09/01/2024

The Barber's Pole Worm, Haemonchus Contortus, is causing increasing problems in our area, and across the southern UK. Last year we saw major outbreaks in August and September, but we have seen cases as early as May and as late as November. Unlike most scour worms, it will cause disease in ewes as well as lambs, and as it doesn't cause diarrhoea, many people miss infection until it is too late.

All sheep and goat farmers are invited to join us for this meeting to understand this worm and how you can plan for sustainable control of haemonchosis- are you using all the tools in your arsenal?

Date:
Friday 19th January, 1000-1200, Larkmead Vets (OX10 9PA)

Workshop cost:
£50 per person (50% discount for health club members)

Lunch provided

If you would like to attend, please phone the office on 01491 651479 or email [email protected] to reserve your space.

11/11/2023

A case of Bluetongue has been confirmed in Kent.

What is Bluetongue?
Bluetongue is a viral infection that is notifiable in the UK. It affects cattle, sheep, goats and camelids as well as other ruminants such as deer.

How is it spread?
The virus is spread by midges and is normally introduced from midges crossing the channel. This means that the south coast of England is the most likely starting point for UK infection.

What does this mean for me?
At the moment a temporary control zone has been set up in a 10km radius of the case. No animal movements will be licensed within or out of this zone.

What are the symptoms?
Sheep are the most likely to show signs that include:
- ulcers or sores in the mouth and nose
- discharge from the eyes or nose and drooling from mouth
- swelling of the lips, tongue, head and neck and the coronary band (where the skin of the leg meets the horn of the foot)

In cattle it can cause:
- lethargy
- crusty erosions around the nostrils and muzzle
- redness of the mouth, eyes, nose
- reddening of the skin above the hoof
- nasal discharge
- reddening and erosions on the teats
- fever
- milk drop
- not eating
- abortion

If you have any further questions don’t hesitate to get in touch.
