Giving Henry his own post for this as it was an impressive one! His trail layer shook hands with Reece before leaving the area. Henry was asked to sniff Reece's handshake hand (and ignore the treat pouch) and to find his trail layer from just that. A combination of a scent transfer, a novel article and a contaminated article!

Including my first time meeting the lovely Team Deedee, who didn't skip a beat trailing with a new instructor at a new location! And the very first trails for Buzz's little sister Dizzy 😍

All the teams had a crack at gate indications (and safe gate handling!) and did fantastically. Team Henry had some very interesting scent transfers (a handshake and a vehicle) and nailed both ✨

We also filled a gap with Astrid (worked by Reece) - thank you to everyone for trail laying for the little-but-loud shepherd, and I am very pleased with how polite she was at the end of each trail!

Who knows what day it is this week but it was a good day for mantrailing! Teams Bertie, Gus, Koba, Cwtch, Kestrel, Quinn, Indie and Henry joined for a spot of coastal trailing. An unusually still day for the location, which made for very good trailing conditions!

After a long ol' year of surgery and rehab for Darwin, he's finally able to trail again πŸ₯³ We eased him in gently with a 1000m trail a few days ago! The video is up on our YouTube - it's a long one but an excellent view of the trail layer vs dog perspective!

A very festive mantrailing day! Teams Arty, Houdini, Kestrel, Indie, Marley, Lionel, Cwtch, Buzz and Ginny joined to help find Santa when he lost his hat* and to clear up after the trailers carelessly discarded their party cups*

Some super novel article work from all the dogs - for many it was their first experience with an unusual article and they all nailed it.

Have a very merry Christmas and we'll be back for some betwixtmas trailing soon!

*All novel articles were retrieved, no litterbugs here!

Very glad to finally be back out with the trailers after a holiday and a storm break! Today we had Teams Quinn, Ralph, Lionel and Baxter for a spot of mixed urban trailing. Quinn and Baxter tackled an interesting aged trail (see Quinn's trail map with wind marked!), Lionel, Baxter and Quinn all nailed a split trail, and Ralph aced some more difficult starts for the first time!

Very proud of them all!

We had the most magical week away in south Wales. It was the most dog friendly place we've ever been to - both the area and the property we stayed at. The dogs were (almost πŸ˜‰) perfect for the whole 7 days. We had huge sandy beaches completely to ourselves almost every day, quiet country walks from our doorstep, a secure private field, a log fire and even a bit of sunshine once Storm Bert had passed through. Photographing all three dogs together went about as well as usual (especially Mendel πŸ˜…)

Feeling refreshed and just about ready to return to work now!

This morning's trailers - Teams Arty, Meme and Cwtch πŸ₯° We had a lovely morning soaking up the autumn colours, working on some junction handling with the super-fast Arty, open space handling with Cwtch, and rounding up with Meme working what I'll call "Space-Invaders style" walking trail layers πŸ˜‚

It was longer trails day up at Butser Hill today! I am incredibly proud of each team today!

Team Lionel - a record 250m trail with super focus despite plentiful dog/ bunny scent distractions
Team Kestrel - a beautiful, methodical 250m, crystal-clear trail
Team Bertie - a mix of shorter trails to lift his spirits after a tough week with fireworks, all cleanly executed with a fabulous guest trail layer to add an extra motivation factor
Team Henry - returning after a break from training to knock out a record 500m, 40 minute aged trail, with incredible accuracy
Team Indie - the icing on today's cake with a 730m trail taking us right across the hilltop, working past a decoy and showing us some fascinating scent sampling behaviours at the radio tower

Mantrailing: Motivation and Confidence 🀩

This afternoon we did a slightly more nerdy session looking at what motivates a mantrailing team and why we should care. Dogs (and humans) are individuals and what might work for one team may not work for another. Today was all about high reward activities - finding the exercises that give a team an endorphin high. For my sins, there were graphs made πŸ™ˆ

Teams Kestrel, Baxter, Cherry, Henry and Indie 🧑

Mantrailing morning teams!

This morning, novice teams Fletcher, Mabel and Dusty made huge strides in their foundations. All three dogs moved onto harder start variations, we talked about which dogs lean towards air scenting vs ground scenting, and had an all round great time.

Not-novice team Cwtch knocked out a pretty flawless 400m, 45 minute aged, "soft blind" trail alongside some shorter ones. Big thank you to Nicola for sitting in the woods for so long!

A bit of Halloween fun for this morning's trailers! πŸŽƒπŸ§Ή Teams Kestrel, Daisy, Baxter, Cwtch and Indie tackled some seasonal novel articles - carved pumpkins (of varying quality...) and a contaminated broomstick (which only flew off of its own accord the one time πŸ˜…)

It's always fun making sure these activities are suitable for all abilities - some have their pumpkins presented in the familiar zip-lock bag to ease the transition, and others can approach a pumpkin in the wild and know just what to do.

Saturday trailing at Staunton Country Park! A very busy environment to be working in for many of the dogs today and they did so well. Teams Cwtch, Millie, Bertie and Quin this morning, working with the unusual wind directions on the terrace area and a brilliant scent discrimination exercise at the end! And Teams Cherry, Lionel and Baxter this afternoon. Baxter has developed a (clever) habit of predicting where the trail layer is likely to be hidden, so we worked on more novel presentation of trail layers to great effect.

Always a very interesting place to trail, especially around the terrace area where the scent does very novel things! Special mention to Bertie for the best recovery from noise aversion we've seen so far - returning to trailing after a refusal and completing his best scent discrimination exercise to date!
