About me (Jo McSweeney - Trainer, Dogs & Owners):

I've always had two main loves - people and dogs - every qualification I've taken, or job I've had, or dependent I've loved has allowed me to develop a better understanding of both. I have a science degree in human Psychology, a past career in customer service and account management (Advertising), and a current career in dog training. The last of

which began at The Company of Animals (Surrey) in 2010 where I worked for Roger Mugford and was mentored by Wendy King. I have worked with agility and obedience trainers, and behaviourists and have supplemented these years of practical experience with academic studies in dog training and behaviour from COAPE. Since moving to Oxted, I set up Dogs & Owners and work with clients on a one-to-one basis. I love working with dogs and owners of all ages with the aim of helping them better understand each other. As my company name suggests, I believe that support for the owners is just as important as the training for the dogs. I have a holistic approach, believing that a number of things can improve a specific behaviour - I'm afraid I won't just give you a few commands to learn! However, I'm also a realist and enjoy working out what works for both the dog and the owner. Any training helps from commands, to tricks, to games, but I believe in creating a lifestyle shift so dogs and owners can enjoy each other and training for the whole of their lives. There's no greater joy than a dog that understands you and a dog that knows you understand them.

Got to love a Ridgeback! He's a bit older, bigger, and has done really well with his training, so he's definitely wiser too! In our last session, he wouldn't walk on the wet grass - a lovely example of how it's easy to forget that larger breeds remain puppies for a very long time! Love him!

Hi everyone, hope you're all doing ok? I thought I'd run something for winter online now that the weather isn't so warm. This 5-Week course is suitable for dogs & owners of all ages, although I'd say it's a beginners/refresher course. I think it will work best with 4-8 owners/households so if you're keen, get booking! Please do share with anyone you know who may be interested - I am based in Oxted, but this course is available to anyone with Zoom. Hopefully see some of you there!

Proof again that size does not matter - this little Mal-Shi was keen to learn and very attentive and the owners' daughter made all the training look very easy! Well done all!

This little guy has just completed a six-week training course, which has taken closer to six months because of various lock-downs! He looks so different now! Thanks to his lovely owners who have been up for all sorts of hurdles from training in the pouring rain, to changing to Zoom calls, to trialing new assault course equipment. They've all done really well!

Just received my certificate for attending the online Dog Behaviour Conference run by Victoria Stilwell of 'It's Me or the Dog' TV fame. Highly informative conference that has inspired me and given me some new ideas to weave into classes and courses over time.
