Here's a nice tip for a suspected abscess. This horse had been off for a few days, vet had been out and suspected an abscess but couldn't find anything on that day. I suggested that the owner clean and cover both feet in water, if one dried quicker than the other then there is a high chance of an abscess (or some other inflammation) sometimes only part of the foot will dry faster which can also give a location. I popped out the day after this photo was taken and found an abscess which had burst out of the coronet and it started to drain in the sole also. Just another tip to have in our tool box of figuring out what's the matter with our equine friends 😊

Here is fantastic Mr fox in his lovely high viz flex boots I fitted for his hind feet last week to give his feet a rest from shoes for a while. They fitted like a glove and he loves them 😍 thanks to his wonderful owner Sue Gaden 😊

A nice package applied to this warm blood who has come back out of retirement. These avanti shoes have really helped him feel comfortable enough to come back into work, he's now jumping 120 in the arena and loving life!! The flat luvex pads with DIM and magicushion was added today to support the frog a little more and protect his feet from concussion as his work has increased. This horse was diagnosed with sidebone after having a low grade lameness last year and is much more comfortable in this shoe. Performance hinds were applied behind. 😊 Total Foot Protection Ltd

Trimming is integral to equine welfare.
In the UK a farriery apprentice trains for 4 years, studying all aspects of hoofcare including caring for the unshod foot.
As part of their final exams, farriery apprentices need to demonstrate both practical skill, knowledge and behaviours trimming the equine foot.
Your farrier will be able to advise whether your horse or pony needs to be shod – the answer will depend on the individual equine and will include factors such as work, environment, management and current hoof health.

Another happy horse. Ted out hacking in his flex boots. He had been struggling to keep shoes on due to poor quality horn and slow growth. His boots have allowed him to get back out hacking consistently again. 😊

Today I went to one of my favourite places to practice farriery... I love this job as it makes me slow down a bit for the day which was much needed as I've been a bit maxed out lately. Self employed life has its challenges at times (feeling undervalued when you try your hardest and dedicate so much time and thought to the equines in your care, fitting in as much CPD as possible to make sure you can glean as much knowledge and skills off the many professionals so willing to share it and trying to maintain a healthy work / family life balance). It's jobs like these and fantastic clients who have your back and notice when you might not be at your best (and are always there to listen) that make being a self employed farrier so rewarding. And here's a picture of the lovely Eilidh enjoying a post trim scratch... I always try to finish working on a horse with a scratch do they remember me as the nice scratchy farrier person when I come back. I love my job 🥰

A wee video of me shoeing the lovely Echo. Although I predominantly cold shoe, hot shoeing is absolutely a service I offer as part of my business. It is something we train extensively in as farriers and is an important part of our skill set to allow us to adapt shoes to your equines needs if necessary. If you want your horse specifically hot shod, all you have to do is ask and I will happily oblige if I can get my truck close enough to your horse. 😊

Polite request...
Could anyone who is due me money please pay me ASAP. I'm currently having to chase a lot of people some who owe me for 2 visits. While I understand we are living in tough times and I enjoy my job very much, I'm not a charity and I too am living in the same tough times as everyone else. Every business is facing rising costs from all angles and we can't afford to not be paid. Non payment of outstanding balances before the next due visit will result in our appointment being cancelled. I'm more than happy to discuss payment plans of things are tight and I pride myself on being approachable.
I hope everyone has enjoyed the lovely weather. Rant over. 😊
