No. He is not shy.ย

No. He has not been abused.ย

No. He was not poorly socialized.ย

He just doesn't like you, and because he doesn't like you..... he doesn't want you to touch him.ย

For the record, he doesn't DISlike you either. You just literally do not mean anything to him, and as such, he sees no reason to allow you to invade his personal space.ย

Yes, he backs off when you try to force your unwanted affection on him. No, he is not afraid. He's just getting the hell away from you because he thinks you're rude and inappropriate.ย

Dogs that don't OH MY GAWD LOVE EVERYONE are not automatically mean or scared. Sometimes, they just don't give a crap about saying hello.

Love,ย

It was an absolute pleasure working with Michael and Gordon to help their two very reactive girls!

When we started working together, walks were stressful for everyone as the dogs reacted at pretty much everything from people to dogs, cars, and even pigeons. Michael and Gordon worked incredibly hard to give their girls the best lives possible after an unknown start and some mishandling by previous trainers.

We started with equipment changes, engagement work, and introducing loose-lead walking to enable Michael and Gordon to safely handle the girls on walks due to their size and strength before going on to work on desensitisation and counter-conditioning to their triggers.

I'm so proud of how far they have progressed in our time working togetherโค๏ธ

Another reminder that no matter how exhausting or heart-breaking working through your dogโ€™s reactivity is, it is 100% worth it!

We've just returned home from a long weekend camping at Welsh Kennel Club Champ Show. It was Carlos' first proper camping experience, and he was an absolute star.

Carlos spent most of his time sitting outside our tent, watching the world and their dog. We're talking big dogs, groups of little dogs, dogs, taking great interest or barking at him, and not A SINGLE REACTION or even a bark back! In fact, most of the time, he didnโ€™t even bother to get up from where he was led.

We could relax, and so could he! I couldn't imagine doing this with him when he first arrived with us.

It does get better! It is worth the hard work!

Well, I'm glad you asked...

Letโ€™s say your dog has a negative experience with another dog (insert your dogโ€™s trigger here), the next time he sees another dog, he might bark and lunge instinctively, and the dog moves away. Your dogโ€™s brain has made a link โ€œah ha! If I perform this behaviour, the thing that is causing distress moves awayโ€ and a neural pathway has formed to remind your dog of that experience.ย

Consider the well-worn path in this image as a neural pathway. Regular use of a path between two points will keep it clear and well used, even if not used for brief periods of time. So, the more often your dog sees another dog and reacts, the more worn this pathway becomes, meaning that these behaviours can become more automatic.ย

However, it is possible to use appropriate training and behavioural modification techniques to modify these pathways or form new ones.ย

As you begin to build positive associations with your dogโ€™s triggers, a new pathway will be forming. Regular repetition and working within your dogโ€™s threshold will continue to strengthen the pathway. Over time, this new pathway will become more well-worn and used, enabling your dog to offer this new behaviour rather than barking and lunging at the trigger.

๐Ÿพ A few days ago, I noticed Ruby was standing with stood strangely. She was positioning her left forelimb slightly further back than her right forelimb and also slightly base wide - if you were to draw a straight line from the front of her shoulders to the ground, her feet a positioned outside of the line.

๐Ÿถ Ruby was overdue her regular massage treatment and had a recent increase in activity, too, after returning to hydrotherapy.

๐Ÿ• Upon palpation, I found muscle tension her triceps, shoulders, and back, with a couple of small adhesions on her left side.

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป After treatment, Ruby is standing much better. Both front feet are weight-bearing equally and positioned much more symmetrically, and her feet are much better positioned underneath her shoulders!

๐˜ˆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ:
Latissimus dorsi draws the limb forward and laterally, depresses the vertebral column, supports the limb and draws it against the body, and retracts the limb during shoulder flexion.
