The key nutrient groups required for a balanced diet;

Carbohydrates – main energy source.

When the frost hits, it’s crucial to provide your horse with a reliable, safe forage solution.
Avoid sudden changes in feed, forages and pasture as this may cause digestive disruption.
Try to always feed good quality forage at all times; this can help support well-being and performance.
Always double check your horse's water source. Break and remove ice from troughs, buckets and automatic system.
If the automatic system is frozen, use buckets instead to monitor water intake.
An increase in forage may be required due to the decrease in turnout time and grass availability
Try to avoid or limit frosty grass for those horses with metabolic and endocrine issues, especially when it is combined with sunny mornings

Horses and ponies often drink less in the colder months, which can increase the risk of colic. Here are some top tips to support hydration.

💧Provide fresh clean water at all times
❄️Break and remove the ice from troughs and buckets
🪣If the automatic system is frozen, use buckets to monitor water intake
🔥 Horses are not keen cold water, adding some hot may help
🐴Add warm water to feeds
💧Feed a forage with a higher moisture content, such as HorseHage
🍎Adding a yummy flavouring such as apple juice to the water can help increase intake.

Turnout horses as much as possible, quite often horses are stabled for longer periods of time in the winter months. This can increase the exposure to dust in their environment.
Consider feeding a dust free forage such as HorseHage can support respiratory health.
Soaking and steaming can also help with reducing the dust content in forage. However, this is not always possible in the winter months or at all yards
The stable should be well ventilated with cobwebs and dust removed regularly.

How HorseHage Began

The company was established over 40 years ago when the late Mark Westaway (Snr) became increasingly concerned about his event horses persistently coughing. His veterinary surgeon expressed the view that the coughing was dust-related and that since hay was the major dust source, the problem would continue unless someone could come up with a dust-free forage designed specifically for the horse. So the challenge was set and from that chance but significant remark, the idea for HorseHage was born.

The company, Mark Westaway and Son, which has developed the HorseHage brand into a global name, is now headed by Mark’s son, (also named Mark) and his brother-in-law, Chris Tar.

Mark comes from a farming background and the Westaway family has been based at Love Lane Farm in Marldon, Devon since 1952. This is now also the Head Office of the HorseHage operation, and one of three regional licensed producers in the UK – the other two being Friendship Estates in South Yorkshire and Fox Feeds in Hertfordshire. There are also HorseHage producers in Germany, Sweden and New Zealand.
