Question for the breeders!

Daisy laid eight eggs 22 days ago and she's been eating a very small mouse every 4/5 days since then, she is piling the weight on fast! She's gained 47g in 20 days

In your experience, do females just gain weight back quickly after laying to bounce back or should I be expecting a double clutch?

(Also she does have a tongue tip πŸ˜…)

It's no secret that I love love l o v e to talk about my snakes and especially my hognose pairings! 🀭
Problem is...most people don't have any idea what I'm on about πŸ˜…πŸ€”

I originally made these little breeding tree diagrams to help my partner better understand my goals because he's the main one that has to put up with it πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ but I've found that they're really useful when explaining the concept to my friends and family too

So I thought I'd post a relevant one on here for anybody who'd prefer a visual representation - this is the pairing that produced the eight eggs I have in the incubator right now ☺️

We definitely have baby brain at the moment with our eggs approaching two weeks in incubation and still looking good
But it's important to remember our two little guys!

See if you can spot little Tammie peeking her head out!

With the new rack I also tried a new substrate - beech chips!
Unfortunately I ended up really really not liking it because for burrowing aspen just seems so superior. What do you guys use and like?

It finally happened! She waited ten days after shedding to drop them but had no problems laying eight beautiful healthy eggs, no slugs!

I'm over the moon, she's a first time layer and did amazingly - bless her the girl is drained but we'll get a small dusted meal in her and she'll bounce back
I definitely won't be encouraging a double clutch, the pairing was last second so the hatchlings aren't too colourful but these are my first eggs so I couldn't care less!

Doing the daily checks and I thought somebody looked a little darker than usual...
I love seeing that beautiful blue belly, this is of course Slinga my big normal boy het toffeebelly

And for those wondering, Daisy is out of blue and a couple of days off shedding - I can't wait!! ☺️

Um...Daisy is in shed πŸ˜…
Strange thing is, I wasn't expecting a shed for another twenty days so this has thrown a slight spanner in the works and raised many questions
This is my first season, I'm still learning πŸ™

I'm thinking that this growth shed might be necessary in order to plump up for the remainder of her pregnancy, especially because she's a first time breeder? What do you think?

Or unfortunately this does open up the possibility that she isn't pregnant at all, just very chubby 🀭
Stay tuned! 🫑

We're back! We had an amazing time seeing the architecture and I met some awesome people but Barcelona certainly left its mark on me πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚

There are plenty of jobs to do now that I'm back - the last batch of leaf insect eggs must be shipped and after cleaning, health checking and feeding all the snakes there was finally time to relax!

We're headed to Barcelona tomorrow and things have been quiet here but we've had quite a few snakes shed so I thought I'd show them at full scale! 😊

If the conditions are correct, snakes can give you one long perfect shed with one opening in the head of the shed where they slithered out
Snakes have transparent, modified scales that act as eyelids and are fused - these are shed too!
I check all sheds for these eye caps because they can cause damage to the eye if left behind 😬
As you can see, Mortimer and Rodger gave me another long and healthy shed! πŸ’ͺ

Benson is the only snake that I have reared from a hatchling until full adulthood!
His funky colouration is called the banana morph because as he's aged his yellows and oranges have muted and little black speckles have sprouted just like a banana 🍌☺️

These pictures show how his colours have aged and how big he's got! πŸ’ͺ
Although he won't grow much larger than this, I'm excited to see how his colours may further change with each shed

Maggie update! She is doing amazingly, eats like a champion (hasn't missed a meal so far)
As is standard, she is πŸ‘ incredibly πŸ‘ skittish and will happily launch herself from hands when she's first handled
As you can see, if you give her a couple of minutes she becomes quite the inquisitor πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Š

Exciting news! Remember my last post about Daisy? πŸ‘€ Well these are pretty clear signs that she's ovulating and sexually mature!
I know we said that we were taking this season off but I just couldn't resist seeing if her and Victor might hit it off and within a few hours, a lock! (Apologies for the low quality, I didn't want to stress them by peeping for too long)
If this lock takes then we might get normal, condas (like the dad) or supercondas!! (A patternless snake)
Stay tuned ;)

So...This is Daisy and recently she's been acting a bit strange. She shed yesterday (but she shed just two weeks ago!) and is gaining weight much faster than she should considering she eats a small mouse every seven days. Usually, Daisy won't touch her humid hide but in the past week she will not leave it!
Daisy is approaching three years old and has never been paired but was brumated πŸ‘€.what do we think? Should I expect a bunch of slugs?

Three of our snakes are in shed at the moment but the easiest to notice are definitely the red ones!
Here's Spencer (the little orange dude) and Mortimer (bigger orange dude)

Mortimer was particularly unhappy that I bothered him inside his humid hide which is just a box full of moss to create an environment more humid than the rest of the enclosure, this ensures that he'll give me one nice long healthy shed 🀌
It's very normal for snakes to be a little on the irritable side when they shed, as you can see they are completely blind from that eye scale becoming opaque! πŸ‘€πŸ™ˆ

This is Rodger! CB23 Caramel 66% het axanthic, 66% het toffeebelly that I picked up in December last year. This greedy boy has never refused a meal for me yet, he's 23g (and yes fingers are also on the menu)
I have my fingers crossed for his potential axanthic het to prove out because that would make him a frostbite maker!!
Caramel is my favourite morph, I was over the moon when I found him because not many people in the UK produce caramel without hypo. I can't wait to see his colours change including the famous all white belly which has started to creep in 😌
That's all my hogs, most of them are young but in the next one/two years we'll have some very exciting developments and pairings!

01/04/2024

We're back from Scotland! I've come back to many hungry mouths so here's a few quick clips of the hogs chowing down πŸ€ŒπŸ‘
Everybody ate except Tammie because she's in shed!
(And yes, my new little Maggie is also still in shed, more to come!!)

This is delicate little Daisy! She's CB22 Albino conda 100% het axanthic and 126g - I only picked her up at the end of last year but she is definitely the sweetest hog I have!
This girl has never hissed, struck or shown any defensive behaviour, I can't quite believe it πŸ€”
With a bit of luck she'll be ready for the 2025 season to pair with Spencer 🫑

🚨 New species alert! 🚨
This is Maggie, a CB23 Madagascar giant hognose (I know I know not the hognose we're all used to but still a very valid hognose 🀫)

She arrived this morning and we'll be leaving her be for about a week to shed and settle in
Although it'll be a very long journey until she's fully grown, I am so so excited to work with her!
Anybody else keep mad hogs?

I'm headed to Scotland for the next seven days and unfortunately I πŸ‘€ won't πŸ‘€ be taking any snakes with me ;)
I really won't but the day I leave there's going to be an exciting new arrival and a new species for me!

This is Spencer! He is a CB23 Albino 100% het axanthic and a little 30g wriggler (very difficult to photograph)
He is super super reluctant to move up to small fuzzies and only just took food from the tongs last week (otherwise he's drop fed) but I'm very impressed with how much he's calmed down over the recent months
Hopefully he'll be ready for the 2025 season!

This is Slinga! He was my first snake (CB21) and he's a normal 100% het toffeebelly
A very calm hog and a fantastic eater! He's a bigger male at 156g and will pair with Tammie in 2026 to produce toffeebellies

This is Tammie! (She may or may not be my favourite at 80g)
(Heterodon nasicus)
She is a CB23 Toffeebelly conda 50% het albino and she is the cobra πŸ‘ queen πŸ‘ - this fiesty lady is not afraid to let me know when she's upset. She spends 90% of her time flattened like a pancake πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
My hope is that she'll be ready for the 2026 season to pair with my first ever snake (the original stud) 😳

Despite the name, hognoses aren't all we care for! We also keep a wide variety of isopod species, a couple groups of millipedes, some beetle larvae, leaf insects and stick insects
(I have about 300 leaf insect eggs available, drop me a message if you're interested in any amount)

Pictured below:
Armadillo officinalis (Greek hissing isopod)
Archispirostreptus gigas (Giant African millipede)

This is Victoria! She is a CB22 normal conda 100% het lavender and the counterpart to Victor.
When I purchased her she was already a year old but only weighed 8g! 😬 (She's now at 119g)
Despite being a troublesome feeder for her breeder 😎, she chows down like a champ now and is well on her way to being of sufficient size to breed in 2025
Because I've raised her from such a little thing, this girl is quite special to me 😊

This is Victor! He is a CB18 normal conda 100% het lavender male and I picked him up at the 2023 IHS show in June. Him (and his soon to be wife) were my first investment made and breeding pair purchased, he was an alarming 48g with a prominent spine when I got him but is now safely sat at 111g. He is the sassiest, loudest hognose I have and will also be pairing with big Pam to prove out her potential lavender het πŸ˜‰

We're going to sit the 2024 season out but 2025 will be a good one! This is Pamela, she's CB19 and a big beautiful normal - 66% het lavender, 66% het hypo
I purchased her as an adult last year and she's sitting around 280g
In the next season the aim is to prove out the lavender het, she'll be paired with my 100% het lavender male

22/02/2024

Okay let's give this a go! 2025 will be my first breeding season, I'll have three hognose females. I've got very solid plans for morphs I'd like to be producing so hopefully this blog should be able to show some very exciting things in the next couple of years!
I currently keep leaf and stick insects, millipedes, beetles and isopods - I've got plans to hopefully take on frogs, geckos and Madagascar hogs within a few years :)
