🌸 May we take a moment to reflect on May! 🌸

We’ve loved sharing with you all of our posts this month- from introductions to top tips and various bits in between - we feel proud of what nurses can do and lucky to work with some of the very best!

One last shout out and THANK YOU (in May 2024 at least!) to all the wonderfully talented, kind and committed nurses, student nurses, VCA’s, ACA’s, PCA’s and auxiliaries who we’re fortunate enough to work with - you’re all excellent and it’s been a privilege celebrating you all this month!

When you realise your photo is being taken! 😳😍😅

The adorable 7 month old Jack Russell, Teddy from St Kitts Veterinary Group suffered a distal femoral fracture earlier this week which our brilliant Registrar, Dan, stepped in to help repair using a cross pinning technique as seen here in his post-op radiographs. Teddy was a brave little chap for his treatment and we’re sure his big personality will see him through his recovery journey ❤️‍🩹 Now for the tricky bit - keeping him calm from doing all the things mischievous puppies do 🐶 but we know he and his family are in excellent hands with the team who will guide them on the road to a happy and healthy summer ahead 💙

It’s a sunny today - at last!☀️

Introducing one of our other regular bank nurses, Taly, seen here sharing all important patients snuggles! Taly’s been a brilliant help over the past couple of years, stepping in to increase our nursing numbers when our practices are in need of that extra pair of hands 🙌🏼

We asked Taly what she enjoys most about helping the PVS team … here’s her answer… “I love being able to bring great veterinary care to pets in their own familiar practice!” 💙

Thank you Taly for supporting our team, we really are very grateful, as are our practices and their patients! If you see Taly out and about, pop over and say hello 👋🏼

🌟🌟🌟Overwhelmed and Exceptionally Grateful🌟🌟🌟 Just two phrases which sum up our feelings after the recent generosity and kindness of those of you who came forward wishing to donate some of your practice consumables that were no longer required by you!

Thank you SO much to everybody who donated to the Worldwide Veterinary Service - WVS - our surgeon, Edric, is currently out in Malawi helping the team to care for numerous animals who may have otherwise gone without treatment 💙

Your donations have meant that these animals can be treated with brilliant resources that we are exceptionally lucky to have on hand each day in our workplaces. When we put a call out for any ‘past their best’ items, Edric wondered how on earth he was going to fit everything in his suitcase ➡️ swipe to see his haul!!! (So we suggested he went to The Range to get some vacuum bags!!) 💼

With a little help from his bag packing team, Crumble and Kili 🐶🐶, Edric managed to increase his baggage allowance to accommodate all of the wonderful donations so off to Malawi they went! ✈️

We really were overwhelmed with response, from medications to bandages, instruments to crocs and everything in between, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, the animals and their people who are working so hard to deliver the very best care are truly exceptionally grateful 🙏🏼

With special thanks to those we can tag here and everyone else who we can’t but is reading, your kindness has gone a really long way, in more ways than one 💙🌍

Continuing we want to highlight how important it is to feel organised! ✍🏼

With some of our more complex and lengthy procedures, you might find that you’re reaching for additional meds, more eye l**e or that spare sock you grabbed before you started, so why not pop everything in to a little basket or dish to take with you from prep, to theatre, to x-ray, then wards?

We find this is super simple, yet effective action that could save you loads of time rummaging around for things you’ve misplaced along the way! 🧺 💉🖊️ Combine this with our wipe-clean Surgical Checklist and you’ll be the champion of organisation! 💪🏼

We love a BEFORE and AFTER shot 📸

Sharing our thanks to the lovely team at Small World Vet Centre who have done a wonderful job of monitoring the handsome Juno in his recovery journey. Juno presented for resection of a large mass on the lateral aspect of his stifle which was consistent with a mast cell tumour. Thorough staging had been performed prior to surgery, including abdominal ultrasound, splenic and liver biopsies and sentinel lymph node mapping which showed no signs of metastasis.

Soft tissue surgeon, Sam, proceeded to excise the mass, reconstructing with an inguinal fold subdermal plexus flap. These photos show the progress of wound healing, which Juno’s family were very hot on monitoring by peeling back his ‘super-man suit’ regularly 🦾

Attending vet Agata, kindly shared with us last week that “the fabulous, wonderful, handsomest Juno is all recovered and the flap is all covered by new hair growth. His mum is ever so pleased and he is back to being a menace. I cannot thank Sam enough for all of her wisdom, time and teaching.”

What lovely feedback to receive - thank you 💙

Happy Monday everyone 💙

In line with our theme of May, we wanted to take the chance to introduce to you some of our fantastic bank nurses who kindly give up their spare time to assist our surgeons, whether that be from an anaesthetic or scrubbed assistant point of view!

So this week, we give a shout out to RVN, Sam! 🌸

Sam will be a familiar face to many as she’s been helping PVS for several years now, swooping in often at the last minute to ensure we can provide the nursing support that you and your patients need! We thank you Sam for all of your efforts to deliver excellent care to our practices and all of the pets! 🐶🐱

A word from Sam herself- “I enjoy being part of an amazing team of professionals who always go above and beyond to help every patient and their owners.” 🩵

Carrying on this May, we say a massive thank you to all the awesome nurses who kindly go above and beyond when our surgeon’s kit needs turning around between surgeries, like Marie here at Vets4Pets Bracknell , coming to Nicci’s rescue! 🩷

Autoclaving is something our vets do themselves at home prior to coming to your practice, so when a kind nurse offers to do a little bit for them, it’s a ‘yes please and thank you very much’ all in one!!

Continuing our promise to recognise throughout , today we give a BIG shout out to all the brilliant nurses who are on hand to scrub in for our surgeons 🩷

Featuring the lovely Lizzie at Mulberry House Vets who last week scrubbed with surgeon, Chris, for a tarsal fracture repair on a little cat 🐱 Delicate and steady hands were required for this one, which Lizzie excelled at, and she loved doing it too! 💪🏼 Thanks Lizzie! 🙏🏼

If you’re a nurse and you’d like to scrub in to your practices PVS surgery, don’t be afraid to ask, it’s brilliant experience for you, and a brilliant help for us!

🌸 🍀🥂MAY marks the start of 🌸🍀🥂

So throughout the month, we’re going to share with you all sorts of nurse related bits and pieces.. whether that be what our nurses get up to, what their top tips are or shout outs to all the awesome nurses who our team are lucky enough to work with! 🩷

We think it’s a well-known fact that nurses are the glue to a practice, and these two are no exception 🤗Pictured here are our team RVN’s, Bev (right) and Lauren (left). They’re faces you may recognise from being out in practice; assisting our surgeons with anaesthetics and scrubbing in, or they are the names you’ll recognise from our busy email or phone service that you use when sending a patient enquiry 👩🏻‍⚕️👩🏼‍⚕️ It was meant to be when last week they crossed paths - knowing was just around the corner, we couldn’t resist a quick nurse-team snap! 📸

Wishing all the wonderful nurses out there a very happy May! This months all about you 🫵🏼

🙋🏻‍♂️ Calling all unwanted or ‘past their best’ consumables and medicines!

Surgeon Edric, is off to Malawi very soon to assist the wonderful team at Worldwide Veterinary Service - WVS with another outreach project- something that’s very close to his heart! 🌎This dedicated charity rely hugely on the generous donations made by YOU and your practice teams, not only with volunteer help but also the consumables used to treat the animals in need.

If you feel like your practice may have some stock that could go towards this worthy cause, please drop us a message or email us at [email protected] and we’ll be able to confirm if Edric can take it on his travels.

Thank you in advance for your consideration 💙

It’s a new week which means…. 🥁

Bruno the Bulldog visited The Guildford Vet this week to see soft tissue surgeon, Sam, for BOAS surgery.

This boy had the sweetest nature and the wiggliest little tail we think we’ve seen all week 💙… but sadly, Bruno has been struggling with his breathing more and more as he’s grown in to adulthood, which has seen his tolerance for exercise decrease. His family made the decision to go ahead with surgical intervention, with the support of ‘s brilliant team.

His visit entailed:

👩🏻‍💼Comprehensive consultation to discuss history, treatment options and the risks and possible complications involved.

🩺 Thorough clinical examination which revealed severely stenotic nares, bilateral nasal discharge and stertorous noise on auscultation of his thorax and larynx.

📝 General Anaesthetic to assess upper airway revealing a markedly elongated soft palate and everted laryngeal saccules.

🩻 Radiographs to assess lower airway and skull anatomy

🧰Surgery by means of Staphylectomy, laryngeal sacculectomy, alavestibuloplasty and naroplasty.

👩🏻‍⚕️Continuous nursing care during and post recovery from anaesthetic, with a veterinary surgeon very nearby should one be required.

💨 Intubation equipment was also kept very close by throughout Bruno’s full visit in the event of an emergency.

… Sam was pleased with how Bruno’s procedures went and reported back to his family all of the necessary precautions to take with him in his recovery; including using a harness rather than a collar, limiting his activity, feeding small amounts of food whilst monitoring him and keeping his environmental temperature ambient.

We hope that Bruno will recover well and that he’ll find exercise a little easier as he goes in to the warmer months. ☀️

Utah, the beautiful cocker spaniel, visited Pet People Vets last week to see Nicci for a CCWO to address her left cruciate ligament rupture, but before she got to prep, she got scooped up by RVN Bev who couldn’t resist a cuddle 🥰

We think you’ll all agree that she has quite simply got thee greatest eye lashes one could wish for .. we wonder what her secret is! 💙

Featuring on our this week is soft tissue Surgeon, Ana! Ana enjoys a wide variety of soft tissue surgeries, including laparoscopy which many of our practices will know her very well for! In this area, she’s built up a service on our team whereby we can provide all the necessary equipment to deliver a clinic-like arrangement for up to 3 patients in 1 day which has been a huge success- thank you Ana 🙏🏼 Aside from laparoscopic surgeries, Ana holds a wealth of experience in other soft tissue cases; something that she also provides to a busy London hopsital outside of her PVS working days.

Favourite surgery - Large mass removals and reconstruction 🧰

Favourite biscuit - choc chips cookies🍪

Pets - Seruga, the almighty one eyed cat🐈‍⬛

Sweet sisters, Nala and Coco 🐕‍🦺🐕‍🦺

Two of Hook Veterinary Centre’s recent lap spay patients. Both as good as gold to be looked after by Ana Murta and the team at Hook 🖤🖤 Using a two-port approach, these two lovely girls were spayed by a ovariectomy technique, meaning just their ovaries were removed, as opposed to a ovariohysterectomy which involves removal of the uterus too.

Advantages of laparoscopic spays include:

✅ smaller ‘key-hole’ wounds
✅ no internal sutures- instead we use a sealing device
✅ reduced tissue handling so reduced discomfort
✅ more efficient return to normal activity due to the above points
✅ camera- assisted inspection of other organs

Warmer months are upon us (nearly.. hopefully.. maybe at some point this year! 🤞🏼)

Which brings us to ask, have you had any chats with your clients regarding their Brachycephalic pets recently? 🤔

BOAS surgical intervention is something that we support doing in the cooler months of the year if it is indicated, to reduce environmental factors that could influence a patients recovery; such as temperature and humidity of their home environment 🏡

These photos demonstrate a before and after ‘nares resection’ - just one of a few ways in which our surgeons can aid a Brachycephalic breed if they are struggling with the respiration. To find out how we could assist you and your clients, please drop us a message or head to our website where we’ve got some really informative resources …

Poppy the adorable Labrador puppy came to see surgeon Edric at Goddard Vet Groups Stone Lion hospital last week to investigate a ‘clicking’ sound in one of her hind limbs. A series of X-rays were obtained to assist Edric with her diagnosis and we couldn’t resist snapping a couple of shots as she was so rewarding to position, aren’t puppies just the best in so many ways!? 🐕‍🦺🥰

As it was one of Poppy’s first trips to the vets, she was escorted by her comforting elephant who sat by her side every step of the way 🐘 She was an excellent patient, one her pawrents should be very proud of 💙

Edric’s recommended a re-check in a months time so we can keep an eye on Poppy’s progress. In the meantime, her family will maintain controlled activity and establish a good puppy diet perfect for her growing journey. We’re sure she’s going to be an all round, bravest little star🌟

Meet Mimi, the sweetest Golden Retriever who last week visited Windlesham Village Vets due to a ruptured cruciate ligament in her left hind which saw her having a TPLO by surgeon, Ivan 🦮💛

At 14 years young, Mimi qualified as one of our more elderly patients, so Ivan and RVN Lauren, took a few extra actions to ensure her anaesthetic was tailored to her specific needs; including pre anaesthetic blood analysis, intravenous fluid therapy started as soon as possible after admission, a reduced dose pre-medication and plenty of active warming aids throughout her stay. 🩺

These actions are just a few of the steps we put in place for our patients to make sure their hospital visit is as smooth and comfortable as possible. To aid Mimi at home during her recovery, a comfortable and supportive bed such as an orthopaedic mattress will be employed, and a sling support under her tummy for when she’s getting up and heading out on her toilet strolls. We know that Mimi’s strong spirit and non-stop tail wags will see her enjoying the spring sunshine ☀️ in no time. Get well soon lovely girl 🏡💕
