Dog owners are all too familiar with the potential hazards we face when we’re in the great outdoors, whether your pet is licking a strange-coloured puddle or investigating a rather old animal carcass. However, sometimes dangers lurk where we least expect them, even in your garden. One such unlikel...

Good morning.

It occurred to me yesterday that I have a lot of followers on here that might not actually be on my page so I thought I’d let you know that sadly, Basil aka the big dog was put to sleep last month. He had a few health issues that we were managing but then we discovered a tumour in his throat.

I took him home and gave him one last great day. Chocolate brownies, steak and smash and a naughty Macdonalds.

I’m struggling without him but I was the right call at the right time.

Just gave the big fella a good brush using Dr.Doggyuk spray & go fur protector. Started by evenly spraying him, then gave him a good brush. He smells lovely and he’s all shiny. These are all great products, I highly recommended them.

Hello followers!!! I know it looks like this page isn’t used anymore but that’s not the case. I have a private group with my dogs humans on it. That’s the only place you’ll see Emma’s ark dogs on, just for security purposes.

Good news is that I will be taking on new dogs this year as long as they meet certain requirements. For example all dogs much be neutered male and female unless they are too young but that can be discussed individually.

Hope 2023 is kind to you all and brings you good health. I look forward to meeting new humans and dogs this year.

This is me and my basil, he’s 11 years young this year. 🐾❤️🐾

Good morning all. Last month I started using some products from Dr.Doggyuk, well life got a little busy but I’m going to get back to it now.

So next product review is the “bedding & laundry protector” you’re going to love this. I actually used it twice once on its own and the other time with some scent boosters.

The product is great, you need such a small amount and the bed came out without any dog smell, which is amazing when I used such a little amount. Less packaging and fewer chemicals. Will definitely appeal to those wanting to do a little extra for the environment.

10/10 for this one! Dr.Doggyuk

So my little mate Mr H had a very special date today. He was the guest of honour at his humans wedding. We nipped over so he could get in on a photo (these will follow).

Before we went we made him look and smell all handsome. We used Dr Doggy’s spray & go fur protector. The smell is lovely (baby powder) and his coat was super shiny. Definitely recommend this product. You don’t even need that much. Take a look for yourselves ❤️🐾🐶 Dr.Doggyuk

I’m going to be trying them all over the next week or so and I’ll keep you updated.

I’ve been thinking about posting this for a while and I figured sod it, let’s get my point across!

As dog walkers we walk a lot of dogs, 1 can walk up to 6 dogs on my insurance and I do this every day. We don’t earn loads of money, we drive around a lot and rinse fuel like there’s no tomorrow. We do it for the love of dogs, we struggle to say “no” to people because we want the best for the dogs we’ve got to know and come to love.

When we walk 6 dogs we are not doing anything wrong. If you have an issue with it you are well within your rights to walk the other way as we try to do if we can. You do not need to pass judgment or make snide comments. If you get upset by being told to “f**k off” then there’s another reason to just mind your own business. If my dogs are leaving you and yours alone then leave us alone. We are not doing anything wrong!!

Think before you call the dog warden! Think about the actual issues they need to deal with. Dog neglect, dog attacks on people and other dogs, unlicensed breeding with bi***es bred time and time again. Look and the recent case where a child was killed by a dog that had been in its home for a week. Dogs being sold on irresponsibly and not given time to settle and decompress. All things our local dog wardens need to get involved with. Animal welfare issues. Think before you waste their time and mine. Also if you must call at least try and tell the truth, don’t make up things that didn’t happen to justify your call.

Last month a dear friend of mine had to look for a new dog Walker to help her out. Her one could not take the amount of grief he was getting purely due to the amount of dogs he was waking! He’s stopped doing a job he loved because people couldn’t keep their opinions to themselves. Just stop.

The harder it becomes to find a decent dog Walker the more dogs are going to be left with welfare issues. Live and let live, you’ve heard the news right? You know what terrible things are happening in the world right?

I’m sure that those that pass judgment and make these ridiculous calls are a minority and don’t need a dog Walker and has never needed one. Well situations change. Finances change. Able bodied people change. Friends and family that help can change. If any of these changes happen to you let’s hope there’s still some decent dog walkers out there to help and support you. Every morning I go and see an elderly man and his dog to check on them and give the dog insulin, Poo pick the garden, clean bowls, make coffee and just help out. No money exchanges hands for this, I do it because no one else does and they are struggling.

So before you waste the dog wardens time “with there’s too many dogs” when there’s no more than 6 per person. Please think about the real issues of welfare that they need to deal with. Is your call necessary, is it factual and were you kind??

Hello everyone

Just wanted to let you all know that I will no longer be taking on dogs that have not been neutered. Males or females!

I have many reasons for this, here are a few of them:

Boarding: I don’t want intact dogs in my house, the males tend to scent mark all over my house and females could come into season at any point they do not run like clockwork. You choose what goes on in your house and I do the same in mine. I want all the dogs I walk to be potential boarders to maximise my income.

Males:
* intact males tend to get bullied by other males in the pack, in time this can result in aggression.
* their hearing is never at it’s best when all they want to do is find a mate.
* unwanted hu***ng.
* more appealing to dog thieves.
* more likely to run off after female scent not in the pack.
* more likely to start fights to assert dominance or pack leader status.

Females:
* their hormones attract unwanted attention, this can cause upset and friction in the pack.
* I can’t walk a female that’s in season this means that I lose income that I can’t fill for those 4-6 weeks.
* if the worst happens and your dog falls into the wrong hands you’ve got a better chance getting your spayed female back. If the low life can breed from your bitch and make money you are not getting it back until she stops making them money! Years down the line, that’s if you ever get her back! I couldn’t cope with that, it would be the end of Emma’s ark.

Not to mention getting your dog neutered can lessen the risk of certain cancers later in life.

These are all my opinion and things I’ve seen in my 5 years of dog walking and boarding.

I can hear you all saying “not my dog” you walking your dog with one or two others and briefly bumping into other dogs can’t be compared to walking in a pack.

It’s not personal guys and it isn’t up for debate, this is how I’m choosing to run my business. Of course I’m not talking about young dogs.

🌱 SPRING has most definitely sprung and we've started to have fledglings (baby birds with feathers) dropped off to us here at Vetsmiths 🐦

It's quite common in spring and summer to find young birds sitting on the ground or hopping about without any sign of the parents. This is perfectly normal. These baby birds are doing exactly what nature intended - they leave the nest for a short time on purpose before flying.

Often the parents are looking for food, or watching from a safe distance. They'll always come back and feed their fledgling, so although it may be tempting to move them, unless they are at harm from traffic or cats, it's best to leave them.

The less interference the better ‼️

If you are concerned for their safety, then we would advise moving them to a safe place in the hedgerows or bushes. It's probably a good idea to keep the cat in for the rest of the day too if you have one!

Any interference should be kept to an absolute minimum. However, if there are noticeable signs of harm or wounds, then that's when we would intervene.

The exception to this is for nestlings - baby birds that are un-feathered or covered in down - as they can sometimes fall out of the nest. Only put them back in the nest if you are 100% sure where they came from and they appear strong.

If not, it's possible they were ejected from the nest by the parents. Rehabilitation would be necessary in this case - it's survival of the fittest!

Call us in the first instance if you find a baby bird and we can advise the best course of action - 01202 119988 ☎️
