Get ready for the yaaaaawn!!
3-week Russian dove dumbo doe 💕
I can’t always tell them apart from a distance….😅
Rats cannot be vaccinated, so I try to keep those that have been to rats shows in a separate space (with cage mates) for a short time upon returning from shows.
I’m preparing for a rat show! I only take confident rats that I think will be okay with a day out. Rats shows are filled with experts who can help guide me in my breeding program.
Coconut is snoozing through the rugby!
Every morning, I have coffee with my Rats. When you have a lot of rats, that’s a lot of coffee….
Would you like to see Dinky at almost 9 weeks? What an extraordinary colour!
I haven’t bred any but I do love dwarf rats! 💕
I took this eight week old buck to a show recently for the sole purpose of asking some of the most experienced rat breeders in the country to speculate on what variety he might be.
I don’t breed randomly, nor do I generally get surprised by what my rats produce.I know their genetic make up and I know the possibilities. I know, for example, that four or five generations back I bred a doe who had a sister t that did produce platinum. So there’s every reason to think this boy could be a Russian expressing platinum, a gene that is both rare and difficult to get.
He is certainly Russian and mink. That makes him a dove technically but those bright eyes suggest platinum (and doves should not have eyes like this!)
Given what I know of my rats, I believe him to be a Russian dove that happens to have two different types of mink being expressed, as well as a single copy of red eyed dilute. However, just in case he IS a platinum, I will try him with one of Mary Giles' quicksilver does....that is, when he is much older! :)
Mary breeds platinum and quicksilver among other varieties and it would be nice if he could help with that endeavour, though I'm a bit skeptical at the moment that he is truly platinum.
Russian dove doe, 7.5 weeks
Dinky’s eyes don’t match so I am holding onto her to make sure she’s okay….sometimes a baby rat just has to stick with me for a little extra time but don’t worry she will be out and about playing with me daily along with her sisters!
How I set up a Savic Freddy Max: I gut it and start again! This cage includes:
One double hammock
One single hammock/fall breaker
1 perch hammock
1 large corner hammock
Ropes
Cargo rope
14” TikTok wheel
Corner toilet
3 wooden perches
1 large water bottle of water
1 bottle with vitamins in the water
I box
This strange looking fellow can look beige, blue, or very pale in different lights 🐀❤️
Russian silver or Russian dove…
I have very unusual rats and sometimes I struggle to figure out exactly their genetics. I’ve been working with this group for years and ought to know by now!
This six week old doe kitten looks very blue to me, like she could be a pale Russian silver. However, given the other possibilities, I cannot yet make that conclusion. So, we wait and see how she looks in weeks in months to come.
Fresh food for breakfast 💕
I hope this little lady decides to GROW….💕🐀
Remember our cryptoorchid boy? Well, Slinky has gone through a successful neuter and is very well indeed! He will be returning to his lovely owner later today! 💕
Breakfast for the babies…the coffee is for me!
Would you like to see a baby rat that looks very much like a platinum? I don’t think he is a platinum, but isn’t it fun to see!
A few does should be available from this small litter in about 4 weeks….if you can wrest them away from me…💕😅
This is important for your rats…💕
My naturally caffeinated girls…💕
My great platinum imitator (and honestly quite convincing but he is Russian…)
Cages on wheels have advantages!
9 week old doe kittens! Me showing you what I’m keeping…or trying to!
A Russian blue, a Russian dove that is lovely but is too dark to show, and a somewhat off-standard Russian buff!
I am delighted by them 💕 Lovely, lively friendly kittens 🥰
