧴

🦷 Did you know that plaque and tartar buildup can lead to serious dental issues in pets? Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, can accumulate on your pet's teeth within hours of eating. Over time, if not removed through regular brushing or professional cleanings, plaque hardens into tartar, which can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and other dental problems.

🔍 Signs of plaque and tartar buildup include bad breath, yellow or brown discolouration on the teeth, swollen or bleeding gums, difficulty eating or chewing, and very rarely changes in behaviour such as pawing at the mouth or reluctance to play with chew toys.

⚠️ If you notice any of these signs, it's essential to schedule a dental exam with your vet promptly. Early detection and treatment of dental issues can prevent pain, discomfort, and more severe health problems down the line.

Remember, prevention is key when it comes to dental health! By brushing your pet's teeth regularly, providing dental chews or toys, and scheduling annual dental check-ups, you can help prevent plaque and tartar buildup and ensure your pet's teeth and gums stay healthy for years to come.

Another victim of the pesky grass seeds 🌾😫

Poor little Peggy had 7 grass seeds all tracking up the same hole😧; they created a channel from her paw all the way to her tarsus (as seen in the last image).
Due to a grass seed’s shape, they are able to move throughout an animal’s body, sometimes even reaching internal organs. Once under the skin, grass seeds can quickly result in swelling, infection and pain!

Sedation or General Anaesthesia are often required for the removal of grass seeds. Remember to check your pet regularly for grass seeds, especially between the digits, and avoid long grass where possible.

Signs that your pet may have a grass seed include but are not limited to: licking of the affected paw, a swollen paw, shaking of the head, scratching ears, repeated sneezing, blood from the nose and general signs of discomfort.

The further the grass seed tracks into the body, the more damage is caused. If you suspect your pet could have a grass seed, contact your vet ASAP!

Can you guess the amount of grass seeds removed from a single dog ?🧐🌾

With grass seed season fully underway, be vigilant with your pets. Make sure to check your pets thoroughly after being outside! The main areas these pesky seeds like to hide include paws, ears, groin, armpits and even up the nose!

Avoid long grass where possible and clip any fluffy paws 🐾

If you believe your dog has a grass seed that has entered the skin, ears or nose, please contact your vet ASAP !

It is day seven of rabbit awareness week 🐰
Today we are discussing the importance of vaccination 💉
Vaccination is important to prevent serious fatal diseases.
Rabbits should be vaccinated against Myxomatosis and Rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease.
The main symptoms of Myxomatosis (also known as Myxie) are swellings around the face, causing blindness. Myxie can quickly become fatal, causing death after 10-14 days. Myxomatosis is spread via blood sucking insects as well as between rabbits including wild rabbits.
Rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease is a serious virus causing internal bleeding and liver failure. This disease is also spread via contact with other rabbits as well as blood sucking insects. This disease is almost always fatal.
Please book in with your vet practice to vaccinate your rabbits, and remember their annual boosters!

It is day six of rabbit awareness week 🐰
Today we are discussing companionship 👫
Rabbits are social creatures, it is best practice to keep them in pairs. The recommended pairing is a neutered male and neutered female. Neutering prevents mating and reduces the chance of fighting.
A companion makes rabbits feel safe to carry out their normal behaviours, you can have a cheeky dig if you have a friend on lookout duty!
Bonding rabbits can take time so be prepared that they may not be best friends straight away and ensure you have space so you can separate the rabbits if necessary.

It is day five of Rabbit awareness week 🐰
Today we are discussing enrichment!
Like all species of animal, rabbits require mental stimulation and can easily become bored. Boredom can lead to unwanted behaviours!
There are many things you can do to enrich your rabbits life including forage feeders, cardboard boxes, platforms, tunnels and toys!
Here we have Penelope enjoying a homemade enrichment toy. Courtesy of nurse Emily, this toy is simply made using a box of recycling and toilet roll tubes filled with hay and dried wildflowers! 🌼

It is day four of Rabbit awareness week 🐰
Today we are discussing housing size!
Gone are the days of rabbits being kept in small hutches, research shows that rabbits require spacious housing!
A minimum 3m x 2m footprint is in a single block of space is essential because it allows them to display positive behaviors, for example, to run rather than just hop, but go as big as you can!
A 1m minimum height allows rabbits to display their happy behaviors of jumping and binkying!
Ensure you have the available space before considering owning a rabbit!

It is day three of Rabbit awareness week 🐰
Today we are discussing dental care! 🦷
A rabbit’s teeth grow continuously, if they are not fed the correct diet or their teeth grow faster than normal, this can cause serious problems!
The best way to prevent overgrown teeth is by ensuing the rabbit can constant access to hay, chewing hay helps to wear down the teeth.
Some rabbits require their teeth to be shortened by a veterinary professional if they become too long!
Overgrown teeth can prevent the rabbit from eating and can cause painful mouth ulcers; as discussed yesterday, a rabbit that is not eating is an emergency!
If you have any questions about your rabbit’s dental care, please contact your veterinary practice !

It is day two of Rabbit awareness week 🐰
Today we are discussing gut stasis!
Gut stasis is one of the most common and most dangerous conditions that we see in rabbits!
Gut stasis occurs when gut motility slows or completely stops, this usually occurs as the rabbit has stopped eating. Rabbits should eat continuously throughout the day; if you notice your rabbit has stopped eating or defecting, call your vet practice immediately!
Gut stasis is an emergency and can quickly become fatal if not treated!
The best way to prevent gut stasis is by feeding a correct diet (see yesterdays post) and ensuring the teeth are a suitable length!

It is day one of Rabbit awareness week 🐰
Today we are discussing diet!
It is important that rabbits are fed the correct diet in order too prevent obesity and other serious health issues such as dental disease.
A rabbits diet should consist of 85-90% hay! It is important that your rabbit has constant access to hay as they should be eating continuously throughout the day! Eating hay helps to prevent overgrowth of teeth and also helps to keep their guts moving, preventing gut stasis!
The rest of a rabbits diet is made up of a small amount of pellets which provide added vitamins and minerals as well as appropriate fresh greens which add variety 🥬
Muesli should not be fed to rabbits as this encourages selective feeding where the rabbit will pick out the the tasty parts and leave the more nutritionally beneficial food.
Please contact us if you have any questions about feeding your rabbit!

22/06/2024

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of flystrike for our fluffy companions. Flystrike, a potentially fatal condition, occurs when flies lay eggs on a rabbit's fur, which then hatch into maggots and feed on their flesh.

🔍 Keep a close eye on your rabbit's hygiene and living environment, especially during warmer months. Regularly check for any signs of soiled fur, wounds, or unusual behaviour. Prevention is key: ensure your rabbit's living space is clean and dry, and consider using flystrike prevention methods recommended by your vet.

🚨 If you suspect flystrike, seek veterinary assistance immediately. Early detection and treatment are crucial for the well-being of your furry friend. Let's keep our rabbits safe and flystrike-free this summer! 🌞🐇

We had a baby corvid brought into us by a member of the public who suspected it had been clipped by a car. We tried to treat it for its injuries but sadly it didn’t make it.

Often the people who bring the wildlife to us, kindly leave us a small donation and this money goes directly into our wildlife fund, which allows us to help little guys like this. It does make a big difference to what we can do for them, so it is hugely appreciated. 😊

Please also note, that baby corvids spend their first few days on the ground, being fed by their mother, so if you see one which is grounded and can’t fly away, it doesn’t necessarily need help. Please do not approach it as it’s parent will be watching nearby.

Our nurses are practicing their suturing (on lemons of course!) lead by RVN Charlotte who has done a course in something called ‘Schedule 3 Procedures’. This allows registered nurses (RVNs) to carry out minor surgical procedures on patients. They did a brilliant job and Charlotte was a fabulous teacher 🤩
