✨ Sunday Spotlight ✨

Mint.

Most varieties of mint leaves are generally safe for dogs in small amounts and can even offer some benefits like fresher breath and aiding digestion.

Most common mint varieties, including peppermint and spearmint, are generally considered safe for dogs to eat in small quantities. Mint's refreshing aroma can help combat bad breath and aids digestion as it can help soothe the stomach.

Mint contains nutrients like vitamin A, calcium, copper, magnesium, iron, and zinc. These vitamins and minerals are crucial for a dog's health, supporting bone health, immune function, and overall well-being.

❌ Overfeeding mint can upset a dog's digestive system, potentially causing gastrointestinal distress.

One species of mint, English pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium), is toxic to dogs and should be avoided.

Be cautious of mint products (like gum or toothpaste) that may contain xylitol, a sugar alternative that is toxic to dogs. ❌

✨ Spotlight Sunday ✨

Coconuts and coconut oil.

This may seem like a strange fruit for your dog, but it has several benefits.

Dogs can eat coconut flesh in moderation, as the flesh is not toxic. Coconuts contain antioxidants that can boost a dog's immune system.

Dried or strips of fresh coconut can act as natural dental treats helping to clean teeth, massage gums and freshen breath. Its chewy and tough texture helps to push away any build-up of food as your dog chews meaning their teeth stay cleaner and healthier for longer.

Coconut oil can be a source of healthy fats, which can benefit a dog's coat and skin. It can act as a natural stool softener and has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that can improve gut health.

Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid. It can help soothe dry, itchy skin and promote a healthy, shiny coat. Coconut oil may help reduce inflammation, potentially alleviating symptoms of allergies or skin conditions.

Some believe that coconut oil can help reduce plaque and tartar build up, promoting better oral hygiene.

❌Coconut is relatively high in calories, so it can lead to unwanted weight gain. It's also got a high fat content which can lead to stomach upsets and also increase the risk of pancreatitis so it's important to feed it in small quantities to avoid digestive upset. You should never allow dogs to chew on coconut shells, as they are hard, difficult to digest, and can pose choking or intestinal blockage risks.

While rare, some dogs may be allergic to coconut oil, so start with a small amount and monitor for any adverse reactions.

Remember, it is not a substitute for medical treatment, coconut oil should not be used as a replacement for veterinary care or prescribed medications. ❌

Crunchy and delicious, but what are their benefits?

Carrots are good for dogs because they are a low-calorie snack that contain vitamins, minerals, fibre, and antioxidants.

Carrots are crunchy and can help clean teeth and remove plaque, help maintain healthy gums and reduce tartar. They contain fibre, which can help with digestion and regulate bowel movements. Fibre can help soften stools and keep bowel movements regular

Carrots contain beta-carotene, which is converted to vitamin A in the liver. Vitamin A helps support vision, including night vision. They also contain antioxidants, which can help your dog's immune system fight off diseases and illnesses
and help promote a healthy and shiny coat.

Carrots contain soluble fibre, which can help manage blood cholesterol levels. They are a great alternative to processed snacks and are a perfect snack for teething puppies.

❌ When feeding carrots to dogs, you should be aware of the risk of choking and potential allergies. Large chunks of raw carrots can get stuck in a dog's throat or digestive tract. This can be especially dangerous for small dogs, puppies, or dogs that eat too fast. To prevent choking, cut carrots into small, bite-sized pieces.

Some dogs can be allergic to carrots. The symptoms can include itchy skin and diarrhoea. Carrots are high in natural sugars, so you should feed them to your dog in moderation. ❌

This small fruit juicy and delicious, and great for your dog. 🍏

Apples are a good source of vitamins A and C, which support immune function. They also contain fibre, which aids in digestion and regulates blood sugar levels. The crunchy texture of apples can help clean dogs' teeth and remove plaque. Apples are low in calories and can help dogs feel full. The fibre in apples promotes healthy bowel movements and can help prevent constipation.

❌ Remove the core and seeds before feeding apples to dogs, as they can be a choking hazard. You should introduce apples gradually, and limit apple consumption to a small amount as a treat or supplement to their regular diet , to avoid digestive upset. ❌

Blueberries. These little super foods have amazing benefits - and they taste great too.

Blueberries are good for dogs because they are a low-calorie treat that contain fibre, antioxidants, vitamins, and other nutrients. They are high in fibre, which can help with digestion and promote a healthy gut. They can also help maintain brain function and improve memory. Blueberries can help reduce chronic inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. They are a natural source of antioxidants, which can help protect cells from disease damage and boost the immune system.

Blueberries contain vitamins C and K, which can help support the immune system and contribute to overall health. They can help boost bones and cartilage health.
Blueberries can be a great way to enhance your dog's nutritional intake, especially if they enjoy the taste.

❌ Blueberries are safe for dogs in moderation, but excessive consumption can lead to digestive upset, diarrhoea, or vomiting. They can also be a choking hazard for small dogs or puppies. Ensure they are cut into smaller pieces or served whole if the dog is large enough to handle them safely.

Some commercially grown blueberries may contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is toxic to dogs. Check the packaging for information on xylitol content. ❌
