Jasper is a super high energy, busy dog (in typical working bred spaniel style). But did you know he doesn't need hours of walking a day to keep him happy?

Sure, he enjoys long leisurely walks when we do them (as do I), but he MUCH more enjoys his training walks.

Yesterdays wander was around 45 mins through the woods, and in that time we worked on -

- recall & staying close (not allowing him to go self employed)
- controlled hunting of a ball & retrieves (the reward for which was more hunting of more balls πŸ˜‚). Meeting those breed specific needs!
- down stay whilst other dogs pass & waiting for the ok before he goes to say hi. I do believe interactions with his own species are important, but at the same time have the responsibility of ensuring those interactions are safe & wanted!
- freedom to move his body in nature

Then home for some chewie downtime 😊

Sunday afternoon chilling πŸ₯°

It's pouring out & my oldies would rather not walk in the rain these days (no complaints from me on that 😜), so it's a long lasting chew kinda day for us.

DID YOU KNOW? 🦴

Chewing is a species typical behaviour that all too often is underrated when considering the wellbeing of our dogs.

Free ranging dogs, when given the opportunity, will participate in chewing for up to 5% of their day.

Not only is chewing great for oral health & boredom breaking, it can also stimulate an increase in the neurotransmitter dopamine (associated with the feeling of pleasure) & the neurotransmitter GABA (associated with the feeling of calmness).

Chewing is a natural dog behaviour that should be promoted in our dogs with appropriate chew options, not demonized.

As my oldies had a Hoopers lesson this morning, it was the perfect opportunity to get Jasper out for some quality one on one time together.

It's important that our dogs living in a multi-dog household (even if he does only live with me part time πŸ˜…) get to spend solo time with us, maintaining that secure attachment with their human & not just their dog housemates.

Even at nearly 8 years old (still my baby-dog) we have things we are still working on. Jasper for example is learning to see other dogs approaching as an environmental recall cue, so our solo walks give me a great opportunity to work on this with him without also having to keep tabs on my others too 🐾

Today we saw Bessie for a 1-2-1 training session πŸ₯°

Bess can sometimes find the world a little worrying, so we are building up some important life skills to help her cope a bit better.

We also worked on starting muzzle conditioning, loose leash, reflex to name & conditioning a really reliable recall 🌟

Super clever girlie 🧑

WHO AM I?

My name is Katie & I am a dog training geek. At this point, training, behaviour and ethology of our canine friends is bordering on an obsession.

I am owned by two of my own personal dogs, a Labrador and a Working Cocker Spaniel, and we are also frequently joined by my borrowed-a-spaniel (pictured below), who joins us for sporting fun and adventures.

I have competed very successfully in flyball with my Spaniels (including getting to experience the thrill of the big green carpet at Crufts with my heart dog- Jacko), dabbled in agility, frequently train in canicross, and more recently have began to explore the world of hoopers.

I've been working with dogs professionally for twelve years now, including boarding kennels, rescue, pet sitting and dog walking, and figured its about time I started turning my obsession and dream into real life.

I am currently working towards attaining my behaviour qualifications, studying a Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Applied Animal Behaviour (Canine), with plans to then move onto my Level 6. I am also a strong believer in ensuring my knowledge is kept as up to date as possible (as any canine professional should), and so make sure to keep my CPD list topped up through education providers such as CaninePrinciples, School of Canine Science, and Dogenius Institute.

I am a member of the Pet Professional Network and proud to follow Do No Harm Dog Training principles 🧑
