⚠️Top Tips for walking your dog whilst dog thefts are happening regularly....⚠️
With all the recent posts of dog thefts in and around the area, I thought I would throw together some top tips you can follow to reassure yourself your doing all you can to prevent it happening to you.
❗️Mobile Phones❗️
Always take your mobile phone out with you on walks. You can use this to alert people you are worried or being followed. You can use this to take photos of suspicious activity (if it’s safe to do so). If you have an iPhone, you can also use the ‘Find my iPhone’ setting which will alert your chosen contacts of your whereabouts.
❗️Wear bright clothing ❗️
Wearing a fluorescent jacket or hi-vis will make you more visible and stand out. This will automatically deter people from approaching you for all the wrong reasons.
❗️Carry an alarm ❗️
A personal alarm or loud alarm device is a great way to alert others your in distress and need help. This can also in turn attract unwanted attention to those who are there for the wrong reasons.
❗️Dye Spray ❗️
You can now purchase a legal spray called FARB Criminal defence spray, which can dye the person you spray it on. This can be an amazing way to identify someone especially as it dyes for a few days and could make them change their minds on their actions!
❗️Body Cameras ❗️
You can purchase a small body camera to wear in a harness around you to record your walking time. This may help to put someone off of approaching you.
❗️Walk in open spaces ❗️
Try and stick to places that are open so you can see who is approaching. An open field is a great space as you can walk away from someone who is approaching you. If the worst does happen, you also have a chance of following whilst phoning for help, or calling your dogs back and them breaking away to run back too you.
❗️Avoid road walks ❗️
As much as we would like to avoid the mud at the moment, the roadside is where a lot of dog thefts are happening. A vehicle will drive up next to you, take the dog, and drive away quickly. If your in an open space, as above, they don’t have a quick get away. If you have to do a road walk, try sticking to peak walking times such as morning lunch or early evening. This means you will be around other people to call for help if you need it.
❗️Walk in twos ❗️
Where you can, always walk with other people. Two of you fighting against these people will give you a better chance to get away and report something if need be. Walking in pairs will normally be off putting too.
❗️Leads ❗️
If your in a new space, somewhere you aren’t familiar with, or just have an uneasy feeling, keep your dog on a lead. This will reduce the risk of your dogs running upto anyone who is offering treats and may try to take your dog.
❗️Timings ❗️
Walk your dogs at different timings. Change your routines and don’t walk in the same places every time. Normally dog thieves will watch you for your routines before they strike, so changing it up will throw them off track and deter them.
❗️Someone showing interest ❗️
If you have someone asking you a silly amount of questions about your dogs, then make up the answers or just walk away. Don’t ever tell a stranger personal details like your address or if your dog has been spayed/neutered. These can be big factors in weather they choose your dog for breeding or not.
❗️Dog walkers ❗️
If you use a dog walker, ask them not to park outside your house. If they have a sign written van especially, this can be worrying as this can alert people to your absence from the property. If they park down the road slightly and look to see no one is watching, this will reduce risks of anything happening whilst your out.
❗️Cameras ❗️
Security cameras, ring door bells and alarms are also great deterrents for thieves. Having these won’t stop them, but it will provide evidence and peace of mind if you can check in with your pups every so often.
❗️Don’t leave your dog alone outside ❗️
Don’t leave your dog alone in the car, tied up outside a shop or even in the garden alone. These are perfect opportunities for people to steal your dogs whilst your take your eyes off of them. If you need to go to the shop, leave your pups at home!
❗️Be aware ❗️
Always be aware of your surroundings and people around you. Never wear headphones or be looking down at your phone whilst your dog is off lead. Head phones will prevent you from hearing someone approaching, as will being stuck in your phone!
❗️Scan the area ❗️
As you arrive at your walking destination, have a look around for any shifty characters. You can normally tell a dog walker, from a walker. If you see someone who is looking a lot, hanging around the cars, or just isn’t dressed for a walk, trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation. Make a note of the date, time, area and generally description of the person and report to the non emergency line.
Remember to stay safe, try not to panic and enjoy your walks. Your dogs will pick up if your anxious so try to stay calm. If your worried whilst out, go home. Or call someone to come and meet you. I’m always here if you need me.
This has been happening for a few years, but with Facebook and social media it’s becoming a lot more apparent to us now. But remember, when your dogs are in my care I will do everything in my power to keep them safe. If you have any concerns, please message me.
