Katrina's Happy Dogs

Katrina's Happy Dogs Positive dog trainer offering a fun and rewarding approach to improve the bond between owner and dog.
(14)

Back in 2016 I was working at a charity in Cyprus helping to rehome animals within the military community. From that moment on I knew that I wanted to work with animals. I continued to pursue my career and became a fully approved Instructor with the Academy of Dog Training and Behaviour. I assisted owners and their dogs on a 1-1 basis and I worked at a non-profit humane animal shelter based on th

e central coast of California. I worked alongside 2 other dog trainers and experienced first-hand, that science based positive reinforcement training works. With this approach, I saw the dogs flourish and be placed into wonderful new homes. I am a member of the National Institute of Canine Ethics and I avidly pursue ongoing education and professional development by attending seminars and keeping current on industry literature. I offer a fun and rewarding approach to training that will allow your pet to happily co-exist with you. When not helping clients, I like to explore new places and spend time with my husband plus our two rescue dogs Djin and Django."

I had the pleasure of meeting this handsome boy yesterday. This is Hunter and he is a young German shepherd that needs help with settling in the house, pulling on lead, barking when people go past and improving his recall.
Looking forward to seeing him next week

No is not part of my vocabulary when teaching owners how to train their dogs.

If you would like to learn more about how you can train your dog in a positive fun way, whilst increasing the bond between you then please reach out

🗣️ One common frustration voiced by puppy parents is the repetitive cycle of saying "no" to their biting puppy, only to find the behavior persisting despite being told “NO!” a thousand times.

🤔 It's not surprising, considering that "no" is not a behavior itself. When your puppy jumps, bites your hands, scratches you, and you suddenly utter "NO," your puppy doesn’t understand what you want. Do you want them to stop biting, scratching, jumping, or tugging at your clothes?

No doesn’t tell your puppy what you want them to do.

🐶 Puppies don't comprehend English by default. Words hold no meaning for them unless we associate specific actions with those words through training. To them, it's merely sound.

🚫 "No" doesn't provide your puppy with clear guidance on what you desire. They might be just as puzzled about your intentions as you are about why they "aren't listening."

⚠️ And, if you say "NO" while your puppy is jumping and biting, you might unintentionally reinforce the behavior. Your attention becomes a form of reward when you engage with them (remember, they don't understand the word "no"). Your instinctive movements to protect yourself by shifting your hands, feet, arms, and legs can inadvertently encourage the jumping and biting—creating a super fun game for puppies.

🔄 Instead of tirelessly repeating "no," redirect your puppy's attention to an appropriate toy or chew.

🗨️ "You can't chew on me, but you can chew on this."

Today at 11am I am ticking something off my bucket list. I haven't been abseiling since I was in my teens.
I will be going off the Northampton lift tower at 400ft high.

I am doing this for a great charity called Functional Neurological Disorder/FND Action.
My neighbour Emily was diagnosed at 15 years old, it has changed her life. She went from doing drama, dance, sports and more to using crutches and wheelchairs in less than a few weeks. In September 2021 she caught Covid, and less than a few weeks later she started blacking out and having seizures (non-epileptic seizures).

FND is not spoken about enough.
If anyone can donate to this worthy cause I would be so grateful.

Help Katrina Maylan raise money to support FND Action

Look at these two beauties. Say hi to Maisie and Teddy. Their owners reached out to me for some 1-1 help with reactivity to other dogs whilst out on a walk, to help build Maisie's confidence around children and other dogs and for them both to walk better on lead
They both are really sweet natured and I love seeing their confidence grow.
