✨We are trialling out our first Nail Clipping clinic! There is no need to book, just turn up! ✨

We recommend dog’s nails are clipped every 4-6 weeks to maintain the health and comfort of your dog.

What can happen if my dog’s nails are too long?
- Overgrown nails can lead to pain and discomfort as they exert pressure on the nail bed and toe joints.
- This discomfort can affect the dog’s posture and weight distribution, leading to further complications such as joint misalignment or injuries.
- Long nails are more prone to splitting or breaking, which can be painful and may require veterinary treatment.
- In extreme cases, overgrown nails can curl back into the pad of the foot, causing severe pain and potential infections.
- Long nails can hinder a dog’s ability to walk or run properly, affecting their overall mobility. This is particularly important for older dogs, where maintaining proper posture and mobility is essential for their quality of life.

Do you have a golden oldie and you’re worried about taking them to a groomers?
Rest assured, here’s why Shabby to Chic could be a great match for your best friend!

As dogs age, they often face various physical and mental health challenges that can make traditional grooming practices more difficult. Here are some of our strategies used to support senior dogs.

Gentle Handling: Senior dogs often come in with delicate skin and underlying health issues such as arthritis or joint pain. We always ensure they are handled with care, using soft brushes and tools designed for sensitive skin. As well as using sensitive shampoo, with no parabens and sulphates. We ensuring that the dryers used are also on lower settings, whilst using happy hoodies to reduce noise and sensitivity. This approach minimizes discomfort and stress during the grooming process.

Breaks: Older dogs tend to tire more quickly than younger ones. Therefore, we always ensure they are given extra breaks if needed. As well as letting them sit/ lay down during the grooming process. We can always work around them! This helps prevent fatigue and anxiety.

Non slip surfaces: We provide an anti-fatigue matting on the grooming table for senior dogs during the grooming process. As many older dogs may struggle with balance due to mobility issues. Non-slip mats can help them feel secure while being groomed.

Regular Grooms: We recommend senior dogs are groomed more regularly to keep the length they are at the groomers to a minimum. This will help keep ontop of the coat and reduce stress levels.

Hi! I’m Shelby, the face behind Shabby to Chic! Nice to meet you! 👋
I thought it was time to introduce myself to all of our new followers and those that are yet to let me pamper your pooches! 🤗

I started training in Dog Grooming in 2014, and once I had gained my level 2 certificate I started my business from home. Whilst I built my business up and started gaining more experience, I carried on training for my level 3 Diploma which I gained in 2016.

The Princes Trust helped me open my very first salon in 2018.

I have completed 1-1 training days with some of the UK’s top groomers in pet and breed standard trims, as well as poodle show trims. I regularly attend seminars to keep up to date with training in the industry.

I own two standard poodles, Kyan and Reuben and a Cavapoo, Daisy. Daisy is my best friend and is always attached to my hip! ♥️ I previously used to compete in dog grooming competitions with Kyan, but he’s getting an old boy now!

If you have any questions, just ask! 😊

Handsome boy Blue! 💙 I do love grooming Cocker Spaniels, they look so smart once they’ve had their makeover!

We highly recommend that Cocker Spaniels are not clipped and we will always ensure you know the risks before you ask us to do this. Here are some of the risks and why we don’t like to clip.

🐾Structure of the Coat
Cocker Spaniels possess a double coat consisting of a soft undercoat and a longer outer coat. The undercoat provides insulation against temperature extremes, keeping them warm in winter and cool in summer. The outer coat protects against environmental elements such as moisture, dirt, and UV rays. Clipping can disrupt this natural barrier, leading to potential overheating in summer or increased exposure to cold in winter.

🐾Temperature Regulation
One of the primary reasons for not clipping their coat, is their ability to regulate body temperature through their fur. The air trapped between the layers of their coat helps insulate them from both heat and cold. When clipped, this insulation is compromised, which can lead to overheating during warmer months as there is less fur to help with airflow around the skin. Many owners mistakenly believe that shorter hair will keep their dog cooler; however, it often has the opposite effect by reducing airflow.

🐾Coat Texture Changes
Clipping can permanently alter the texture of the coat. Once clipped, many dogs will develop a coarser or uneven coat as it grows back. This change can affect not only appearance but also how effectively the coat functions in terms of protection and insulation. Hand stripping or sc******ng is often recommended instead because it allows for more control over maintaining the natural texture while removing dead hair.

🐾Grooming Needs
Groomers typically recommend using tools like a Slicker Brush, coat king or banded comb or similar brushes designed specifically for double-coated breeds to manage shedding effectively without compromising coat quality.

✨CLEANLINESS✨

At Shabby to Chic, we pride ourselves on the cleanliness we practice in the salon! We feel that this is an extremely important part of the day to day running of the salon!

Why is Cleanliness important?

🐾 Health and Safety of Pets and Humans
Cleanliness in a Dog Grooming salon is crucial for the health and safety of both pets and humans. A dirty environment can harbor various pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can be transmitted between animals and even to humans. For instance, conditions such as kennel cough or parasites like fleas can spread rapidly in unsanitary conditions. By maintaining a clean grooming area, we as groomers can significantly reduce the risk of disease transmission, protecting not only the pets we care for but also ourselves and our clients.

🐾Prevention of Contagions and Zoonotic Diseases
Improper sanitation can lead to the spread of contagions illnesses that affects pets
and zoonotic diseases, which are transmissible between animals and humans. Shabby to Chic uses a UV steriliser for all brushes, combs, blades etc used after each dog. As well as cleaning with a powerful pet safe disinfectant which destroys bacteria, viruses and fungi. Everything is thoroughly deep cleaned at the end of each day.

🐾Enhanced Comfort for Pets
A clean grooming environment contributes to the overall comfort of pets during their grooming sessions. Dogs are more likely to feel relaxed and at ease in a tidy space free from unpleasant odors or visible dirt.

🐾Professional Image and Customer Trust
Maintaining high standards of cleanliness reflects professionalism in a Dog Grooming salon. We believe that clients are more likely to trust a groomer that prioritises hygiene practices, as well as signalling that your pets will receive quality care in a safe setting.

Rest assured, your pet is in a safe and clean environment with us at Shabby to Chic! 😊
