📢 Why Are So Many Dogs Going Missing? 🐾

🐩 Lately, there’s been a noticeable increase in missing dogs, and it’s heartbreaking to see so many families searching for their beloved pets. Here’s why this might be happening and how we can help prevent it:

1️⃣ Escaping from Unsecured Areas: Dogs are curious by nature and can slip out of open gates, damaged fences, or even dig their way out of back gardens.

2️⃣ Loud Noises or Scary Events: Thunderstorms, fireworks, or unexpected loud sounds can spook dogs, causing them to run away in fear.

3️⃣ Accidental Loss: Walks without a secure lead or a correctly fitted collar/harness that they can’t slip. Quick escapes through open doors can happen in the blink of an eye.

4️⃣ Flight Risk: Dogs being let off lead that have been newly rescued or are timid/nervous, who will take flight when worried or scared.

5️⃣ Theft Risks: Sadly, some dogs are targeted due to their breed or appearance.

🆘 How You Can Help Protect Your Dog:
🔖 Collar and ID Tag: An ID tag with your contact information is the quickest way for someone to reunite you with your dog if they find them. It’s also the law for your dog to wear one.

📛 Microchip: Collars can fall off, but a microchip is a permanent way to identify your dog. Just make sure your contact info is up to date.

🚪 Secure Your Home and garden: Regularly check for weak spots in fences or gates.

🐕 Supervise Walks and Outdoor Time: Always keep your dog on a lead if they are potentially a flight risk and monitor them when outside.

💡 A simple ID tag can make the difference between your dog finding their way home in hours versus weeks—or never. Do your part to keep your dog safe and sound!

🚫TOXIC CHRISTMAS FOODS FOR DOGS 🚫

🍫 CHOCOLATE 🍫
The most common clinical signs of ingesting chocolate are vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, panting or restlessness, excessive urination, and racing heart rate. In severe cases, symptoms can include muscle tremors, seizures, and heart failure.

🦴 COOKED BONES 🦴
Be wary of feeding them cooked turkey, goose and chicken bones as they can easily splinter, causing an obstruction and possibly even piercing your dog’s tummy

🥧 CHRISTMAS CAKE, MINCE PIES & CHRISTMAS PUDDING 🥧
All contain dried fruits such as raisins, currants or sultanas which are toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure.

🌰 MACADAMIA NUTS 🌰
Even a small amount ingested can lead to vomiting, hyperthermia and muscle weakness

🧀 BLUE CHEESE 🧀 can cause vomiting, high temperatures, diarrhoea and even seizures.

🧄🧅 ONIONS, LEEKS, GARLIC, CHIVES & SHALLOTS 🧅🧄
Can cause anaemia, look out for signs of lethargy, weakness, pale gums, fainting, reddish urine and decreased appetite.

🍾 ALCOHOL 🍾
Can cause lethargy, respiratory depression, and dangerously low body temperature in dogs.

REMEMBER your Christmas dinner involves a large amount of dangerous foods for your dog, either through being toxic, too salty or too fatty, so please be safe when trying to include your dog on Christmas Day.

If you think your dog may have eaten something that they shouldn’t or they have symptoms including sickness and diarrhoea, speak to your vet straight away.
