🌞🐾 Warning: Hot Weather & Your Dog’s Safety 🐾🌞
As much as we love those summer walks, the heat can be really dangerous for our dogs if we're not careful. Here’s what you NEED to know about the risks of walking in hot weather:
Paw Pad Burns 🔥
Concrete can reach scorching temperatures that can burn your dog’s sensitive paw pads. Even walking on grass isn’t always safe when it’s sweltering out. If you can’t keep your hand on the ground for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
Heatstroke 🥵
Dogs can’t sweat like us. Instead, they pant to regulate their body temperature, and sometimes it’s just not enough. On hot days, they’re at risk of heatstroke, which is life-threatening. Symptoms include:
🐾Excessive panting
🐾Rapid heart rate
🐾Drooling
🐾Vomiting or diarrhea
🐾Bright red or pale gums
If you notice any of these signs, get your dog to a cool place immediately and contact a vet.
Overexertion 🐕💨
Some dogs, especially puppies, older dogs, and brachycephalic breeds (like Bulldogs or Pugs), are more vulnerable to the heat. Overexertion can be dangerous for these pups, leading to exhaustion, muscle cramps, and even collapse.
❗ What to do in case of overheating ❗
If your dog shows signs of heatstroke, move them to a cooler area immediately, offer water, and wet their body with cool (NOT cold) water. If they don’t recover quickly, seek emergency veterinary care.
Keep your pups safe by staying mindful of the risks of hot weather. If you're unsure whether it’s safe to walk your dog, remember: it’s better to skip the walk than to risk their health!
