Pairing novel or potentially scary experiences with positive associations is exactly what puppy socialisation should be!
Now, I could have walked this puppy along a narrow pavement or some lanes and tried to get her to accept treats or reassure her when cars passed, but she would have likely found it scary or overwhelming.
Instead, we worked in an open space where she could see cars, vans, lorries, and buses at a distance she felt comfortable. Using the longline meant she could advance and retreat as she felt necessary. We paired this with a game of tuggy to really cement that traffic isn't scary as play is a great reinforcer!

Whether your dog is trying to express that they are worried, anxious, or in pain, so often, these attempts at communication are missed or ignored.
Remember, your dog is limited in how they can communicate with you. That "stubborness" may be a sign of pain or discomfort. That growl is your dog telling you that they are uncomfortable with something.
Listen to what your dog is trying to communicate.

At nearly 11 years old (4003 days to be exact), Ruby is still as fit as ever, with very few signs of discomfort or joint pain.
And yet, we frequently see younger dogs exhibiting lameness, dysfunctional gait patterns, and other symptoms of pain and osteoarthritis.
Now, some of this may be genetic, but management plays a huge factor, too! Ruby is hypermobile, meaning the chances of her joints picking up damage over the years is higher.
What do I mean by managing to protect their joints?
Keep your dog at a healthy weight, 50% of dogs in the UK are overweight or obese. You can use Body Condition Scoring to help you monitor your dogs weight.
Avoid repetitive, high impact games like fetch, particularly with a ball launcher. If you want to play fetch with your dog, you can adjust how you play to reduce the strain on your dog's body.
Keeping your dog fit with low impact exercise with help strengthen the soft tissues (muscle, tendon, and ligament) around the joints and stronger soft tissue structures will reduce the risk of injury. Canine Conditioning, Massage, and Hydrotherapy are particularly beneficial.
Protecting your dog's joints doesn't mean completely bubblewrapping them and never letting them have fun. Ruby was still able to run, play, climb, and have fun, but by doing everything above, we protected her from painful conditions associated with ageing dogs.
