With the promise of warmer weather, many of us are now thinking of fun days at the beach with our dogs (well, the ones that allow dogs!) As well as a fun place for humans, it can be a fun place for dogs but, know the dangers of Saltwater Poisoning in Dogs. When a dog is thirsty, many will drink pretty much anything and, seawater can look just as inviting.
Drinking too much sea water can make a dog seriously ill, although the odd small sip here and there shouldn't cause harm.
There is a huge amount of salt in sea water and, if a dog drinks too much, they can very quickly become dehydrated when there is a disruption to the fluid levels in the body.
Symptoms:
➡ Vomiting
➡ Diarrhoea
➡ Lethargy
➡ Confusion
➡ Odd behaviour
➡ Muscle spasms
➡ Extreme thirst
➡ Excessive weeing
➡ Loss of appetite
➡ Seizures
If you notice any of the above symptoms, take your dog to a vet immdiately.
Try offering water little and often on route to help rehydrate.
How to prevent Saltwater Poisoning
✅ Take plenty of fresh water with you, enough to last your whole visit
✅ Remember to take a bowl or something your dog can drink from
✅ Allow your dog plenty of breaks from play, both in and out of the sea
✅ Try offering water to your dog on the breaks but, make sure there is plenty of fresh drinking water available at all times that they can help themselves to
✅ Offer plenty of shade
