I am alive, I promise!

In September I returned to college, putting the rescue on 'pause' due to this. I originally only went back to start at foundation maths (working my way upto GCSE) and retake my English GCSE, somehow that snowballed into numerous other courses and I'm potentially (shockingly, i mean, I'm hardly Miss Intelligent) going to university in a couple of years time.

I wanted to take the time to settle into a new, busier routine before I came back to rescuing. So, here I am! I will be making headway on the inbox tomorrow so apologies if anyone has been trying to get ahold of me for a while.

While I am returning to rescue I will be doing so in a much smaller fashion and it may take me a little longer to reply to people.

As ever, if it is an emergency situation please message my personal profile (Amy Farren) or email [email protected] or [email protected].

Now that is all out of the way, how are everyone and their furballs doing?!

*** RABBIT FOSTERS NEEDED ***

Due to a sudden influx of new rabbits, we are desperately looking for temporary or long-term foster homes for some of our residents.

To become a foster, you need:

- A suitably sized hutch and run
- To live within a 20 minute drive of Whitchurch, Hampshire
- Ideally the ability to drive in case the rabbit urgently needs the vet

In return, we provide:

- All food, bedding and hay
- Bottles, bowls and any other equipment (other than hutches)
- Veterinary costs and trips to the vet

If anyone can help, please do get in touch! Thank you! ๐Ÿฐโ™ฅ๏ธ

This beautiful boy is Diglett (bet you can't work out why Zac named him that.. ๐Ÿ˜‚)

He's a young dwarfs, roughly 3 or 4 months old, he was a Christmas present for some children who sadly lost interest. He's super friendly and will he available for adoption soon, I will be working my way down the dwarf waiting list firstly.. I will also be checking he's 100% a boy when he's had a little time to settle in. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Big thankyou to Mollie Silver for getting him to us safely. โค

Really sorry I've been quiet for quite a while, I plan to start working through the inbox tonight.

As we're in lockdown again I've had to dedicate my days to home learning, Zac has a few extra needs which, as you'd expect, can be very time consuming - especially as it's only me and him. I'm going to spend this week getting back on top of everything so I can remain active and open whilst still being available to help Zac learn after half term. Really sorry guys, I didn't mean to let anyone down, just been trying to keep my head above water.

I am OPEN for surrenders but closed for adoptions until lockdown is eased as from today, the adoption waiting lists are still active and will not be changed.

Huge sorry again and a big thankyou for your patience.

Sadly over the Christmas period we suffered a loss.
Gerald our elderly old man sadly and quickly passed away after suffering a stroke and a seizure. I'm going to use this opportunity to give anyone who suspects a hamster is having a stroke a big heads up to be super careful.
I found Gerald semi conscious in his cage, I picked him up and he started to seize, when it started he arched back and clamped his teeth down on my thumb, he seized for well over a minute and as you can imagine with those teeth it was just a bit painful, due to the seizure there was no way to get him to let go.
Luckily he bit on the bone, if he had bit barely half a centimetre to the side it would of undoubtedly left me needing a couple of stitches. Sadly barely minutes after this he peacefully passed away in my arms, it was just so quick nothing could of been done, I didn't even have the time to ring the vets.

We're both heart broken and miss him so much every single day, he was such a special and gentle little old man. ๐Ÿ’”

We're back!
So sorry everyone, someone didn't like being told they couldn't adopt from me as I suspected they were backyard breeders. After several messages of verbal abuse and threats they decided to report this page, Facebook stupidly then decided to disable/lock me out despite nothing actually being against the community standards.
I couldn't even bloody open messages, I'm so sorry I will be working my way through them all this afternoon and I'll post an update on how everything here has been going over Christmas.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a great new years. โค๏ธ

This little cutie is Mr Quaver, he's so nocturnal he's rarely seen before midnight and because of this I've only ever seen his bum or face poking out of his nest!
Last night he decided to get up early which was a lovely surprise. He was a little nervous but after a while he got used to me and let me stroke him (I think the snacks helped.๐Ÿ˜‚)

Sorry it's been a bit quiet here, it's been a busy week!
We had a beautiful new arrival, his name is King Friendly The First (guess who named him? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ) he's a male syrian around a year old, he's very friendly and confident. I will be working my way down the waiting list so keep an eye out for me if you're on there!

Also wanted to say thankyou for a couple of lovely donations we've recieved from our wishlist yesterday, it's so generous of you and we couldn't do this with out every single one of you. โค

As I run waiting lists I won't be stopping adoptions before Christmas this year - it's gonna be hard to impulse buy a hamster if you've been waiting 3 months for your name to reach the top of the list!

If you are lucky enough to be offered a hamster or pick up one in a pet store please do remember : they aren't just something for the kids to play with for a few weeks until they get bored.
Hamsters like all animals are for life, just because they are small animals doesn't mean their life is worth any less than that of a dog or cat. Hamsters only live a couple of years, for that entire time YOU are their entire world, they rely on you for literally everything.

The general rule is if a pet store recommends if then it's probably entirely unsuitable, for example Pets At Home only sell one cage large enough for hamsters now (the Savic Plaza) every single other cage or gerbilarium is not suitable for ANY small animal - even tiny mice or dwarf hams.

So please, think before you adopt or buy any animal, they really aren't something you can wrap up for christmas just because.
Take time, plan, think ahead, research correctly, never buy as a surprise gift for someone and never impulse buy for yourself.

We had a couple of new arrivals this weekend, the white ham is Tiny a small dwarf and the other is Mr Quaver, a male syrian.

Tiny won't be available for adoption for a little while, he's had a very tough start in life and is very underweight with a possible eye infection. Mr Quaver is still a baby but very nocturnal and rarely seen before midnight, he's a cutie though!

04/12/2020

Tomorrow is Zacs 7th birthday so I will not be active on here until Monday morning, as usual if it's an urgent matter you can message me on my personal account (Amy Farren) or drop me a call or text on 07760488779 and I'll see what I can do to help. โค๏ธ๐Ÿน

Our Banana passed away yesterday evening, she was around two and a half years old but it was still such a shock. 2020 has been a nightmare, we've lost Rarity, Mr Floof and now Banana, she was our last full time ham as well.. her tank feels so empty already.

She and Zac had the most amazing bond, when he got up in the morning she woke up too, when he got home from school as soon as she heard his voice she woke up again.. We're going to miss her so much.

If you need help please just ask.

If you can't afford food for your hams or other necessities please just ask, again if I can help I will.

No question, no judgement.

If I can help I will, things like this are entirely unnecessary and completely cruel.
If you can't find a rescue with space for other small animals then if I can I will take them on for short-term until somewhere more equipped has the space.

Jingle and Noel are looking "lovely and fluffy" after being found starving and covered in parasites.

Tim isn't quite so tiny anymore, he's grown a fair bit since he arrived here and he's gained some weight which is brilliant.

Jerry is so active but frequently forgets how little he is. ๐Ÿ˜‚

His cage is a little full up.. The main wooden thing is a wooden maze, I hide bits and pieces inside it to keep him busy as he is practically awake all day looking for things to do!

This is Tom, Tom is a very timid roborovski who is also quite the escape artist, he'll need a barless cage such as the zoozone 2/large or a tank. All adopters must meet cage/wheel requirements, adoption fee is ยฃ5.

Very sad to discover our Sally has passed away painlessly and peacefully in her sleep.

We withheld some information incase owners came forward as we could use that as proof of ownership, Sally was almost certainly an older hamster and unfortunately she had a few health issues, a sore skin condition with hair loss was the main one.

This is also one of the main reasons that I personally suspect she was dumped instead of simply lost, it's such a heart breaking thought as she truely was the friendliest, happiest little ham who adored her humans!
She even got into the habit of waking up each morning to say goodbye to Zac just as we were leaving for the school run, most afternoons she'd wake up again as he got home. โค๏ธ

I like to think she was happy here with us, we will miss her enormously, we really fell in love with this old girl during her time here.

I'm heart broken we didn't get longer with her but she was undoubtedly loved while she was with us here.

This cutie arrived today, Storm is a beautiful 7 month old fluffy male syrian.
Storm was reluctantly surrendered by his wonderful family, he was very loved in his previous home but sadly they had to make a very hard decision.

I will be working down the adoption waiting list when lockdown ends. Keep an eye out for a message from me if you're on there! โค๏ธ๐Ÿน

This little cutie is Twix, she's a female roborovski dwarf.
Twix is fairly confident and kinda happy to be handled despite only just arriving here!
She will be available for adoption when lockdown ends ๐Ÿฅฐ

Twix will need a cage 80x50cm but bigger is always better. She will also require a wheel of 22cm but she can easily manage a larger one if needs be.

20/11/2020

Meet Twix, the speediest little thing with such tiny little leggies!

I'm also fairly certain after a quick check that Twix is actually female!

(Twill be upgraded to a wooden wheel, her cage is currently outside my bedroom door. Those little feet are noisey! ๐Ÿ˜‚)

Heart broken to find out the beautiful Snuggles (formally Snuzzlekins) passed away today after becoming very poorly and being diagnosed with a tumour.
Such a big thankyou to Tomasz and his wonderful family for being such a perfect, loving home for her last few months.
We're so sorry for your loss, it really was way too soon. โค๏ธ

Normally I have a waiting lists for hamsters but due to her unique story and the interest in Sally I'm going to be accepting adoption requests from anyone and everyone interested instead.

I will post more information regarding this nearer the time but this is only if no one comes forward to claim this little sweetie by December 2nd. โค๏ธ๐Ÿน

Excuse the poor quality photo, I was a bit excited!

I've never seen such a confident roborovski hamster before!
It usually takes months of work and patience before they willingly walk up to your hand, yet Jerry happily came over and put his teeny front paws up and had a good sniff.

Well worth the nibble I got shortly after - my fault for smelling like biscuits! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Did you know hamsters don't hibernate?

If your hamster gets too cold they go into a state of severe shock called torpor, it's very dangerous and can be fatal if not caught quickly. If you find your hamster floppy, unresponsive but still breathing and you suspect torpor wrap them up, place them on your chest to warm them up, gently rub them to encourage circulation and call your vet for advice.

To prevent torpor ensure your hamsters cage isn't near any draughty windows or doors, has enough substrate to burrow in and plenty of safe nesting materials like unscented, ripped up toilet roll or kitchen roll.

NEVER use fluffy or cotton wool like nesting materials. The cotton/wool/fluffy nesting materials and kapock pods are so dangerous and have caused the death of many animals despite having misleading names such as "soft and safe." If those materials are pouched it can get stuck in cheek pouches, it can get wrapped around teeth and if eaten it can cause a painful intestinal impaction as the fibres are so fine they can't digest it. Many animals have also got it wrapped around their limbs and have pulled so hard to free them selves they have broken their bones, some have even chewed off their limbs to escape.

I've had alot of people requesting to adopt Sally, I don't blame you at all she's a remarkable little animal!

As I run waiting lists for all hams if she is put for adoption I'll have to work down my list first I'm afraid. (But you may have to fight Zac for her! ๐Ÿ™Š๐Ÿ˜‚)

If you wish to join this list please do let me know, all adopters require a cage atleast 80x50cm but bigger is always better. Sally will also require a wheel of 22cm or bigger.

As some of you are aware I have a few health conditions. Right now I'm going through a bad flare up, I'm not sure if it's due to the cold weather or something else but it's making my fatigue worse and everything a bit more painful than normal.

I may be a little bit slower responding to messages, calls and texts but I promise you I will get back to you asap.

As usual if it's an emergency my number is 07760488779 or message my personal account (Amy Farren).

Sorry guys for any inconvenience this may cause! โค๏ธ
