I have a particular interest in the mental wellbeing of horses, an area which is often overlooked. I believe that massage can provide the opportunity for the release of stress and trauma, often held within the body.
As my clients know, I am fascinated by the Hyoid bones and how a restriction in this area can affect the entire horse.
The vagal nerves also pass through the Hyoid. These nerves are known to play an important role in self regulation and anxiety. I find many horses are highly responsive to work in this area.

He would also be a great horse to do some Somatic work with as he is notably 'mindful' when he returns his hoof to the ground. Working this way can return the body to a state of genuine relaxation when at rest.

I really enjoyed working with this gorgeous boy whilst down in Somerset for a few days.
Woody was holding tension in his neck and shoulders and seemed delighted with his surprise massage.
A great example of how Kinesiology tape can lift the superficial tissue via the hair.
A few months ago I completed a CPD with the fascinating osteopath Sarina Farina.
I learnt several techniques for releasing the muscles around the Hyoid bones.
The Hyoid apparatus, being relatively mobile, is easily influenced by muscle restrictions.
The Hyoid has connections throughout the body and can even impact the action of the hindquarters.
It's close association with the Thyroid, TMJ and Poll also highlight it's importance.
In addition, it's proximity to the Vagal nerves, currently much talked about in human mental health, indicate the affect it can have on the anxious horse.
I am excited about researching more into the Hyoid and am very much enjoying seeing how well my clients are responding to treatment in this area.

A couple of weeks ago I attended my second of two training days with the wonderful Marcia Wakeman (Classical Dressage & In-Hand Training).
As my clients know, I strongly believe in the advantages of lateral in-hand training.
It can really help the horse to strengthen it's core, whilst improving balance and straightness without the interference of a rider.
I had a lovely day on Monday working with these two stunning greys, Mr P and Player.
Both horses are sensitive and respond very well to the gentle approach of Myofascial Release.
Initially shy of me, they both now fully embrace their treatments and allow themselves to release any tension they are holding.
I hope everyone enjoyed their Sunday evening as much as Bert was enjoying his massage !
I recently attended a fascinating CPD in Kinesiology taping.
The use of this tape can help with inflammation, pain, poor lymph/blood flow, fascial dysfunction and proprioception.
I have found it very helpful for injuries of my own and am very much looking forward to using it in my practice.
I really love regularly working with this gorgeous and talented boy, Oscar.
He was initially shy and nervous around me but over time I feel we have developed a close bond.
He seems to love his massages and is very responsive, sometimes with dramatic releases !
