Love my new van cages, part 1 complete. In a few months it will go back for another 4 cages and some other bits. Love the colour. Extra comfort and security for the dogs as all cages have locks, plus van is insulated now, so hopefully will help dogs keep cooler in summer and warmer in the winter.

Worst part of the job, in last 12 months I have had to say goodnight to 5 dogs going over rainbow bridge.

This one really took me off guard, Trojan, the biggest soppy idiotic dog. Trojan thought he was casanova, and didn't understand why not all dogs loved him. He just wanted to be everyone's friend. I remember when I first met him and this 60kg dog was trying to climb on me and sit on my lap. My van will be a lot quieter without him howling his excitement at arriving to a walk. Run free Troj, run free, and behave, try not to be too much of a pest in doggy heaven ❤️😪 gone too young and too soon.

I also regularly talk to the dogs and ask for their opinions.

I got some devastating new the other day, Bubbles (aka puddles, bubbalicious, bub) who I have been walking for just over 5 years has sadly gone over rainbow Bridge. She was such a character. A white fluffy dog that ambition in life was to see how black and disgusting she could get. She came on a couple of camping trips with me, got on with everyone and best selfie dog. I will miss you loads bubbles, hope you are running free in lots of disgusting puddles. 💔😭

I have shared this before, but seen it again recently and do true. Author unknown. I have had a couple of dogs move away, a few pass away, and it breaks my heart each time. I love all my dogs that I walk, they are an extended doggy family to me.

1. It's a lifestyle, not just a job. If you're in it for the money you've made a big mistake because a) you're never going to be rich, end of story; and b) you won't survive your first winter if that's your only motivation. We see these people come and go from time to time.

2. We talk to each other more than you might think. About the best walking boots, what clothing we are wearing for today's weather, our financial struggles, the traffic, dodgy men in the woods, fallen trees, etc. It's a lonely job but we have each other's backs from a distance.

3. We don't physically have eyes in the backs of our heads but we know so well the sound of every jingle of every ID tag, and every dog's individual footfall on the ground behind us, we may as well have.

4. We can't physically see round corners either, but we know so well each leading dog's body language in reaction to an oncoming person and/or dog that we may as well be able to.

5. We hear "Are they all yours?!" and "Wow you've got your hands full" at least twice a day, but we always smile and say "They keep me on my toes". Every. Single. Time.

6. It actually breaks our heart when a dog moves out of our area, and we thoroughly investigate our replacement for our own peace of mind, even if the client hasn't asked us to. Let's not even talk about when they pass away, we feel every bit of grief too, more than owners might think.

7. If you peel back a few layers of clothing (depending on the season) you will find bruises, scratches and scrapes covering the whole of our bodies. Don't bother asking where they came from, we have no idea.

8. If you see a dog walker looking vaguely presentable on a weekday, you should send help, something is not right.

9. We love our clients' dogs as we do our own and will sometimes lie awake at night worrying about their injuries, illnesses, and behaviour problems. We can't help it after spending so much time with them. It hurts us when clients don't appreciate this.

10. Despite the financial uncertainty, the harsh winters and the mud, the extreme summer temperatures, the blood, sweat and tears, it really is the best job in the world! 🥰

Turns out I have been rubbish with taking pictures recently. I love a group photo
1. sometimes if the dogs are getting a bit too hyper and silly, I call them back to sit and stay, sort of a calming down time out.
2. It is always good to engage with dogs in a walk, rather than letting them just run wild.
3. It is good to get them to focus on me rather than everything else, control is key when walking a group of dogs.
4. I just love it.

A day in the life of a reactive dog

Hello. I’m a reactive dog. People call me ‘reactive’ because I sometimes bark, growl and lunge towards other dogs, people, cats, cars – some of those things, or all of them.

‘Reactive’ is a label though and I would like you to understand what it’s really like to be ‘reactive’ and how I actually feel when I ‘react’.
If you are a ‘reactive’ dog, certain things, taken for granted by other dogs – such as a simple walk in the park or a trip to a dog show, become a bit more complicated. While I would love to be able to investigate all the fantastic smells in the park, or have a great time in a training class, scoffing off some yummy treats and exercising my brain cells, life for me is sadly full of anxiety and fear, and instead of enjoying these events, I am constantly on edge.

Why, you might want to ask? Can’t you just, like, get over it?

Nothing ever happens to you when you are out, why get yourself so worked up?

The problem is, ‘getting over it’ is not that simple. My anxiety and fear stem from many things – I might not have been socialised properly when young, or I might have had a bad experience. That means that certain things (other dogs, small children, load noises, people coming up to say hello) fill me with anxiety, fear or sometimes even panic. In many of those situations, if I could, I would probably run away, but many a time I can’t as I’m attached to a lead or cornered (like when another dog comes up to me and doesn’t want to leave me alone). But what sometimes works to make scary things go away is barking and growling at them – even bouncy dogs eventually get it. And while I might not look pretty or friendly when I growl and bark and lunge – hey! It works to get me out of a sticky situation and makes me feel safe again.

It’s not easy to feel scared every time I leave the house, and it’s not nice to see my owner tensing up or upset every time I feel I need to react. People shout abuse at me sometimes, ask my owner to muzzle me or even never walk me. But frankly, I don’t mean anyone any harm, I just want to be left alone. My owner works so hard to convince me that life isn’t all that scary after all – she feeds me yummy treats when a scary things approaches, she keeps me safe by helping me move out of the way rather than walk towards what is bound to upset me, she really, really tries, and I am slowly learning to trust things that used to freak me out loads.

But every now and then, just when I start thinking that maybe other dogs, people, cars etc. aren’t that scary after all, someone or something comes up a bit too close and my old fears come back – and all I can do is panic and scream (that is bark, growl and lunge) to make them go away.

So next time you see one of us – reactive dogs – out and about, please please – don’t judge. Don’t shout abuse at my owner who is trying all she can to make me feel safe. If you’re asked to call your dog away, please do, and don’t ask questions or claim your dog can do no harm as he’s friendly (to us, reactive dogs, that’s sometimes even worse!). Don’t let your children stroke us unless our owner says it’s fine. Just give us a bit of space so we can be on our way.

Thank you so much!

One of the best and worst parts of the job, you grow attached to lots of dogs. Sadly dolly crossed over to 🌈 Bridge today. She was such a character, loving and loyal companion, with lots of patience (needed when your little brother is ted the terrorist terrier). You will be missed beautiful girl. 😢
